Inner Strength
Okay guys... I know I will never be able to live up to Shakira or Lisa's FFs, but I can sure try. This story takes place after the trial is over, Captain Fraker was charged with attempted murder, and is presently in prison, serving his designated time. John Clark Jr. and Dr. Jennifer Devlin's relationship is blooming nicely, except for a couple awkward moments, on Jr.'s part, that were ultimately unexplained. Andy and Connie are great, their wedding was rescheduled for late October, and on the guest list was, among others, Lt. Tony Rodriguez. He was able to come because The Job was officially notified about Andy and Connie's relationship, and they were granted a pardon, after a thorough investigation, to re insure the fact that Connie and Andy getting married, and still working in the squad, would not interfere with their performances. Rita and John had honest to God straightened out this whole mess, over a few dinners and a couple long lunches. They agreed to remain friends, so long as neither of them forgot about what they had together, and how it was special. Rita wished John the best of luck, and did her best to ignore obvious signs of the Doc. and Jr.'s great times together. She was doing extremely well, as a matter of fact, and had withdrawn her request to transfer, a week after the boss and her returned to work, which was unbeknownst to Connie, let alone anyone else in the squad to begin with. Everyone was doing just fine, yes, things were almost returning to normal. Just about everything was finally cooling down... or so they thought.

By Hilary Duff
Gota find your inner strength
If you cant then just throw life away
Gotta learn to rely on you
Beauty, strength, and wisdom, too
You're beautiful inside and out
Lead a great life without a doubt
Don't need a man to make things fair

Listen Girl, gotta know it's true

4:30 PM Squad Room
Andy and John are out of the office at the moment, responding to a domestic disturbance, one of many, taking place in a fairly new set of apartments, on the corner of Avenue B and 2nd. An anonymous caller from earlier that day reported that the family in the apartment next to her has a 3 year old daughter who was getting beaten, and locked in the closet. When they went to check earlier, there was no answer, and the room was silent. The caller from earlier mentioned that she thought it could have been the T.V., but she wasn't quite sure. The two detectives decided that they would return later, if another argument occurred, and investigate more. Another argument had occurred.
Greg and Baldwin are working on an old case that was left unsolved. They reopened it because of some evidence that had recently surfaced, but weren't having much luck connecting the dots. Although the opportunity of giving up was large, and kept popping up all over the place, Greg, for some reason, wanted to crack this case, and, being the loyal partner that he was, Baldwin stuck by his side.
Connie and Rita were working a rape. The victim, Amelia Cappozza, was 22 years old. According to her friends, Amelia was a girl who prided herself on the fact that she was saving herself for that special someone, that person who she would spend the rest of her life with, her fiance Jeremiah. They were to be wed in 2 weeks, and were both madly in love. Amelia was a first year intern at the local Hospital, the very place where she met Jeremiah, a pediatrician there as well. Since the first time she had had sex was with a stranger, against her will, and she had hoped so much that Miah was her first, it was extremely hard to get through to her. Being the great detectives that Connie and Rita were, they managed to, but it was no easy task. The girls caught a break when they found out that a traffic cam. showed Amelia getting dragged into an alley, by a man who looked to be about in his mid twenties as well. After searching through registered sex offenders living within a 10 mile radius of where the crime happened, and coming up no hit, the two partners went knocking on some doors, looking for anyone who could possibly recognize who the man was. Nobody did, and as the two extremely worn out and discouraged detectives made their way back to their car, they spotted a prostitute getting into an expensive looking car, with another man. Rita quickly walked over, pulled the pros. out of the car, told the man to get lost, and as the car was screeching off, and the pros. was starting to make up an excuse as to what she was doing, Rita pulled the picture of the accused rapist out of her jacket pocket.
"A name, and you go free."
"What? Who's name? What do you mean free? I aint your slave!"
"Calm down. Now we all know what you really were doin' just then, and I'll forget I ever saw it, if you give us a name of the man in this picture."
After struggling a little more, and then finally giving up, she gave the picture a nice hard look.
"Gil., Gilbert Shells aight? Dang! Now am I free? Can I get going?"
"Where can we find this Gil.?"
"Right there!"
Pointing up to a window in the building on the corner.
"He lives with his ma'."
"Thanks. You should think about finding another corner. Beat it."
Fade Out
Scans the beautiful cities many various sites, until comes once again upon our two female detectives knocking on a door.
After clearing her throat and disguising her voice, Connie says "Uhmmm, excuse me Miss? There was a package on the stoop addressed to you, I brought it up because I figured you didn't see it."
An older woman, between the ages of 50 and 60 opens it a crack.
"I don't think it's mine, I don't ever receive packages anymore."
Voice back to normal
"New York City Police ma'am, is your son home?"
"Which one, Gilbert?"
Opening the door for them,
"Or is it Ian again? Did Ian do something wrong again? I swear I haven't seen him in weeks!"
Interrupting,
"Ma'am, it's about your son Gilbert. Is he here?"
Surprised,
"Why yes, yes he is. He's asleep. Would you like me to wake him up?"
"Please,"
The older woman walks off down a hall and after a little hustling and bustling in a room to the left, we hear a window open. The older woman crying after him,
"Hey! Gilbert! Where are you, what are you, hey!"
Connie and Rita charge into the room, guns drawn, to catch Gil trying to escape out the window.
"Freeze!"
Gilbert stops trying to escape, just long enough to turn his head and see two guns pointed at him. He freezes, puts his hands in the air, and steps back into the room.
The detectives take him into custody and bring him back to the house, where he quickly admits to raping Amelia, stating that he wanted to get in the newspaper, and get a lot of publicity, because as a child, and even now, he never gets any. His older brother Ian is always in the spotlight, and he was sick of it. He picked Amelia out to be the one for no particular reason.
After hearing this, a shocked and disgusted Ortiz storms out of the room and into the locker room. Bracing herself, and holding herself up over the sink, trying to keep the vomit down, she tries to stop the room from spinning. A few minutes later, Connie comes in to see if everything's all right.
"You okay? Rita, what's wrong, you look sick."
"I'm fine, I think I might becoming down with something, that's all."
"I'm serious what's wrong?"
"I'm fine Connie, just leave me alone!"
Hesitant,
"Okay, are you sure you're all right?"
Regaining a little of her composure,
"Yea, I'm sure. Sorry for snapping."
Rita sits down on the bench, and holds her head in her hands, rubbing her temple as to make a headache go away. Connie joins her.
"Rita, you know you can talk to me right? About anything? We're partners, and to me you're a friend, a very good friend. I'll listen. Are you sure you don't wanna talk?"
"Yea, I'll be fine."
Connie hugs Rita, and then gets up to leave.
"Okay, well, call me if you need to chat. No time's too late okay? I'm gunna go bring this Gilbert jerk to booking, do you think you could handle the fives? Andy and I promised Theo that we'd have a family movie night tonight."
Rubbing a few stray tears from her eyes,
"Yea, go ahead, thanks for bringing Gil. I'll do the paperwork, have fun."
Smiling,
"Okay, thanks."
Connie closes the door, leaving Rita in the locker room alone, to ponder things of which she's kept inside for far too long.
Fade out.
Andy and John's case was wrapped up by making it to the apartment before the family booked again, and catching them in the act. It was true, their daughter was being beaten, and thrown in the closet for hours at a time as well. The daughter was put into the system, and John brought her over to child services, while Andy had the parents write out their sad and sorry explanations as to why they even laid one hand on their poor little girl, and brought them to booking. Andy explained the nights plans to his partner, and promised to get the next fives.
John too had a date that night, so he had been sure to take a lot of notes during the day, of what happened and so forth. His fives were being finished, just as Rita was coming out of the locker room.
John put on his jacket, said his good-byes, and was out the door to a night at the movies with the Doc.
Greg and Baldwin's case finally was complete. Brooklyn police had some missing pieces of the "Puzzle" that was so hard to solve, and once the forces united, it was very easy to finish. The detectives from Brooklyn handled the paperwork, and Baldwin and Greg went out for a run together before both heading home.
Rita was sitting at her desk, finishing up on the fives, when Lt. Tony Rodriguez walked out of his office.
"You just about done?"
"Just about."
"I noticed that you didn't take a lunch break today."
"Yea, our case didn't really allow it. I'll just grad a bite after I'm done here."
"Well, I was in a meeting most of the day, and was unable to grab a lunch either. Wanna come with?"
"I don't know if I'll be done in time."
"I'll wait."
Smiling,
"Okay."
Rita finished up, grabbed her purse and jacket, and headed out with Tony to a bar/restaurant around the corner.
Tony: You look like you could use a drink. I know I could. You interested?
Rita: I am, actually.
Rita and Tony sat and talked about the case she worked that day, Tony mostly listened, and Rita mostly talked and drank. By the time they were done eating, Rita was way too drunk to drive. Without seeing any other alternative, Tony helped Rita into his car, brought her back to his place, and let her sleep on the couch. He made sure she was totally comfortable, before settling down himself.
About 2 hours later, Tony was awaken by Rita's tossing and turning and talking and moaning in the other room. He got up and went to see what was wrong.
"No, No Stop! I Don't Want To! Stop! Get Off, Stop!!"
Tony shook her awake.
Rita woke up and began to cry. Tony held her in his arms, and rocked her back and forth, as she buried her face in his robe sleeve. Between sobs, was the explanation Connie was looking for earlier.
"I was only 22......I didn't want to...... It's not my fault......He said not to tell anyone...... He had a gun, and said he'd kill Don......I don't know why I didn't...... I should have said........ I'm so sorry......"
Rita broke down. Tony didn't know what to say. He just had to be with her. To hold her. As Rita's crying slowly subsided, and she pulled herself together, she decided she'd be okay to go home. She'll call a cab, and pick up her car tomorrow. She thanked Tony for listening, and apologized for being an emotional wreck. He told her not to mention it. He was here whenever she needed him.
In the cab ride home, Rita sat there, staring out the window. Not many cars were on the road this early in the morning. Everything was silent. She could tell that her driver was partially deaf, when she spoke, she had to be sure it was loud and clear. After about 15 minutes, all of the sudden, tires screeched, another car ran the light ahead and was coming straight at them.
"Watch out!" Rita screamed.
But it was to late. Crash! Crack! Clink! The car had ran straight into the door she was seated by and had moved away from. At the speed it was traveling, it caved the whole back end of the car in. Rita was quickly entrapped by sharp pieces of metal from all sides and cut by hundreds of pieces of glass from the shattered windows. She heard two loud thuds, the cabs horn started sounding, and that was the last she remembered.

9:00 AM Hospital room at Bellevue
Connie, PAA John Irvin, John Clark Jr., Andy, Lt. Rodriguez, Baldwin, Greg, and Valerie were all gathered in the room, surrounding Ritas bed. Dr. Jennifer Devlin walked in holding a clip board.
"Her surgeries went as well as could have been expected. She has 4 broken ribs, her left arm is fractured, and her right leg is broken in three places. She's got a pretty deep gash in her right hand, and needed stitches for that. Her neck was cut by a very sharp piece of glass as well, and she lost a lot of blood. She's got a concussion, and is now in a state of unawareness. Other then that, it's just a bunch of cuts, scrapes, and bruises. It's no telling when she'll wake up, but anything's possible. The driver of the cab is fine, he fractured his left arm, but other than that, is fine."
John: I'm still a little hazy as to why she was taking a cab home at 5 o' clock in the morning in the first place?
The room was silent.
Connie: I'm sure she'll be fine.
John: She WILL BE!
All of the sudden the machine's hooked up to Rita start to buzz and beep loudly, and blood is seeping through the blanket. Doctor Devlin runs to her side as to stabilize her, but is confused about what's going on. She grabs Rita's gurney and starts to wheel it into the hall.
Connie: What's wrong with her? What's happening?
Dr. D.: She was pregnant. She's had a miscarriage.
Connie is shocked to hear this. As Rita is rushed off into an operating room, PAA John starts to cry, and runs off to the little boys room to dry his tears. Greg, although he'd seen this before, had to turn away. Baldwin didn't understand, and John was in a state of utter shock. Valerie's heart went out to Rita, for she had experience this too, and Andy just rubbed Connie's shoulders, trying to comfort her, as she began to cry.
'She didn't know she was pregnant. I know she didn't. She would have told me! Who's the father? I know she wasn't aware of this, she would have told me!' Connie thought to herself.
Tony stood in the corner of the room, feeling guilty for letting her go home, feeling sad because he knew she'd been raped. Although in her dream she said she was 22, it must have been more recent, for her to feel the way she did that morning, it must have been something recent and she just kept it inside. Most of all, Tony was afraid because the woman he love's life lays in the hands of her ex-boyfriends new girlfriend, and he didn't know if he like that. No, if she didn't come out of this all right, he didn't know what he'd do.
