Poltergeist:
german word signifying literally a spirit that makes noise or an uproar. As early as 1460, poltergeist phenomena was recorded but attributed to demons and witches. 1589, Peter Binsfield justified a tenet's breaking a lease if his house was troubled with noisy demons. The poltergeist has been found to be unresponsive to the Christian faith and resists exorcism.
Typical manifestations include:
- Noises or knockings without apparent natural origin, on walls or ceilings, footsteps on floors and staircases.
- uncontrolled movement of small objects, which are sometimes broken and at other times come to rest slowly in apparent defiance of gravity, also spontaneous movement of other small articles and hurling small stones, both inside and outside a house.
- Disappearance of small objects, and their subsequent recovery in unexpected hiding places.
- Occasional major disaster, such as arson.
Poltergeist activity wrongly associated with witchcraft:

The Salmon Falls Assaults 1683
The Bargarran Imposter 1697

Possession:
Spirit, Demon, Devil, etc..., to possess and inhabit a victim. Historically, nuns and chaste men and women seem to be the most afflicted. Perhaps sexual frustration played a role in their delusions.
Old accepted attributes of possession:
- Writhings and contortions of the face and body which could not be produced except under abnormal conditions.
- Vomiting of strange objects.
- Change of voice to deep and gruff.
A different list from 1644, true indications of possession:
- To think oneself possessed.
- To lead a wicked life.
- To live outside the rules of society.
- To be persistantly ill, falling into heavy sleep and vomiting unusual objects.
- To blaspheme.
- To make a pact with the Devil.
- To be troubled with spirits.
- To show a frightening and horrible countenance.
- To be tired of living.
- To be uncontrollable and violent.
- To make sounds and movements like an animal.
Another and more precise list of indications of possession:
- Denial of knowledge of fits after the paroxysm has ended.
- Incessant obscenities and blasphemies.
- Circumstantial descriptions of the sabbat.
- Fear of sacred relics and sacraments.
- Violent cursing at any prayer.
- Lewd exposure and acts of abnormal strength.
- Similar manifestations in other demoniacs.
