February & March Entries
Thursday, February 14, 2002 - 19 weeks

Ok, well it's been a while but I wanted to give a general entry before we have our next scan.

Not much has been happening.  However, the baby is moving around quite a lot.  I can't feel it all the time but it does move quite frequently.  The best way I can describe the feeling is that of going over a small hill in the road pretty fast and when your stomach drops.  Kinda like riding rollercoaster rides except that sometimes it's non-stop.  As I was just typing that sentence the baby kicked!  What I feel, I guess, is too deep for Hugh to feel yet so he is missing out on the movements but I'm sure not for long.

Within just a week and a half I have noticed my uterus getting much bigger and firmer.  It's really strange to see your body go through so many changes.  My breasts have gotten larger and don't show any signs of stopping just yet.  I was hoping I had enough to begin with and didn't need to get any larger lol!!

I have also been having some lower back pain.  I find that getting on all fours is about the only relief I can get from it.  That helps but the pain isn't completely horrible or unbearable just slightly uncomfortable.

I guess that is about it but will have more and hopefully pics when we have our scan next week.

***I have recently discovered Baby Snoopy products online!!!  They don't carry the stuff here but how gorgeous is this stuff!!!  It's so cute and am informed that K-Mart in the US sells the brand.  I think I would go overboard with this one lol!***

10:30AM:
Our midwife appointment was today.  We talked about quite a few things but basically general things I have been hearing about and had questions about..  Jo helped to put my mind at ease after talking to her and I'm glad I feel so comfortable with her.  She did tell us however that from July 1-7 she will be away at a conference but she will make sure I meet who will be replacing her while she is away.  Jo also said that she believes I will deliver the end of June.  She said it was just a gut feeling she had and if it didn't happen then she thought for sure it would be around my due date or over so either way she says she will be here.  I hope so.  We also got to hear the baby's heartbeat again.  It was a bit harder for her to find this time around only because it moves so much and it's not as easy like earlier.  It was nice to hear it though.

3:00PM:
We also had our 20 week scan today.  I can't say that I was highly impressed with this second one.  We went to a different place this time but I didn't exactly know how different it would be.  The quality of the scan wasn't as good at all.  We weren't able to see much and the tech wasn't able to tell us the sex either.  The baby seemed to be lying mostly on it's stomach for a good majority of the scan.  We were told that everything looked fine but we weren't giving scan photos or a report that day.  We should get it all in the mail the week of the 25th.  The good thing about the scan was that we did get to see just exactly how much bigger the baby has gotten.  I couldn't believe how much it grew!  The bones were very prominent and you could see the heart beating.  I will be able to tell more once we get the scans and have the report.  There isn't much to say until then.

We got the ultrasound report in the mail.  This is what it said:

"There is a single, live, active intrauterine fetus.  No fetal abnormality is detected.  Liquor volume is normal.  The placenta is posterior."

So everything is fine with the baby and nothing to be concerned about.  We did get the films from the scan but haven't tried scan them yet.  We aren't sure if it will even be worth scanning but will try when we get some time.

The measurements of the baby were also listed on the report (had to call my midwife to find out what the abbrevations were).  Here they are:

Head Diameter:  52mm - 2in
Head Circumference:  183mm - 7.2in
Abdominal Circumference:  150mm - 5.9in
Femur Length:  35mm - 1.38in

Big developments in the baby's growth.  Early in the morning the baby was moving up a storm so I decided to check my belly to see if I could see it moving.  Well sure enough I did.  I couldn't believe it!  It was so neat to just lay and watch it move around.

Later that afternoon, I had Hugh feel and watch for the baby.  He was finally able to really feel the baby move.  I think he was finally pleased with that.  He also got to see the baby move as well.

I never thought to watch my stomach for movement but a friend mentioned it so I thought I would try since the baby was pretty active.  It wasn't until now that the baby started to move so much anyhow.  I'm glad I tried watching because I was overjoyed with what I saw.

The baby has been extremely active!  Hugh has gotten the chance to feel and see much more.  He's amazed at how much it moves and kicks and at exactly how hard too.  He often asks what it feels like.

The other night, lying in bed, I felt a hard solid spot on the left side of my stomach and reached to feel it.  I think it must have been the baby's head cause it was this round hard spot and wasn't moving for anything.  Finally after some massaging the baby finally moved and I felt a bit more comfortable.

I have been feeling great lately without much to complain but except for maybe the odd ache and pain here and there.  I can't say that I have noticed my stomach getting much larger.  I did however read that from 24 weeks to, I think, 32 weeks your belly gets the biggest.  So I'm there now and should be getting bigger.

My next midwife appointment is March 20.  And we also start birthing classes on April 12th.  So it's all definitely coming along.  It's hard to believe there is just a little over 3 months left to go.

FYI:  The baby can now hear the sounds my stomach makes and heartbeat!

Midwife appointment was today.  Everything seems to be coming along.  She said I was looking good so I guess that's something.  Lately I have been having tailbone and hip discomfort while trying to get to sleep or while sleeping.  I told her about this and she said it's just my body doing everything it needs to do to prepare for the birth.  It's just everything loosening up in preparation.  I can deal with it but it isn't real comfortable.  I also mentioned to her that not getting enough sleep from this was about the only problem I have had lately.  I also filled out a form for admission to Birthcare.  (Doing that just makes everything that much more real and closer!)

She measured my fundal length (the measurement from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus) and it was 23.5cm which is good.  They say it should be about 2 centimeters each side of how many weeks you are.  Hugh and I had measured it on Monday and got 23-something.  She was impressed that we knew about this and had been doing it ourselves.  We also got to hear the baby's heartbeat again.  It's so nice to hear that at every visit!

She also had a look at my films from the last ultrasound.  She said they looked good although some things he seen like a hand or foot and such she couldn't easily pick up on.  She noted that my placenta is posterior which she told me is a good position for the placenta and for giving birth.  She said it's also nice for me cause that means I can see better movement than I would if the placenta was in front.  Having it posterior just means that it is lying on my back and the baby is lying in front of the placenta.  She said it's also good for her too cause she won't have to try and feel the baby through the placenta.  She also told us that there shouldn't be any reason for another ultrasound unless we wanted one.

My next appointment is for April 16th.  I have a scheduled appointment for blood work on the 15th.  After this next midwife appointment in April, the appointments go to every other week.  Then at 36 weeks they to go every week until the baby is born, of course.

I have recently noticed a increase in size to my uterus just over the past few days.  Things are getting firmer.  My belly button has an extremely long way to go yet before it even pops out.  But then again it may not either.  I had a really deep one before getting pregnant.  I also read that the uterus should be about the size of a soccer ball by now and mine isn't even there yet.  I have just noticed a few stretch marks above my belly button.  I don't have that line you get from your belly button to your pubic bone.  (Can't remember what you call it!)  I also read that the baby is now getting it's taste buds so if you are having sweet cravings it could be because of this.  Hey, it works for me!  As long as I can blame it on the baby lol!!!
