1. Hawaiian Monk Seal- These seals are threatened by the Navy's plan to test new missile defense systems near where the seals live. There are about 1,400 of these left. They are a very special species. Hawaiian Monk Seals are loners and often quarrel in close quarters. They are protected under Federal law by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Adults grow to be 7 feet, weigh 600 lbs, and live about 30 years. Their major breeding colonies are in northwestern Hawaii. Their diet consists of eels, small octopus, and reef fish.
2. Guadalupe Fur Seal- Very little is known about this species. Males are about 180 cm and weigh 140 kg.Their fur is black. They live on rough rocky shores in Isla Guadalupe and Baja California. Currently there are thought to be about 500 of this species. It's habitat is protected by the Mexican government.
