Endangered Whales |
1.Bow Head Whale :Bowhead whales live only in the Artic area at the surface of the ocean. Their population count is 8,000 to 12,000.They congregate in small pods of about 3 whales in the spring and in the winter in pods of about 50.Bowheads are skimmers. They eat krill, copepods,pteropods,etc. off the surface of the water. On occasion they are bottom feeders. They grow to be about 50-60 ft. long, weighing 80-110 tons, females being a bit larger.They are right whales with a bow shaped head. 2.Sei Whales:These whales are killed extensively by the Japenese for food. They are not frequently seen on whaling watching trips.Low blubber content saved them from mass slaughter by Californian whalers. 3.Blue Whales:The largest creature to ever live on Earth.They are extremely endangered. The migrate along the Californian coast and can be seen in the summer monthes in Monterey Bay and near Farallon Islands.The Pacific Population is about 1600. 4.Fin Whales: Commonly seen off Californian coast in the summer where they feed on shrimp and small schooling fish. 5.Humpback Whales:Only about 1200 live from Alaskan waters to the west coast of Mexico and Hawaii for the winter. Occasionally one will enter the San Fracisco Bay. 6.Conchita Whale 7.Sperm Whale:Dive very deep to search for food, usually squid, so they are not usually seen near the shore. They were heavily hunted and still are killed by whaling nations. 8.Northern Right Whales:They were hunted to less than 5% of their former numbers. They're the most endangered of great whales and show no signs of recovery. They are rarely seen off the Californian coast. |
