| My arm was itching. Damn grass. I scratched at my skin, wincing as the jagged nails caught randomly. If I could just stop biting them... It was misty outside, but it wasn't too bad, I was still here. Waiting. Sure my hair was sticking to my face and there were pieces of dead and dried grass clinging to my jeans. But that was all ok because... ...I was still waiting... I had been promised this and dammit, I was going to get it. I didn't care if it was raining or that it had already been two hours. I didn't care that there were deep puddles of water under the swings or that even the birds were hiding under the thick branches of the trees. I was still going to wait. I had waited so long, not only here...but for months...just for this damn day. And I was not going to let anything fuck it up for me. I peeked out from under the wooden playhouse, the columns of old, sad wood creaking when I leaned against them. Nothing. No one. Nowhere. I sat back, huddled just above the shiny metal of the slide. Come on please. And it had started out such a good day too. The happiness that I had felt after hearing that voice on the phone, knowing I was so much closer to it than usual. It was so close. All that waiting. All that time! I picked at the shoelaces of my shoes. Maybe... ....maybe... I'd expected too much? The rain was slowly clearing and the time was going on three hours since I'd been here waiting. I closed my eyes. Not coming. Not coming. How could I have been so dumb? I started to climb down the ladder, my shoes barely gripping the metal bars. How stupid. Oh god how stupid I am! I turned once I hit the grass, so useless. ... "Hey." I paused. This was it. "You made it." It was so hard to contain all the glee inside of me. They shrugged, eyes locked to a spot over my left shoulder. "I told you not to call me, I told you not to come. I told you it was over and done with." I laughed and reached to push their hair from their face, they pulled back. "Quit. Just stop and go." "But I waited for you." I smiled brightly. A sharp glare and a voice over a cold shoulder. "Wait for someone else then." I smiled. The End |
