| Open your eyes... look up to the sky and see... wingless flying ants swooping down at me? As Dr. Stephen Yanovaik (an insect ecologist) unpleasently discovered, certain biting ants he brushes off a treetop have a wierd way of maneuvering through the air and swooping onto the tree truck, where they proceeded to bite him again. Dr. Yanovaik was surprised. Wingless insects don't fly, do they? Helped by his fellow scientists, Dr, Yanovaik filmed the ant in question, Cephalotes Atratus, and discovered that the ant's flattened back legs acted like rudders, steering them safely to the tree. Further research showed other wingless bugs also adapted this strange way of getting around! Information from: Yesmag To learn more: visit Dr. Yanoviak's Website |
