| Now, Don't Panic... | ||||||
| My friend and I were invited to a cottage, right? They had a small lake nearby that opens to a river or another. Now, the family who owns the cottage owns a small boat that resembles a large surfboard. My friend and I pulled it into the water and decided to take it for a spin. We unwittingly chose to ride it just as the wind was picking up, and we could only find one paddle to use. We figures we'd just do a short sail across the lake and paddle back. In the middle of the lake was an island, so we decided to aim for it. Unfortunatly, it was close to the mouth of the river where the current turns out to be stronger, but we didnt know that. About halfway there, my friend said that from previous expirience, she learnt that if you close your eyes and let the waves rock you, you feel a pleasant floating sensation. So we closed our eyes... Lo and behold, we opened them and we were in a completely unfamiliar part of the lake! I was fairly sure that we hadnt turned around during our peiod of closing our eyes, so I assumed that we had to paddle to the right of us to get back to the cottage. To make matters worse, we both were semi-blind because both of us weren't wearing our glasses! We half-heartidly started paddling that way, but not very hard because we weren't sure that it was the right way. For all we knew, we where paddling into the river or farther down it! At this point, my friend turned to me and said: "Look, dont start panicking because if you do, I will too..." I didnt reply. A few minutes later the wind picked up and we hardly made any progress at all. Then, we sptted a row boat coming around a corner. We couldnt see who it was, but whoever it was, he was coming our way. My friend and I stopped paddling and waited for him to come close enough for us to see who it was. It turned out to be the father of the family living in the cottage! He tossed us a rope and towed us back to the dock. I was so relieved that we were safe. We actually were paddling the right way, and we were close to aour destination! We just hadn't noticed that there was a small inlet that the waves were pushing us towards. So remember kids, always paddle AGAINST the wind! THE END |
