October 20th, 2006 the tripple door 7PM (all ages) and 10PM (21+) $20 / $18 for Earshot members EARSHOT JAZZ FESTIVAL opens with WAYNE HORVITZ w/GRAVITAS and ODEONQUARTET featuring BILL FRISELL ON THE MAINSTAGE Genre: Modern classical/jazz fusion The show will be a fascinating, contemporary exploration of what was dubbed "Third Stream" music by the great composer/scholar Gunther Schuller in the late 50's. This fusion of classical and jazz idioms grows ever more complete and effective as modern musicians like tonight's principals have become masters of both performance styles. Each of tonight's two shows (7 and 10PM) will feature two sets each. The first set will feature odeonquartet that Wayne has written for a string quartet, called These Hills Of Glory, and a soloist. Well, that soloist is none other than Bill Frisell. The second set will be be the Wayne Horvitz Gravitas Quartet. The quartet is made up of piano, trumpet, bassoon and cello, and features Wayne himself, Ron Miles, Peggy Lee and Sara Schoenbeck. The quartet released Songlines in June of this year to rave reviews. Wayne Horvitz is a music industry unto himself. Based in Seattle, but playing the world’s stage, his past and present projects encompass jazz, funk, big band, electronics, dance, classical, film, and more. A small sampling of his collaborators would include Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Bobby Previte, Robin Holcomb, Julian Priester, Tucker Martine, Eyvind Kang, the Seattle Chamber Players, and Reggie Watts. As a player, he is a virtuoso keyboardist, from grand piano to Hammond B-3 to the most sophisticated synthesizer, master of everything from the cerebral to the most wicked groove. His music has taken him all over North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Like Dave Douglas, he has fronted several fascinating bands, including the eclectic downtown New York project The President, the rockish Pigpen, the funky Zony Mash, and the all-acoustic Sweeter Than The Day. As a composer, Horvitz’ range astonishes. Whatever the genre explored, Jazz Weekly has noted: "Horvitz’s understanding of country, blues, folk, and even singer/songwriter-type music is made quite plain....Like Monk and Herbie Nichols, he is able to create memorable and distinctive melody lines from seemingly disparate, even mundane, motifs and phrases." This eclectic command has led to commissions from the NEA, Meet The Composer, The Kronos Quartet, and the Paul Taylor dance company. His film resume includes Gus Van Zant’s "Psycho" and three PBS specials. His more recent CDs include "Farewell Shows: Seattle, WA." (Kufala), "Film Music 1998-2001" (Tzadik) and "Sweeter Than The Day" (Songlines). The odeonquartet - Gennady Filimonov and Jennifer Caine (violin), Heather Bentley (viola), Page Smith (cello)---was the Lehman Ensemble-In-Residence at Cornish from 2001 to 2003 and has performed at Benaroya Hall and the Seattle Chamber Music Festival, Belle Arte Chamber Music Series and many more. Gavin Borchert of Seattle Weekly has written: "Just a few seasons old, this young, vibrant group has made a Kronos-like commitment to a 20th century music all over the artistic map - from serialism, evocations of folk and pop music from around the world, American classics and European neo-romanticism." On Seattle legend Bill Frisell, the New York Times wrote, "It's hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he's found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music and also takes on another often-avoided subject, tenderness."
