Old Dominion University Police Department


This is the original website of the Old Dominion University Police Department. This website was created in 1997 by Officer Marc Huckless and Officer Hank Hayes. In 1999 the website was transferred to the offical university home page.

The Old Dominion University Police Department is a state certified law enforcement agency that provides public safety and security to the university community. Virginia State Law (Chapter 17 Section Code 23.232-23.238) University and College Campus Police Officers shall carry the same authority as the local police. Campus Police Officers are required to complete all law enforcement academy training mandated by the Department of Criminal Justice Services. The department is comprised of 50 armed police officers, 70 unarmed security, and 8 emergency dispatchers. The police officers have arresting powers and patrol on and around the campus 24 hours and day, 7 days a week. In addition to patrolling off campus the department has concurrent jurisdiction with Norfolk Police and responds to calls for services one mile around campus grounds.

The police department is located inside the Public Safety Building at 4516 Monarch Way Norfolk, Virginia. The department's main number is (757) 683-4000. Students and staff are directed to report all emergencies and suspicious activity to this number. The Old Dominion University Student Escort Service is sponsored by the ODU Police Department, and is designed to provide a safer, more secure environment for students whose only means of transportation on the campus is walking. There are currently 9 part time students working for the Student Escort Service. These students are under the direction of the Escort Coordinator and Evening shift police sergeant. Many of the escorts are members of the ODU Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) programs on campus.
