Jean Mullin, Secretary of North Shields Branch of North East Pensioners' Association (NEPA), discussing public transport issues with Margaret Wright of Moor Park Community Centre. Together with other groups, the North Shields Branch recently won the support of North Tyneside Councillors for the campaign for free public transport for pensioners, after 2000 local people signed the petition on this issue. Jean also raised the issue of inconvenient bus routes. These particularly affect pensioners and others on restricted incomes, requiring them to use 2 or more bus services just to attend doctor's or hospital appointments, access shops, visit family and friends, and all the other activities of normal life in the community.
