January 1905Sunday January 1 Today the first of the year, not a speck of snow and warm, warm and almost rain. Everybody worked. Mabel at Northville. Monday January 2 Warm A.M., some rain turning to snow, and such an afternoon blowing a hurricane, snow flying through the air in sheets. I am glad it is a 1/2 holiday this P.M. and I can stay in and enjoy the fire. Mabel came back from Northville. Tuesday January 3 Cold, windy, but not as bad as yesterday. Wednesday January 4 through Friday January 6 [no entry] Saturday January 7 Cold, fair day. Down town evening, bought an alarm clock, underwear, Etc. Sunday January 8 Cold, fair. Gummie and I went to Northville. I spent the day with my folks and came home on the 4:30 car. Found Howard quite sick when I got home, must be worms. His eyes were dull and rolling, twitching of muscles and talking in his sleep, seeing things, some fever. Monday January 9 Cold windy day, some snow. Howard a good deal better but is not right yet. But he insists that he is not sick or in pain, says "Howard aint sick, aint nothing the matter with Howard." Gummie came back. Tuesday January 10 Gummie sick, Howard sick, Mama sick, Mrs. Parks our nurse cant come when Anna is sick, she writes she has a place that will take her past the time. Wednesday January 11 Fearful day, blowing snow drifting, turned to sleet in P.M. Terrible walking. Gummie not much better. Thursday January 12 Warmer, rained last night, about 6 inches of snow was on the ground, ice on the bottom then water and slush. Turned cold P.M. Friday January 13 Cold. Saturday January 14 Cold but clear beautiful day. Anna sick last night and all day today. Put the stove upstairs today noon. Got nurse "Mrs. Slater" and Dr. Bell up here about 10 P.M. but nothing happened. Sunday January 15 Very cold, about zero, and strong wind. Anna sick all night. Dr. Bell staid here all night and in consequence Mabel and her Mother sat up all night. The rest of us went to bed expecting to be called any minute but we slept all night and nothing happened. Howard is as good as can be and seems to realize something is happening and is as meek as Moses. The Dr. went away all day but came back about 10 P.M. and staid till the baby came at 12:45 A.M. Monday January 16 Cold and clear. The girl we were expecting proved to be a bouncing boy of 9 lbs., certainly a fine boy. Anna was very sick and took chloroform. Howard slept through it all and knew nothing till morning. He thought the baby was all right and wants us to keep it, called it his "little brodder". Tuesday January 17 Cold but a beautiful day. Anna and baby getting on fine. And we like the nurse too, we were afraid we would not like her, she is especially good with the baby. Wednesday January 18 Warmer, rained some this P.M. Anna does not feel as well today but is really doing fine. Thursday January 19 Warm fine day, thawing a great rate. Friday January 20 Warm, fine, thawing. Geo. & Anna called. Saturday January 21 Nasty day, warm. Wet snow fell lazily all day but only about 2 inches fell. Anna is getting along fine. Dr. says she is like clock work. Baby seems to manage to sleep all day and awake crying with colic all night. Aunt Dill and Inez called. Sunday January 22 Cold, clear, bright, just grand. Trying to select a name for the baby, like Kenneth Joy, but have not decided. Sam, Elmer, Edna and Clarence called. Monday January 23 Cold, gray and threatening. Mrs. McLeod called. Tuesday January 24 Cold, clear. Mrs. Lew Cudworth called. Mrs. Burns called. Anna not feeling so well today but nothing serious. Baby sleeps better nights. Wednesday January 25 Awful day, fierce wind, very cold, snow blowing and drifting. Anna has an awful earache. Gummie sick. Thursday January 26 Clear and very cold. Annas ear better, she sat up about 5 minutes this evening. Friday January 27 Windy, snow and cold. Saturday January 28 Very cold, about zero. Dr. called and said Annas ear would have to have careful attention or it might prove serious. Sunday January 29 More zero but fine day, worked. Monday January 30 Still zero weather. Anna walked to the bath room and back today. The nurse went away today. Dr. Bell called today. Gummie got a card from David saying he had reached Los Angeles, Cal. Tuesday January 31 Fine day. Anna's ear better. |

February 1905 Wednesday February 1 Not so cold, snowy and disagreeable. Dr. Bell called again today. Anna better, up all day, tends baby, and gets around on her feet some. Thursday February 2 Very cold, 4° below but bright sunshine all day. The Bear saw his shadow today all right. I suppose that means 6 weeks more of winter. Well we will see. Anna getting stronger fast, her ear does not bother much now. The baby just stretches and grows and is very good nights. Friday February 3 2° below but beautiful and warming up. Saturday February 4 Very cold, damp, gray day. Mrs. Hanna called. Mabel went to Northville. Sunday February 5 Very cold, a very high wind from the East makes the house very cold, can hardly keep warm when the wind comes from the East. Snowed some, the snow flying fiercely through the air. Mabel came home bringing a crock of butter. Baby weighed 10# today. Monday February 6 Cold but beautiful day. But we have about 4 inches more of snow to walk through this morning. Fine Sleighing. Anna and baby doing fine. Anna does all of her bedroom work and takes all care of the baby. Tuesday February 7 Very cold, just zero this A.M. but a fine day. Wednesday February 8 Another high wind from the East and another day of cold house. Annas room upstairs is the only comfortable room in the house. Blizzard P.M., just fearful afternoon. Thursday February 9 About 4 inches more of snow, warmer, rained a little after the snow. Fearful walking today. Friday February 10 [no entry] Saturday February 11 [no entry] Sunday February 12 Warmer, snowed all night and nearly all day, 4 or 5 inches more of snow, we must have a good foot of snow now on the level and none goes away, it keeps so cold. Anna came down stairs for her meals today for the 1st time. Monday February 13 The baby grows and grows, we cannot make out who he looks like and we have not decided on a name yet. Very cold again this morning, 4° below and was 2° below at 10 A.M. It seems fearful cold tonight. Tuesday February 14 Well this is St. Valentine's day and one you read about, it was 10° below when I got up at 6 A.M. I knew as soon as I jumped out of bed there was deadly stuff in the air, although we had good fires and the house was warm, yet you could feel it in the air. Blacks Thermometer was 17° below at 3 and 18° below at 6 A.M. But it came up fast after 6 A.M., at 8 it was 8° below and at 10 zero. But a high wind made it terrible to face. Tonight it is about 10° above and snowing slightly. The cold is general all over the south and west, colder in some southern states than here. I did suffer with the cold but could be more comfortable with it a little warmer. Wednesday February 15 10° below this A.M. and awful cold all day, yesterday [was] the coldest day in 30 years, so the papers say. Thursday February 16 Still cold, 10° below again and the wind blew a regular hurricane, making a terrible forenoon, got warmer afternoon. Could not come home to dinner today so much mail, got dinner at a restaurant on Woodward. Friday February 17 Well it seems like summer this morning after the cold spells. About 20° above this A.M. but oh the wind, it fairly howls and the drifting snow fills the air and is blinding, one can hardly stand against it. The trains and suburbans cars are having a tough time of it today. Grand Duke Sergé of Russia was killed today while riding in his carriage, a bomb was thrown under the carriage blowing him to atoms. Russia is certainly having her troubles. Saturday February 18 Down below zero again this morning but warmed up and was a beautiful day. The wind disappeared somewhere thank goodness but the snow drifts are fearful to get through. Gummie went to Northville today to stay over Sunday. Sunday February 19 Beautiful day, warmer, thawing today. Worked for Taylor today. Miss Shaffer called. Monday February 20 Warmer, thawed all day, snow going fast. Tuesday February 21 Dark, cloudy, damp day, almost rain. Clarkson is sick, the reason Gummie does not come back. Wednesday February 22 Geo. Washington birthday. Warm, almost rain. 1/2 holiday, just rested. Gummie came back this afternoon. Mabel went to the Opera this evening. Thursday February 23 A little colder, this is the time when the City is at its worst. The snow is black and dirty and the streets muddy, slushy and nasty and terrible getting around. The baby has acted horrid and Anna is well nigh done up tonight. Howard fell down stairs this forenoon from the top to the bottom. He went bumpty bumpt all the way down and it frightened Anna nearly to death. She thought he was killed sure. Gummie picked him up, but other than a bruise on his forehead and one on his cheek he was not hurt and was soon playing around as if nothing had happened. Gummie and Mabel have gone down to Mrs. Yarnells to spend the evening. Friday February 24 [no entry] Saturday February 25 Snowed lightly, almost rain all the forenoon but cleared P.M. and thawed very fast. But there is lots of snow yet and is still very good sleighing. They say the country roads are the worst in years. Gummie went down town P.M. Sunday February 26 Colder but clear and beautiful. Gummie and Mabel went down to Aunt Dills P.M. Anna and Howard took a little walk, they called on the Hardenburgs, the 1st time Anna has been out since she was sick. They left me with the baby, he is now 6 weeks old and is a bounce and I have noticed the last few days how he has brightened up and begins to notice things, turns his head and studies things. We are afraid he is going to have red hair as it has a very sandy cast. Monday February 27 Mabel and her Mother went to see checkers this evening. Tuesday February 28 [no entry] |

March 1905 Wednesday March 1 Not much of a March day today. Looks as tho it was coming in like a lamb, clear, cold, bright and perfectly beautiful. It snowed a trifle last night. The snow is going gradually and it is a good thing that it is for there was so much of it had it gone fast it would have caused floods. The baby is just fine these days, sleeps well nights. He can smile now and he gets better looking everyday. Thursday March 2 Another beautiful day. Anna took Howard and went down town, bought Howard shoes and stockings, etc. She went to Dr. Bells office and paid him up to date. Mabel came home sick A.M. Friday March 3 Warm beautiful forenoon, some snow afternoon. Got a hair cut and whisker trimmed. I did not think I would like whiskers when I let them grow but I do, my face is more comfortable and I have not had a cold this winter. I do not [think] as it is due to them but I dont know what else. Saturday March 4 Cold windy, more like a typical March day. Mabel went to Northville. I suppose they are having a big time at Washington today on account of the inaugeration of the President [Theadore Roosevelt], but I am not there. Sunday March 5 Cold fair day. Every carrier had to work today on account of the excessive mail caused by the Primary Election tomorrow but really there was no excess. We weighed the baby today and he tipped the scales at 12 1/2 #. Mabel came back from Northville. Monday March 6 Cold clear beautiful day. I did not go to the Primaries to vote, I was too tired even to do that. It seems as tho it was a hard day for the whole family, as we all went to bed early. Tuesday March 7 Warmer, threatening rain. Wednesday March 8 Fine day. Took a lunch today and went down town at noon, bought a pair of $3.50 Douglas shoes and went down to Ednas and purchased a few things. Came home at night with a terrible headache. Mr. & Mrs. Wood called to see Gummie. Thursday March 9 Beautiful day. Rode my wheel to my route P.M. for the 1st time, the ice in the streets is just beginning to clear away so one can ride, but only on streets where the sun can get at them. There are lots of streets that would be good sleighing yet. The paper says the Japs have Kuropalkin surrounded after 11 days of terrific fighting and terrible slaughter of lives. I suppos that the greatest battle in the history of the world has been going on over there the past week, and we scarcely give it a thought. But still I think the American people are intensely interested and in sympathy with the Japs. Friday March 10 Colder and beautiful. The thermometer has hovered around the freezing point since the cold snap in the middle of February, sometimes below, sometimes above. But it has been as fine winter weather for this time of the year as I ever saw. The snow and ice is going so slow that it seems as tho the ground just absorbs it. The fields are all bare, but a good many shady streets are nearly as icy as ever. I got a new pair of rubbers today in exchange for a pair I had worn just a week and had cracked through. Saturday March 11 Fine day. Gummie left us today and went home, and Mother & Father Dean came in to stay over Sunday. They came here for the day and went down to Ednas to stay to night. I went down town after supper and exchanged the shoes I got in the middle of the week for a 1/2 size larger. Sunday March 12 Beautiful day. Went to Church, went over to Hardenburghs Eve., Father and Mother was there, Geo. and his wife came over and Edna and Clarence came, we had a good time there then they came over here to see the baby. Father and Mother staid all night. Monday March 13 Still beautiful weather. Father and Mother here till after noon then went to Northville. Tuesday March 14 Colder but fine day. Anna had to take up all the work alone today, she got along splendid because the baby was so good. Wednesday March 15 Colder morning but a most beautiful day. Howard has a very keen imagination, he has "nother" boy that he talks to and he has a party of children once in a while and entertains them all and talks to them and he will say there they are Mama. Thursday March 16 Warmer, just 6 weeks since the Bear saw his shadow the 2 of Feb., I am beginning to believe there is something in that, it kept cold up to today and then turned as warm almost as summer. I walked around today without gloves and my hat on the back of my heard and my cloths felt heavy and hot. I went up to Geo. this evening to talk Oil. Geo. is Secretary of the Leamington [and] Comber [Oil] Co. and according to him [it has] very promising prospects. I finally put in $50, I would hate to lose it but I would also hate to lose a chance of getting rich. They began to drill for oil the 11 of March at Leamington Oil fields. Friday March 17 Another warm spring like day. Ones clothes feel rather heavy and warm and that tired feeling is coming. I saw a couple of Robins today, my first Robins this spring. We about decided today to name the baby Bennett Joy Dean. We had thought of naming him Laurence Joy Dean but we got to talking it over and thought it would be so nice to name him after his Great Grandfather, Great Uncle, and Father. So if we do not change our minds again it will be Bennett J. Dean. Anna took the kids and went in to Burns this afternoon and made a call. Belle was over. Saturday March 18 Very warm, rained some, ones clothes feel heavy and sticky. Mabel went to Northville. Sunday March 19 Colder, rained all last night and nearly all day, very disagreeable day. Home all day. Went to the car to meet Mabel through the wet and rain, she brought 4 doz. eggs @ 16¢, they are getting down, have been as high as 38¢ this winter. Maybe we can afford to eat a few now. Monday March 20 Colder, the rain turned to sleet and the streets and walks this morning are one smooth sheet of ice. I had a hard time to keep on my feet but it was nothing but slush by noon. Went down town at noon and bought Howard a little gold ring for his 3rd birthday. Went to the Bank and drew out $40, to put into Leamington and Comber Oil Co. I put another $5 with it and went up to Geo in the Eve. to give it to him but he was not at home. I presume I am foolish to invest my money that way but the company is capitalized and organised in so sensible [a] way that it promised well. Time will tell how foolish I am. Tuesday March 21 Cold, cloudy, and disagreeable. Went up to Geo. at noon. He was not there but I left the money with his wife. The P.O. is weighing the mail again, began last Thurs. or Fri. Ordered a ton of coal today, hope this will be the last for this year. Mabel and Anna went to a Church concert tonight, I staid with the children. Howard went to bed, the baby slept in the buggie and I in my chair all the time they were gone, so I did not fare very hard. Wednesday March 22 Warmer, another cloudy gloomy day. Thursday March 23 Warm, Fair A.M., cloudy P.M. Howard is 3 years old today. He got a jar of candy, a pair of little imatation rabbits and a gold ring. He thinks everything of the ring, it does look cute on his finger. Howard is a pretty good boy, minds fairly well, is not very rough or boisterous and is a little bashful among strangers. He appreciates everything you get for him so it makes it a pleasure to get anything for him. He says please, thank you, excuse me, Etc. and he can repeat Mother Goose rhymes by the doz. Friday March 24 Warm, rained some last night. Saturday March 25 Very warm, like summer. Howard can play out doors such days as this. It is just such weather as it was the year he was born and we paid dearly for it in April. I wonder if it will be that way this year. Anna and Mabel have gone down town and left me with the kids. Howard has gone to bed and the baby is asleep in the buggy. He is a fine baby so far just as good as can be. He [is] good to sleep alone in the buggy and wakes up and coos away to himself for a while then drops off to sleep again. Sunday March 26 Warm, but very threatening. Worked. Went up to Geo. in the evening, found him alone and had a good long visit. Monday March 27 A most beautiful spring day. Anna and I went down to the Church tonight and selected our pew for the coming year, we got pew 26, Edna pew 25. Tuesday March 28 Well this is my 37th birthday and a beautiful day it is too. Very warm, more like a June day than March, the birds are singing, the frogs croaking. The mud is pretty well dried up and the grass actually looks green, especially on well kept lawns. The children are all out to play and the morning paper had a picture in [it] of people sitting and snoozing in the public parks, a sure sign of spring. But I presume we have yet to have a good spell of bad weather before we will feel safely launched into spring and summer. Wednesday March 29 Very warm. The paper said that yesterday broke all previous records for warm weather for the 28 of March, the thermometer stood 77° at noon and I guess it was fully as warm today. Got my wiskers trimmed today. Thursday March 30 Rained last night, colder, but cleared into a beautiful day. Anna and Mabel went down to Aunt Dills after supper. Friday March 31 Cold but fair day, not much Lion about this, it came up windy and threatening towards night. I suppose it tried to go out like a Lion because it came in like a lamb, but it did not make out anything very fierce and March has been a remarkable fine month for March. |

April 1905 Saturday April 1 Cold, cloudy and windy, not very bad but more like March usually is than March was. Mabel went to Northville, Anna printed the pictures of baby and Howard and they are quite good and cute.
Sunday April 2 Cold but fine day. Everybody worked today on account of Election stuff but not much more mail than usual came in. Mabel came back, Anna and Howard went to the car to meet her. Monday April 3 Rain nearly all day. Voted today, they had a machine to vote with, I think I would like them after I got used to them. I have a bad cold in my head, the first one I have had this winter. Tuesday April 4 Cloudy, very windy and threatening. Norine came in today to stay over night. Mabel, Norine & I went to the Temple Theater Eve. Wednesday April 5 Cold but fine weather. Norine went down town to get her eyes tested, then home. I went over to see Geo. in the evening. Thursday April 6 Cold, quite cold, but clear. Anna said the baby tried to reach for something Howard had today but did not know how to use his hands. Mrs. Yarnell called. Aunt Eliza called. Friday April 7 Nasty day, snowed a wet sloppy snow nearly all day. I went and bought a door mat today, I have been going to for some time and the weather today made me think of it. Saturday April 8 Beautiful bright day, cool. Dont seem possible that two days could be so different as yesterday and today. Sunday April 9 Just beautiful spring day. Warm enough to be out all day and sit on the steps and have the doors open. I took care of the children and Anna went to Church. We went down to Edna's in the afternoon to call. Monday April 10 April showers today. Rained and thundered in the night and warm showers all day. Tuesday April 11 Rain this morning and cloudy and threatening all day. I took Howard to the Barber Shop, cor. 14 & Warren, today noon and he was treated to his first real hair cut. He acted fine and looked so different one would hardly think him the same boy. Anna took him down town this afternoon and bought him a new hat. He expects to go out to his Gummies tomorrow to stay till Sunday. The baby staid with Mrs. Burns while Anna was down town. Howard weighed 30# on a penny in the slot machine today. Wednesday April 12 Cold beautiful day. Norine came in today and took Howard back with her. Howard has been full of the things he was going to do out to Gummies. He was anxious to go and did not seem to care about leaving his Mama. Edna telephoned me today that Father had fallen off of a barn, and was quite badly hurt last week but was better now and up. Thursday April 13 Warmer and beautiful. It seems rather queer not having Howard around, I will bet he has put in a day of it today it has been so fine. Friday April 14 Colder and nasty, snow all forenoon, not so fine for Howard today. The baby seems to miss him anyway he acts different, he dont like to be left alone and makes a teasing noise when his Mama leaves him in the cart. He tried so hard to use his hands today to get something Auntie had. He would make up a face and grunt and his hands would wave around and would finally land in his eye or mouth, it is so comical to watch him. I heard today that Geo. struck a dry hole for his oil well "too bad." Saturday April 15 Another cold horrid day, snow fluries and very damp and nasty. We got a card from Gummie today, she said Howard was having a good time but had asked once or twice to go to Mamas house. Sunday April 16 Cold windy, blizzard one minute, sunshine the next. I staid with the baby and Anna went to Church, he slept all the time she was gone, a snap for me. Auntie and Howard came home about 6 P.M., Howard was covered with snow when he came in, seemed glad to get home and proceeded to get all of his play things out into the middle of the room. Monday April 17 Cold windy and snow squally, cold enough to freeze last night. Miss Smith took Howard over on Grand River to get his picture taken at a penny picture place. She said they could hardly get him in to the room.
Tuesday April 18 Froze last night, cold and windy. Mrs. Yarnell called. Miss O'Brien called. Went away out on Boston Boulvd. today noon to see a Lawn Mower but it was sold, stopped at Geo. a minute on my way back. Howard said he wished he had some feathers so he could fly out to Gummies house, he evedently likes it out there.
Wednesday April 19 Warmer, quite a decent day. The cold weather has kept vegetation back considerably and the frosts have done a good deal of harm. The grass seems no greener or taller and the trees no nearer leaved out than 2 weeks ago. Anna and Mabel went to prayer meeting this evening. Thursday April 20 Warm but rainy. Friday April 21 Colder, heavy rain last night, miserable weather. Norine came in today. Saturday April 22 Cold but beautiful day. Norine went home today. Mabel went to Northville. Sunday April 23 Easter. Beautiful day. Worked A.M. Took a walk with Anna and children P.M. Mabel came from Northville in time to go to Church with Anna in the Eve. Monday April 24 Fine day, cool. Miss Smith took Howard over on Grand [River] for his pictures but they were not finished. Tuesday April 25 Beautiful day. Howard has a bad cold in his head and is cross and very hard to manage. Anna nearly goes distracted over him but the baby makes up for some of it. He is so good that we do not know what to make of him and everybody just falls in love with him and wants to steal him. He sits in his buggy almost straight up and if laying down he will lift his head clear up and almost sit up alone, he is a very strong and healthy child. Mrs. Burns told Anna today that she would have to raise $1.50 a month on the rent. Wednesday April 26 Warmer, threatening rain all day. Howards cold better and he went to bed tonight good natured and happy, bid his dolls and rabbits, dogs, horses, Etc good night, gave us all a kiss and pattered upstairs to bed. Thursday April 27 Much warmer, Winter clothes feel heavy and uncomfortable. Friday April 28 Very warm, put on my summer coat today, doors and windows open, people sitting out, etc., fields beginning to look yellow with dandylions, trees just showing a little green. Got a letter from Herbert. Mabel gone to the Church Social. Saturday April 29 Fair day. Mrs. McLeod & kids called. Mabel went home. Sunday April 30 Cool but beautiful day. Went to Church in the morning. Took a walk with Howard afternoon. |

May 1905 Monday May 1 Cold, cloudy. The City started on Standard Time at midnight last night, this I believe is the 3rd time they have tried to make a go of it. I wonder how it will come out this time. I voted for it but I do not like it personally. Mabel came back sick today. Tuesday May 2 Cold but beautiful day, got very warm by night. Anna trying to clear house as fast as possible with 2 kids. Wednesday May 3 Well this is a regular summer scorcher today, up to 80°. Thursday May 4 Very warm. D. F. Holmes came nearly being killed by st. car today. He was taken out from under the fender but was not hurt very bad, a small bone in one leg was broken. Friday May 5 Big rain last night, warm today. My tire on the rear wheel gave out yesterday. Berry put a 2 hand one on for 50¢, I thought I would see if it would pay . I will be surprised if it does. Anna, Mabel and Howard went over on Grand River this Eve. and got Howard a pair of shoes. Saturday May 6 Rained all forenoon and one or two heavy showers P.M. Anna took the children up to Helen McLeods birthday (4th) party this afternoon. The children had a splendid time. Sunday May 7 Cooler but a most beautiful day. Worked from 9 till 1, 1/2 hour longer than usual. Took long walk in the afternoon with Anna and children. Mabel at Northville. Mrs. Leaver called eve. Monday May 8 Cool, some rain P.M. We still keep the baseburner going. The baby is still keeping up his reputation for goodness and is just beginning to find out what his hands are for. Went over to see Geo. this evening. Tuesday May 9 Cold, frost this morning. Put on my winter coat again. Went down to a gold stock meeting this evening in the Whitney Bld. Wednesday May 10 Very cold rain, miserable. Thursday May 11 Rain, rain, and more rain, poured all day with scarcely a minute let up. Mrs. Walker here sewing. Bert Hart and his girl called this evening. We had a dark spell this A.M. about 8:30 when buildings were lit up like night. I could hardly see the addresses on letters. Friday May 12 Turned out a fine day. Mrs. Walker here sewing. Saturday May 13 Beautiful day, everything fresh and green. Mrs. Walker here sewing, if she had not come we were going to Northville. Sunday May 14 Fine day, except one or two showers. Howard and I went to Northville, Anna did not feel well enough. The country is just beautiful, the orchards were in full bloom and everything so fresh and beautiful. Howard likes nothing better than to go to Gummies house and he just put in his best licks all day. And when we came home at night he no more than got on the car and into my lap then he went fast asleep and slept all the way home. The car was crowded and people had to stand but we were fortunate enough to get a seat. Edna & Clarence were out and came in with us. I went to see Mother, she has been very sick for a week but was better. Ernie came down and we had a good visit. Ernie is supposed to be out with the family on account of trouble with his wife but nothing was said about that and it seemed like old times to see him. Monday May 15 Fine, except an occasional shower. Howard still uses the word "punch" for smell, he always has and we cannot get him to say smell. Yesterday at Gummies he was smelling of some violets and he says, "My those violets are punchy." I attended a gold stock meeting of the Nothern Developing Co. tonight. Tuesday May 16 Big shower about noon otherwise fair. Wednesday May 17 Cold and rainy. Thursday May 18 Cold, damp and wretched weather. We are mighty glad our fire is still going for we surely need it today. Friday May 19 Cold but fine day. Howard fell off of the back [steps] tonight and bumped his nose and bled like a stuck hog but he was soon over it. [I] suppose Auntie asked him if he would like to go down to Aunt Dills with her and he said "Howard spose that would be a good keme [Reme?]." Saturday May 20 Fair, cool. Sunday May 21 Fair, cool. Worked. Do not feel well, gripp. Anna, Howard and baby gone for a walk. Monday May 22 Cold miserable day. Sick, could not go to work, passed a wretched night. Tuesday May 23 Fine day but cold. Had the Dr. today, quite sick. Wednesday May 24 Beautiful day. Dr. came again today but thought I was over the worst of it. I feel better anyway. Thursday May 25 Fair day untill about 5 P.M. then heavy cold rain. I went to work today but do not feel much like working but I feel as tho I could not afford to lay off if I can possibly work. Friday May 26 Cold, fair day, wore my winter coat today, still have a fire. I feel worse today than yesterday but manage to keep at work. Saturday May 27 Cool, beautiful day. Anna and children went to Northville this morning and when I came home to dinner the house was all shut up and so still I suppose I will have to Bach. till next Wednesday. I dont like it very well but the children need a change and Anna a rest. My watch stopped yesterday and I guess it is broken again and the little clock stopped, time around here seems to be going on a strike. Probally kicking on Standard Time. I went down town this evening and bought me a Ingersoll dollar watch. I am going to try that and see what it will do. I have spent so much fixing my other watch that I swore I wouldnt fix it again. Sunday May 28 Beautiful day. Well I went to work today, worked 101 Case for the 1st time, came home, peeled and cooked some potatoes, got dinner, ate it, washed the dishes then slept nearly all the afternoon. Made some pictures of Howards play things to send to him for a letter, wrote a letter to Anna and went to bed. I do not like being alone, the clock ticks too loud and my ears ring with the silence. I would rather they would ring with noise. Monday May 29 Heavy rain forenoon. Got dinner over on Woodward then got my hair cut. Tuesday May 30 Cool beautiful day. Best holiday I ever had in the mail service. Light mail A.M., caught the 11 oclock car for Northville, had a fine time and came home on the 8:30 car. Wednesday May 31 Cold but fine bright day. Expect Anna home this Eve. There is a letter up at the P.O. from a carrier in Los Angeles, Cal. who wants to trade with a Detroit Carrier. I would like to go but I dont seem to have the nerve to put up and go. |

June 1905 Thursday June 1 Fine day, except shower P.M. Mrs. Clarkson came in this Eve., we are talking California. Mr. Lewis called this Eve., he has been through Cal. and is a Sub. Carrier here in the P.O. and met Flo & Dave and the rest of them out there, so we talked California. Friday June 2 Fine day. Mrs. Clarkson sick, abed all day. Howard was standing looking out the window the other day and saw a man leading a horse that was not hitched to anything. He said, Oh Mama here is a horse whats "broken off". Saturday June 3 Very fine day. We have lived at 210 Avery just 4 years today. They are painting the house, not in our honor but because the house needed it. Mother Clarkson went home feeling better this A.M. Went down town this Eve. and bought a few things, got clock that had been repaired at Traubs. Sunday June 4 Fine day, warm. Laying around today. The papers say they are burying the 1st Govenor of Michigan down on Capitol Square this afternoon. His remains have been brought from N.Y. where they have been buried for years. Monday June 5 Very warm sultry day, rain in the evening. Tuesday June 6 Well it put in a night of raining last night for sure. The low places were flooded this A.M., got cool afternoon. Threatened rain all day but did not rain till evening. Wednesday June 7 Cold enough for a fire. Bought a new tire this A.M., paid $4.00 for a Hartford 77 E.H. Thursday June 8 Cold, fair. Took the baseburner down this evening and it is a terrible job, I dread it everytime. Anna does not feel well today and the baby seems to feel about as she does but he is a fine baby anyway. He is so good that he does not get written up very often in my diary. Friday June 9 Still cold. Well I am so lame and sore today I can hardly move, just as I always am after moving that pesky stove. Got a letter from Mother today, she is not at all well and seems discouraged. Saturday June 10 Warm, rain and rain, it seems as though it is raining all the time and the country is flooded. Sunday June 11 Warm fair day, for a wonder. A messenger boy brought a message last night about 12 from Dr. Armstrong, Los Angeles, Cal. They evidently have heard of that carrier that wants to trade and come to Det. and they want us to come there so bad that he telegraphed this message, "good position, Business district, cant afford to miss it." We took the baby to Church today and had him baptised by the Rev. W. J. Jaquess. About a doz. babies were baptised. Howard went with Mabel and was as good as could be. All of the babies were good but of course ours was the finest baby there, Every body said so. Monday June 12 Fair day except a little rain towards evening. Went over to see Geo. this evening. The second oil well proved a duster as they term a dry one. Too bad we can not get oil, I guess we are not to get rich that way. Tuesday June 13 Very warm. Mabel went to ride on the river this evening. Anna and the children went for a walk and I wrote a good long letter to Mother. Mother is sick and rather discouraged of getting well. She gets around and then has to set back and she seems to think she wont get well. Wednesday June 14 Very warm, went with my shirt waist today for the first time this season. The baby lays on the floor now but he is not as lively as Howard was at his age, baby is more sober and is larger, fatter, and not so strenuous but is better natured and easier to take care of. Thursday June 15 Very warm, hot, fine day. Friday June 16 Very warm, rained all night and till about 9 A.M., very close. Wrote to Herbert today. Saturday June 17 Very warm, as hot as we usually have it in the middle of the summer. Took Howard down town today noon to meet Mabel and she took him to Gummies house. He was crazy to go, dont seem to mind leaving his Mama and Papa at all, said he would come to Mamas house next Sunday. Sunday June 18 Hot, Hot, Hot, whew. Worked this morning and aim to take a collection this Eve. to pay a Carrier for working for me. The baby got to fighting with a paper today as he was laying on the floor and rolled over onto his stomache them made another effort and rolled over onto his back again, great feat for a 5 month old. Took collection out Woodward from the Boulevard to City Limits. Enjoyed seeing the country out there, but was pretty tired when I got home. Rode my wheel over the route left it at Geo. and went to the office and home on the car. Monday June 19 Hot, very Hot, everybody complaining. Whew fearful. When I went after my wheel at Geo today noon Anna gave me a basket of beautiful strawberries 4 or 5 quarts and Mabel brought a box from Northville so we had all of the strawberries we could stuff for once. Howard staid out to Gummies and it seems still and strange without him here. Tuesday June 20 Hot but not so bad, rain this evening and cool. Mrs. Parks our nurse for Howard, was married last night to a Missouri farmer, widower, with 5 children, by the name of Russell and her daughter is to be married tonight. Wednesday June 21 Cool today. A Los Angeles, Cal. Carrier called at the Station today by the name of Briggs or Driggs. Mildred Stringer married today, man by the [name of] Cate [from] Columbus, Ohio. James Tyre and Miss Wilson married today. Thursday June 22 Quite cool today. It seems rather funny around here without Howard and I guess he likes to stay out to Gummies so well that it will be hard getting him home. Friday June 23 Pleasant, cool. The painters finished the house today. Saturday June 24 Cool, fair, cloudy. Anna and the baby went to Northville this morning and I followed on the 5 P.M. car. Had a beautiful ride, the car was not crowded and it was cool and delightful. Went down to Gummies and ate supper, then went to see Mother. She is much better now and gets around and does most of the work. Sunday June 25 Warmer, breezy and threatening rain but did not rain till in the night. Having a quiet fine time at Northville today, filling up on peas, asparagus, and strawberries. Came home on the 8:30 car. Monday June 26 Fine day. Anna and the children came home on the 1 oclock car. Howard seemed glad to get home again and went immediately to work getting out all of his play things and get acquainted over again. Tuesday June 27 Fair but quite cool. Baby is rather fretty for a day or two, I guess he must be cutting teeth. Wednesday June 28 Cool, fair. The Church have its annual Sunday School excursion today, none of us went but nearly the whole neighborhood about here went. I rode down town today noon on my wheel, bought a brace and bit at the 10¢ store. Anna left the baby with Mrs. Burns and took Howard and went down town this afternoon, bought a few needed things and Mabel a birthday present. Thursday June 29 Some warmer, fine. Friday June 30 Beautiful day. Mabels birthday, 26 years. We intended going to Belle Isle this afternoon but I could not [get] off so we could not go. We had a birthday cake with candles on it at supper and Ice Cream for our celebration.

July 1905 Saturday July 1 Heavy shower this morning. It seems as tho the summer is gone before we are aware it is here. I hate to see it going so fast. Howard was looking at the baby and he said he looks just like Ben. Mama said "and who is Ben" and Howard said "He is my Papa". Sunday July 2 Warm, threatening. Went to Church this A.M. The pastor of the United Presbyterian Church preached a good sermon, the ministers exchanged pulpits. Went over and visited the Hardenburghs in the Eve., the Hopkins were there. Monday July 3 Warm, big rain afternoon, I got soaked and had to change ever dud I had on. The baby can roll over now and it wont be long before he will creep. I went over today and got some pictures of him that were taken a week ago, they were pretty good but not so good as some we got of Howard. Howard has learned to put his head down and keel over and he thinks he is a pretty big boy to do that.
Tuesday July 4 Well this is the glorious Fourth. Warm and threatening all day but not a drop of rain fell, a high cool wind made it a fine day. I worked this forenoon, fixed a place to carry the water away from the Ice box this P.M. Mabel went home so we were alone. Howard went to see the Putnam Ave. Parade with the Burns this A.M. And I took him to the fireworks up on Putnam in the Eve. They had some fine ones and an immense crowd was there to see them. After we came home Edna & Clarence brought Jay Devering [BLD's cousin, grandson of Luther Dean, son of Harriet Dean Devering] and wife up to call, I have not seen him for years. Wednesday July 5 Warm. Well the 4th is over and usual summing up of accidents is now in order and I guess there is no falling off in the number. Mabel came back tonight. Thursday July 6 Warm, rain at night. Took my shoes down to Geo.s to be tapped and heeled. Friday July 7 Warm, fine day. Took Howard and went to the Barber shop and got our hair cut. Anna and Mabel went to the Grace Hospital to see Inez Hart. I staid with the children. Howard mourned for his Mama till he went to sleep sitting on the steps with his head on my knee. Saturday July 8 Cool and threatening, rain evening. Went at noon and got my shoes. Anna & Mabel went down town this evening. Sunday July 9 Cool, rain afternoon. Worked. Howard went home with Mabel this morning to stay a week. We do not like it very well to have him gone but he likes to go and it is nice for him to run loose out there once in a while. Mabel is on her vacation. The baby was put into short clothes today for the first time. He does not say how he likes them but seems to roll and stretch and grunt on the floor with a little more freedom. Monday July 10 Cold, damp and horrid. Howard gone out to Gummies makes it seem so quiet around here. Tuesday July 11 Warm, close, Horrid, some rain. Cora Manning came today, she teaches school in New York City. Wednesday July 12 Hot, rain, close. Cora went to the Christian Scientist Church this Eve. It seems that she is thinking of joining that church. Thursday July 13 Warm, more rain. Friday July 14 More rain. Heavy shower about 1 P.M. it seems as tho it was raining most of the time, a shower will come up then afterwards the sun will come out and it looks as tho it would never rain again but just as you are thinking that another shower will come along. Kitchen was papered this afternoon. Saturday July 15 Fair, warm. Everybody went to Northville today. Anna, the baby and Cora went in the morning and I followed after work. Howard and Mabel have been out there all of the week. Sunday July 16 Very warm. At Northville, didnt do much but lay around and sweat. Howard and I went to see my folks in the A.M. Mother is still very miserable just able to crawl around and she looks as thin and bad as I ever saw her. All went up to call on Norine towards evening then I came home. Monday July 17 Very warm, 93°, but a fine breeze. I do not feel very well today. Anna, Cora and the children came home on the 8 oclock car well nigh done up with the heat. Tuesday July 18 93° Fearful Hot, up into the 90tys, so hot all night we could get no rest and but very little sleep. The papers are full of records of intense heat all over the East in the large cities they feel it the most. A great many deaths and more prostrations in New York especialy and a few here but Det. is not crowded enough to be very bad. Mabel and her Mother came in this Eve. to go on an excursion to Port Huron tomorrow. We had a perfect seance getting the children to sleep it is so hot. Wednesday July 19 An awful hot night last night, no one slept very well and everybody feels like a rung out rag this morning. The kids are cross and we are cross and all together we do not relieve the effect of the heat very much but of course we remain true to human nature. Gummie, Mabel and Cora started for Port Huron but made a mistake in the time that the boat started and was 1/2 hour too late, they spent most of the day on Belle Isle then came home. It got cooler towards night and made life a little more bearable. Thursday July 20 Cooler, just a delightful night last night for sleep and everybody made up for lost time. Gummie, Mabel and Cora went to Port Huron today. Friday July 21 Very cool but seems good. Anna and Gummie went down town in the forenoon and they all, Gummie, Mabel, Cora, and Anna went over on Grand River to the penny picture gallery and got their picture taken in the afternoon. Gummie went home in the evening.
Saturday July 22 Delightful cool day. Went down town in the evening and [bought] a 3 wheel velocipede for Howard at T. B. Rayls, $3.00. Howard has been teasing for one and I suppose all small boys must have a velocipede or they would not grow. Sunday July 23 Perfectly lovely day. Worked A.M. Cora and Mabel went to Church. In the afternoon we all went to the Water Works Park and it is a beautiful spot. We came home in the early Eve. and had just got home when someone knocked and there was Herbert, May and Dorothy. I was very much surprised as I did not know they were in Michigan. Sam, Belle & Maggie, and Edna & Clarence, Geo. and his wife and boy came later and we had quite a reunion for the evening. May and Dorothy are to stay in Mich. for a while but Herbert goes tomorrow to W. Virginia to attend the Fishery Convention so we will not see him again till next year probably. Monday July 24 Another beautiful day. Cora went to Northville this eve. Howards velociped came today noon and he immediately began to grin and jump, "heres my bicycle" he said. At first he could not even get onto it then when he could get on he could not make it go but gradually he got so he could make it go a little way, then he would jump off and say "Howard rided a long ways that time". When I came home at night he could go pretty well from the parlor through to the kitchen and back again over and over, no time to eat or anything and when his Mama just took him at night an put him to bed he was yelling at the top of his voice for this "ittle bit bicycle" and he was up and at it again the next morning bright and early. Tuesday July 25 Beautiful day. Howard still riding, and the troubles he has had I would think he would be black and blue from head to foot. He cries a little then is up and at it again. Wednesday July 26 Beautiful cool day. Baby is more restless than usual for a day or two, probably his teeth are starting. He does not creep yet but manages to get things sometimes by rolling. Thursday July 27 Warm, Fair. Friday July 28 Warm heavy shower P.M. Baby is very restless and hard to take care of which makes it very hard for Anna. Saturday July 29 Warm, close and disagreeable. Shower every little while, horrid. A horrible murder was committed last evening about 6:15 P.M. just as it was getting dusk. Unknown persons entered the pawn shop of J. Moyers at 42 Monroe Ave., killing him and looting the store of "it is claimed" $10,000 in money, diamonds and valuables and then they escaped leaving no clue altho at the time hundreds of people were passing the store. Sunday July 30 Cloudy and rainy. Staid at home all day. Anna, the children and I were alone and the children were good all day so we had a quiet peaceful and restful day. Monday July 31 Cool and fine.

August 1905 Tuesday August 1 Rather cool for the 1st of Aug., rather chilly at night. Mabel and Mrs. Yarnell went to tent Church. Wednesday August 2 Cool but fine weather to work. Cora came from Northville today. Thursday August 3 Cool, cloudy. Cora off for Bay City this morning to visit a step sister for 2 or 3 weeks. Friday August 4 Rain and rain, just a down pour all the forenoon. Saturday August 5 Another big shower this A.M. Mother and Father came to Edna's this P.M. The papers say a couple of man have been arrested in Cleveland for the murder of Joe Moyer, they had some of the stuff stolen on them. I hope they will prove the right men, the whole country have been looking for them. Sunday August 6 Warm and a beautiful day. Worked A.M. Howard and I went down to Dr. Bells office to get him to come up to see Mother at Ednas, then we came back there and staid till after supper, then Clarence walked home with us. We found Anna and baby over at Hardenburgs. Roy has put on long pants. The Dr. thinks Mother ought to go to the hospital to determine just what the matter is. She may have to have an operation. Mr. Belleville called but I was away. Monday August 7 Warm and pleasant. Went down to Ednas this Eve., Anna, Howard and I. Lydia was there and Will Perkins and family called. Mother expects to go to the Harper Hospital tomorrow. Tuesday August 8 Warm and pleasant. Mother went to the Hospital today. Will Perkins and wife took her in their carriage. I guess Mother dreads to go, most people do, especially if they do not know anything about hospitals they think that they are a last and only resort. But I think they are the only place to go with sickness. Wednesday August 9 Very warm. Anna and I went down to see Dr. John N. Bell this Eve. to see about Mother. He expects to perform an operation tomorrow, enough anyway to fully determine just what the matter is. He can not come to a definite conclusion without. He does not think it is gall stones. I think from his talk that he expects to find cancer of the kidney, if so he says it will probally be no use to try and remove it. But he says it may be that and it may be a tumor or it may be gall stones. The nature and location makes it impossible to tell what it is. Thursday August 10 Very warm and close. Dr. Belle operated on Mother this morning and found the trouble to be gall stones after all. He removed several, one an immense one about 3 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. Mother came out of it all right and is getting along very well. The chloroform made her sick but if nothing happens she will get along all right. Mabel has gone to the Island tonight with Inez Hart. Friday August 11 Awful hot today, just fearful. Went over to see Mother at Harper Hospital. She was getting along alright but of course is weak and uncomfortable and suffers from the heat. Saturday August 12 Fearful hot, hard to bear. Mother improving. Mabel went to Palmer Park this P.M. [with] the Harts and Frys. Howard is not very well today does not want to play or eat or anything but lays around on the floor and sleeps, sick to his stomach and bowels. Sunday August 13 Warm but some cooler. Made Ice Cream this A.M. Anna and I went to the Hospital P.M. to see Mother. She is gaining and rests better today because it is cooler. Mabel staid over this Sunday. Monday August 14 Cooler, heavy rain all the afternoon and away along into the night. Tuesday August 15 Quite cool, cloudy. More rain P.M. Wednesday August 16 Cool. Went over to the Hospital this evening. Mother getting along fine. Took car down town then up Trumbull, they were having a parade of some fool society dressed in Turkish costumes. Thursday August 17 Cool, fine day. Baby was 7 months old yesterday but he does not creep yet. He rolls all over the floor but I guess he does not know where he is going, he rolls without a purpose. If he sees anything he wants to get he will stand on his hands and knees and just tremble and shake all over with eagerness, then he will drop down on his stomach and swim with his arms and legs but he neither goes forward or backwards. Howard at 7 months could creep and stand up to chairs and things but we are just as well satisfied that the baby does not creep, because they are less trouble and care when they stay where they are put. Friday August 18 Cool and fine. Anna not very well today, seems pretty sick, could not eat supper. Saturday August 19 Rained and rained nearly all day. Anna not much better today. Sunday August 20 Cool beautiful day. Worked. Father here to dinner. Mrs. Slater the nurse called this P.M. and stayed to tea. Then Anna, the children and I went over to the Hospital to see Mother, she is getting on fine. Monday August 21 Warm and threatening. Tuesday August 22 Very hot. The baby began to creep today, he began just the same way Howard did, by hunching along on his stomache. He wanted to get my foot and I drew it slowly away and he just followed after it. I suppose there will be doings in camp now, we are sorry to have him begin to creep because he will be so much more care. Went to the Hospital to call on Mother a few minutes after work. Wednesday August 23 Very hot today. Father here to dinner. Thursday August 24 Rain & Cooler. Friday August 25 Cooler, fine day. Cora Manning came from Bay City this afternoon, she intends starting back East tomorrow. Gummie was coming in but wrote that she was sick and unable to come. Went to the Hospital after work, Mother improving. She is back in the ward now. Expenses were high in the private room and she thought she would be just as well off in the ward now. Saturday August 26 Beautiful day. Cora left this afternoon for Utica, N.Y. Anna took Howard down town and bought him some shoes and also a pair of white slippers for baby. Mabel went out to Clawson this P.M. to stay over Sunday and took Howard with her. Sunday August 27 Fine day. No work today. Albert Johnson [May Johnson Dean's brother] came here today and staid to dinner. Went to the Hospital afternoon then went to call on May at Mrs. Rockwells. Came home and found Mabel and Howard sitting on the steps waiting for us. Monday August 28 Fine day. Tuesday August 29 Very warm. Buchanan and boy, McLeod and I went to Island to bathe this Eve. after work. McLeod and I came back down town on the boat and got our supper, walked around awhile then took car home. Wednesday August 30 Very warm. Baby fell out of bed this morning. Do not feel very well today after my bust yesterday, McLeod says he was sick all night. Thursday August 31 Cooler, beautiful. Anna went down town and ordered some new white Haviland dishes and a new Iron Bed. Went to the Hospital to see Mother. May and Dorothy started home this morning. Mabel went to the Opera Isle of Spice. |

September 1905 Friday September 1 Cool, threatening. Dishes came today. Bed and springs came. Father broke a window getting the springs up through and had to put in a new glass. I went down to the New England Life Insurance office and paid my premium, $56.25. Saturday September 2 Cool, some rain. Parker Weakley and Johnson Sherman were convicted of the Moyer murder and I suppose they started for Marquette, Mich. today on the Steamer Japan to serve out a life sentence. Sunday September 3 Quite cool, threatening. Worked today, big mail. Howard and I went to the Hospital P.M., Mother is awfully tired of the Hospital care and Hospital fare and thinks she will come home as soon as the Dr. will let her. Howard and [I] went down Woodward and up Trumbul home. I bought Howard a box of candy, the box was made like a telephone and he wanted it so he could telephone to Gummies. Monday September 4 Very cool, some rain. Well this is Labor day and I labored good and hard in the forenoon. And it is our 10 Wedding anniversary, we did not have any doings. We had chicken and a few extras for dinner. I helped Anna clean up the little bedroom and set up Howards new bed. Gummie and Mabel appeared upstairs before we knew they were in the house and at supper time they ordered Anna and I upstairs they would get the supper and when it was ready we were called. The room was lit up with little candles and the table was loaded with good things and a beautiful center bouquet and a cake with candles on it and it all looked very pretty and was a great surprise to us. They had smuggled the things in while we were upstairs. I gave Anna 4 hand painted plates, we felt as tho we had a Christmas. Tuesday September 5 Cold, like late fall. Cloudy, threatening, some rain. Annas 32nd birthday today but we had our time and presents yesterday. Gummie here. Wednesday September 6 Fine day. Gummie went home. Mother was taken to Ednas today, she is pretty weak and used up. Aunt Vina is there to take care of her. Thursday September 7 Warmer, fine day. Baby has a tooth and the way he slides around the house on his stomach is a caution. Went down to Ednas this Eve., Mother looks terrible, she is awfully weak and poor. Friday September 8 Beautiful day. A. H. Howie of 116 Balt. W. was killed yesterday. Peace has been declared between Russia and Japan, but everybody is terribly disappointed in the terms that Japan excepted. And the papers say that the people of Japan are so incensed that they are mobbing the officials that are responsible. Some people think that Roosevelt thought only of his own glory and induced them to settle on any terms so he could have the credit of settling it. Saturday September 9 Beautiful day. Went down town this evening and bought me a cheap pair of Tan shoes, $2.38, thought I would see how they would stand. Bought a rubber collar, suspenders, came home early, went to bed tired out. Sunday September 10 Cloudy, threatening and a little rain. Howard and I went down to Ednas to see Mother, she seems a little better but very weak. Monday September 11 Rained all night but cleared into a beautiful day. The State Fair opens today on its new grounds out Woodward. Tuesday September 12 [no entry] Wednesday September 13 Fine day, cool. Went out to the Fair after work. Pretty good fair I guess but it seems as tho it was all a farmers show and not much to interest City people. It was so cold that I did not stay long, did not see the fireworks. Thursday September 14 Fair, not quite so cold. Went down to see Mother this Eve. she seemed a little better. Friday September 15 Warmer, terrific rain about 2 P.M. but it did not rain a drop on the Fair grounds that was nice. I went out again this Eve. with Frank Buchanan in hopes I would see the Air Ship go up but we were too late, it had gone up but got back before we got there. I was disappointed because I wanted to see it, came home early. Baby has got his second tooth. Saturday September 16 Warm but a little rain. Last day of the Fair, it has been a splendid week for it. The oven door on the gas stove broke the other day and Father got the castings and fixed it today. Sunday September 17 Rain, it never let up a minute all day till evening, it just waited for the Fair to get through then made up for lost time. Worked. Laid around all the afternoon, did not even go down to Mothers and I know I ought. Monday September 18 Warm, hot and close, awful. Baby cross and fretful probally teeth or weather, kept us up till about 11 P.M. Tuesday September 19 Very warm, cooler by night. Went down to see Mother this evening. Wednesday September 20 Cool, most delightful day. Anna and children walked down to Mothers this afternoon. Mother is slowly improving. Mary McGee was there. Thursday September 21 Another fine day. I suppose Bert Hart will be married this Eve. [to Clara Louise Crooks] Do not feel very well today and the baby does not either, he is rather fretful. Friday September 22 Fine day, cool. Howard got a cold so have I got a cold. Saturday September 23 Fine cool day. Everybody went to Northville today. Anna, Mabel and children on the 10 oclock and I on the 6 car. The cars were terribly crowded on account of the Redford fair. Sunday September 24 Fine cool day. At Northville. Howard and I have bad colds but we enjoy our visit just the same. We all came home on the 6 oclock car and I guess Howard cought more cold. Monday September 25 Fine but quite cool. Howards cold bad, barked like a dog last night and the baby has a cold today and Anna had an interesting time of it today. My cold is better. Tuesday September 26 Fine cool day. Went down to Mothers today. She is getting along just about the same. She said that the Dr. said his bill would be about $150. I thought it would be about 1/2 that and I am pretty well discouraged in consequence. Wednesday September 27 Fine, very warm day. Nothing doing today to speak of, we are all getting better of our [colds]. Howards nose was red and sore with his cold and he told his Mama his nose was rusty. Thursday September 28 Hot today, above 80° in shade. Ordered 4 tons of coal today, they say it is going to advance 50¢ a ton Monday. Friday September 29 Fine day. Saturday September 30 Beautiful day. |

October 1905 Sunday October 1 Warm but threatening, some rain. Worked, heavy mail. Went down to Mothers in the evening, she seemed better, had taken a few steps on her feet and was a little more encouraged. Monday October 2 Rain this morning but turned out a beautiful day. A load of wood came today from Farrand Organ Co. We got our coal, paid for two but if it keeps this weather all winter we will not need it. Worked this evening to get the celar cleaned out but it is more than one Eve. job. Mabel gone to the Opera. Tuesday October 3 Beautiful day. The baby gets up and stands at things now and the bumps he gets are a caution but he still creeps by pulling himself along on his stomach. Anna paid for her new aluminum coffee pot today. Wednesday October 4 Beautiful day. Perfectly remarkable weather, here I am still working in my shirtwaist, it is chilly mornings and evenings so a little fire feels good but the middle of the day is actually hot. Thursday October 5 Beautiful day. Friday October 6 Still beautiful. Saturday October 7 Weather perfectly beautiful. Downtown evening, made a few small purchases and came home. Sunday October 8 The weather is most remarkable for this time of the year, we have the windows and doors open and it seems just like mid summer. I took care of the kids and Anna went to Church this morning, we never can go together anymore and that is rather unpleasant, one of the sacrifices of bringing up children. We took the kids and walked down to see Mother P.M., she is doing fine now and sits up nearly all day and gets around a little. Monday October 9 Beautiful day, just like summer. Tuesday October 10 Cooler, turning cold, threatening. Wednesday October 11 Quite cold, wore overcoat Eve., some cold rain. Dr. J. N. Bell left Mother today to her fate saying he thought she would get along all right. It has been 9 or 10 weeks now since the operation. She is able to get up and dress and be on her feet a little. Dr. Bells bill is $150.00 and I think it is pretty high and told him so, but he thought it was small considering knowledge, skill and a lot more truck that never could be worth that much as I can see. He would not throw off a cent even for cash. I was down at his home this evening to see him about it. I am disappointed in him as well as the bill because I thought he was a more lenient man than that. I think it best to find out before hand about the price, then is the time to argue because after it is done they wont argue. Thursday October 12 So cold today I wore my winter coat and gloves. We keep a fire in the kitchen and have to keep the parlor door shut because the News boy threw the paper through the front window yesterday and it has not been fixed yet. Anna cleaned the parlor today. Friday October 13 They put the window in today. Saturday October 14 Cool, threatening. Mabel went home. Anna and I took the kids and went down town after supper and bought a rug and Howard a coat and a pair of shoes. We went to Elliots and got everything then came home without any serious mishap, but it is no fun to go that way. Sunday October 15 Some rain. Worked. Al Whitehead called when I was at work and wanted me to go up and see his brothers place as he wanted to sell it. I went up to see it in the P.M. but dont see how I could manage $3,000, place it is as 327 Avery. Monday October 16 Fine day. We took up the sitting room carpet today and began cleaning but just at dinner time Gummie, Norine & Baby arrived, that put an end to the cleaning. Went down to see Mother after supper, she is still improving. Sam & Belle were there and we came home together. The new 5 Carriers for Sta. A went to work today, they took all firms off of my route. Tuesday October 17 Fine day. Gummie, Norine & Baby [Clarkson Merritt], went home today. Wednesday October 18 Rain nearly all day. Baby Bennett cut his finger quite badly today on the buffet door knob. Thursday October 19 Fearful day, cold rain or mist all day. Put up coal stove this evening after tacking down the rug in the sitting room, big job. Friday October 20 Cold, very high wind. Halloween but there does not seem to be as much going on around here as usual. Some noise and beans rattling against the glass and that is about all. Howard had a little jack o lantern and was all excited over what was going to happen, was soon so sleepy that he teased to go to bed. Had a Mrs. Sherman to work cleaning this forenoon. |

The day looked as tho something terrible was going to happen any minute. Mabel heard today that her Father was not as bad as reported and would get along all right. Mabel staid with Inez tonight. Saturday November 25 Well who would think the state of the weather could change so. The morning the wind was gone the sun was out and it is a fine day. Sunday November 26 Threatening but really a beautiful day. Anna, the children and I got ready and went to Northville, and then Father and Mother went down to Plymouth to Uncle Asa's. December 1905 Friday December 1 Cold, some warmer than yesterday, threatening, about 25° above this A.M. Anna some better but not very well yet. The baby has a bad spell every night now, he cries and keeps us tending him usually till 10 or 11 oclock. He takes Howards little rocking chair and pushes it ahead of him and walks all around the room with it. Saturday December 2 Well this is one of those days that the fewer we have of them the better we like it. It snowed about 3 inches last night then turned to rain and we have just simply paddled around in slush all day. Mabel gone to Northville. Sunday December 3 Colder, slush of yesterday froze solid, cloudy, threatening. Worked today for being off last Sunday, staid in all the afternoon. Anna not very well and I guess the baby has caught it, he is awful nights does not stay asleep long at a time but wakes up and cries. He has to be patted on the back nearly all night. Mabel came back. Monday December 4 Cold, cloudy, threatening, snow tonight. Tuesday December 5 Cold, raw, gray and threatening. Bought a couple of bushels of apples of Jim Joy today, $1.00. Anna went down town at noon, she bought Howard some shirts and over shoe rubbers, the baby a pair of shoes. Shoes does not last the baby long he wears them through the toes creeping. We are not intending doing anything much for Christmas. Howard says he wants a sled, automobile, handerchiefs and candy cane and he sticks to it and says the same thing every time we ask him so I guess that is what he will get. Wednesday December 6 Fine day, warmer. Nothing doing today. Put a shelf in the kitchen across the side window for flowers. Mabel got a letter from Gummie in Los Angeles, Cal. describing Floras wedding Thanksgiving day. Thursday December 7 Beautiful day. Went down town today noon to buy the children some Christmas. Got Howard a sled and fire patrol automobile, baby a couple of rubber toys. When I took the car to come back to Sta. A I tried to get onto a moving car and it was going faster than I thought and it threw me sky high and nearly pulled my right arm out of its socket. I picked myself up off of the street, gathered up my bundles and took the next car thinking I was not hurt but by the time I got to Sta. A I was in great pain in my shoulder. I did not go to work but went over to the Grace Hospital and had my shoulder examined, they found no bones broken but a bad sprain. They bound it up in arnica and I came home feeling thankful it was no worse but discouraged because I do not want to lose the work and also feeling a little Hoodoed because it was just a year ago this week that I had my lip operated on and I feel chagrined to think I tried so foolish a trick. Friday December 8 Beautiful day. I am not working today but nursing my shoulder. Took a walk with Howard over on Grand River this P.M. My shoulder pains me pretty bad tonight. Saturday December 9 Beautiful warm weather but threatening rain with a little rain late in the evening. Shoulder pretty bad today, did not work. Anna went down town this afternoon and left me with both children. I got along fine, I went and got shaved in the evening. Sunday December 10 Fine day. Got up and went over to the Sta. to see what I could do. I managed to set up my own Mail. I cannot use my right arm but a little, if I raise it too far or out too far I get a twinge that almost makes me yell. My shoulder does not hurt much if I keep it perfectly still. I have difficulty in dressing, cannot put on my coat alone but I suppose I will have to stand it for sometime. Mabel here today. Aunt Dill and Inez Hart here to dinner today. Anna and Mabel went to Church this evening. Monday December 11 Beautiful day, warm enough in the middle of the day to go without wraps. Well I went to work today but I suffered tortures with my shoulder. I could not reach up to put mail in a box or rap on the door without getting a twinge that nearly dropped me. I was might glad to get home. I rub it night and morning with arnica, alcohol or hot witch hazel. I have to lay flat on my back to sleep and by morning I can hardly tell which aches the most, my back or my shoulder. Tuesday December 12 Still warm and delightful. My shoulder is no better as I can see, am afraid I cannot keep at work. Howard quite sick today, a little fever and throat sore a little, he just sits or lays around listless and quiet. Mrs. Walker called this Eve. Wednesday December 13 Warm and fine. My shoulder actually seems a little better today but I could stand more improvement. Howard better. Went and got a Hair cut and shave this evening, cannot shave myself. Thursday December 14 Colder, raw wind. Baby Bennett is getting so he seems to know things we say. He says "by by" but of course he does not always say it when we want him to. Then he will pick up things and hand them to you and say "dar" and in many ways he is cute and knowy. Anna feeds him a little at the table now, she tried him on Malted Milk but that did not agree with him, seems to give him colic and he was simply awful with it nights. He is not so bad since she quit it but has a night now and then that makes life worth living. Friday December 15 Cold raw wind, very disagreeable. My shoulder is a little worse today, I bought a plaster today and will try that. Howard has a little sore throat yet but has not got to be anything serious yet but of course we are worried about it. Got a letter from Herbert today. Mabel has gone out this Eve. Saturday December 16 Cloudy but not very cold. Howards throat better. My shoulder aches fearfully and I do so dread the next week Christmas work. Mabel gone to Northville. Sunday December 17 Foggy, cold, everything out doors covered with white feathery frost. I supposed I would have to work but my alternate with Sunday work did not want me to pay him back for working for me last Sunday till after the holidays. I am very grateful for that as my shoulder seems much better for the rest. Monday December 18 Misty, almost rain, warm. Got shave, cannot shave myself. Got back tire vulcanized, 50¢. Anna and I went down town this evening, bought candy and nuts, not such and awful crowd. Tuesday December 19 Warm, very threatening. I do hope the snow [will] hold off till after Christmas. Wednesday December 20 Brighter today, still warm. Thursday December 21 Fearful day, rained all night last night and nearly all day today. Not much Christmas stuff coming in the mail yet but the Ladies Home Journals came today and with the rain and carrying an umbrella made it very hard. Friday December 22 No rain today and not very cold. More Christmas stuff today but the work was not so hard as yesterday. I took my lunch today but I did not need to. I went down town at noon and bought Anna a present. My shoulder pains me considerably at night, I suppose because I have to use it so hard. Saturday December 23 Cloudy, not very cold. Work pretty hard but not as hard as I expected it would be. Howard told his Mama that a Cookie Man she made for him was a funny looking specimen. He is counting the days till Xmas and is very anxious. Mabel went to Northville tonight. Sunday December 24 Beautiful day, almost warm enough to go without wraps. Went to work at 8:30 this [A.M.] and they closed at 1:30 P.M. The mail was immense but I didnt have to hustle much to get mine up. Howard is all excited today, only one more night and it will be Christmas. Mabel came back tonight. Monday December 25 Cloudy but a fine day, not very cold. Enough snow came last night to make it look a little more Christmasy but the weather is not much like it usually is. Well I got up at 4:30 A.M. and got fires going, built one in the grate and Howard was next on the scene. He made for the grate with his nighty on and he says "land sakes, land sakes, theres my sled and ownbile and everything". He asked his Mama how Santa Claus knew just what he wanted, he just appreciated everything and would not say which he liked the best but I think he liked the sled best. Soon everybody was down looking into their stockings and undoing packages and having just the best of a time. The baby just sat himself in the midst of things and looked in silent amazement at every thing, he did not take to any one thing but enjoyed everybodys and every thing. He was as good as gold and as cute as he could be all day. We all got more than we expected, so many presents came in the mail we felt that we got more than we deserved as we had not given scarcely any ourselves. Howard got a sled, Fire Patrol Auto, Candy & Nuts and a box of handerchiefs from home, a couple of music boxes, doll and several books from other sources. Baby got a couple of rubber toys, candy, Etc and doll and a few things. All together it was a happy Christmas. I had to go to work and put in the hardest day I ever did in the Post Office. It took me 7.45 hours to clean up and that is longer than it usually takes on any other day and it was supposed to be a 1/2 holiday. I got home about 2 P.M. and had a fine dinner. Aunt Dill called. Edna called. Tuesday December 26 Weather simply beautiful. I am miserable with a cold today, I expect I have tended my nose more than 4,000 times. A few pkgs. today but it is remarkable how the mail drops off after Christmas. Wednesday December 27 Still beautiful. Very bad cold. Thursday December 28 Fine day, but began to rain in the evening. D. Robertson who lives in my district had his leg taken off this morning by the cars at Greenwood and the R.R. He attempted to get onto the train to ride to his work at the M. C. Depot but he slipped or some how was thrown under the wheels. It was just as they slow over the new cut there. I saw him as he lay beside the track just after it happened. The ambulance took him to the Grace Hospital. Friday December 29 Horrible day, rained all last night, stopped this forenoon but snowed a wet nasty snow all the afternoon which melted as fast as it fell, it quit in the evening and a high wind came up and how it did blow. My cold is better, my shoulder still hurts and bothers me awfully. Saturday December 30 Not a bad day, colder. Side walks icy, mud froze, the wind blew a hurricane all last night and nearly all day. Mabel gone to Northville. Sunday December 31 Fine day, not very cold. Went to work at 9:30, a heavy mail but it was mostly circulars, the rest of the day was spent quietly at home. We discovered a lump swelling on Howards neck just below and back of the left ear today and we feel worried about it altho it may be nothing it seems peculiar, it does not bother him any. I guess he must have got it by taking cold out doors yesterday he was out some time playing with his sled with Roy and Elmer and others, when we got him in he cried with cold feet. The baby has been fine for a few days and he is as cute as can be. He takes hold of Howards chair and just flys across the room and then looks up at you as much as to say "I am just doing things". He can ask for a drink and thing to eat at the table and make himself under stood in many ways. His first at imitating was to blow, he saw us blow out the candle so every light he saw big or little he would blow at it, you blow he would blow too. W. H. Hatcher of 12 & Boulevard in my route was killed last night at 14 & R.R. Train ran into a St. Car knocking the rear platform off. He was the only one hurt and it was believed no one was hurt at the time but working men found his body 1 hour after the accident. And thus the old year draws to a close. The weather this month has been more like Oct. than Dec. and it does not seem possible that it is the last day of 1905. I think there has been two days that I covered my ears up, one of them it was 14° above zero. We have had 2 or 3 very disagreeable days but on the whole it has been a very remarkable December. |
