[Editor's note: I know of no book for 1917. The following is from the end of the 1916 journal. There are 35 blank pages remaining after the January 5th entry. Either Bennett stopped updating his journal after January 6 or he bought a new book and copied January 1-5 into it and that book has subsequently been lost or destroyed.]

January 1917

Monday January 1     Made one trip, got home about 2 P.M. Fair day, not very cold, about freezing. We heard the whistles blow and the bells ring last night at 12 midnight. There is always an awful din on every New years Eve.

Tuesday January 2     Nice day, bright and warm. Anna and Bennett went down town to get Bennett a new pair of pants and other things needed.

Wednesday January 3     Misty and wet and horrid morning.

Thursday January 4     Fine forenoon but the afternoon was threatening but warm about 40°. Howard & Bennett to a sunday school party or banquet.

Friday January 5     When I woke up this morning it was raining and storming and I did not get up. I thought I would stay home and take one of my compensatory days for Christmas and New Years. For any Holiday or Sunday we work we get a day some other day so I thought I would take one of my days and it has stormed all day long. I guess I made a good choice.
