EpilogueAfter Bennett's final entry of June 2, 1921: July 26, 1921 Bennett Luther Dean's mother died. Her obituary from an unknown paper reads: "DEATH OF MRS. LYDIA DEAN - Mrs. Lydia Dean, aged 84 years, widow of the late William Day Dean, passed away at the home of Mrs. Asa Joy on Church street, last Tuesday evening. The deceased was born in New York state, March 23, 1837, and departed this life, Tuesday, July 25, 1921. She is survived by four sons and one daughter, Herbert D., of Montana; Ernest A.,of South Lyon: George B., Bennett . and Mrs. C. J. Mason of Detroit. Her husband departed this life several years ago. Mrs. Dean had made her home with Mrs. Joy for the past six years, and although she had been in failing health for some time, she has been able to get about the house until only a few days previous to her death. The funeral services were held from her late residence, Thursday after noon. Rev. S. Conger Hathaway, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, of which the deceased had been a member for many years, conducted the services. Interment in the Baptist cemetery in north village." Bennett Joy Dean graduated from Detroit Northwestern High School in 1922. He moved to California February 1924, Worked for Pacific South West Bank in Los Angeles from Mar. 1924 to Feb. 1926, began work for Southern California Edison July 1926. On November 7th, 1926 Bennett was married to Lillian Mills [daughter of George. L. MILLS & Effie May BERRY] in Glendale, Los Angeles Co., CA. April 13, 1927 Lillian Mills Dean recorded in her diary, "Ben rec'd a letter from Gram. Ben's father had a fall & is quite bad". Bennett L. Dean & Family living at 6115 Hecla Ave., Detroit December 27, 1927 Letter from George to Herbert: "...Last week I was over to see Ben, Ernie had just been there and gone. Edna and Clarence came up while I was there and we had a nice visit. I can not see that Ben changes very much, just about the same. When I came in, his face brightened up and he knew who I was but he soon lost it again...." January 6, 1928 Bennett L. Dean was admitted to Pontiac State Hospital where he died on January 16, 1928, he was 59 years old. His death certificate lists the cause of death as Myocardial failure, duration 77 months [e.g. since Oct 1920]. Also contributing to his condition was mental depression. He was buried in Plymouth on January 19th. February 26, 1928 Letter from Edna to Herbert: "...Howard had been promised a job with the Edison people of California if he would come out and be there not later than the 1st of April, so Anna and Howard are talking of driving out but Anna doesn't know what to do with Louise and June. She had about decided to take June with her and leave Louise here but I told her I didn't think she ought to take June and leave Louise because June would be company for Louise. You know that Laurence is to be married on the 6th of March and he and his wife are to keep house for the two girls, that was the first arrangement, but I am afraid that Laurence and Viola will go out and leave the girls alone and that is why I think Anna ought to leave them both or take both. Anna is working hard and cleaning the house, doing some papering and painting getting ready for the bride. The bride intends to work for a while, thirty years or so like I did. Anna has not been very well since Ben passed away, she goes all to pieces, stomach, head and nerves." March 6, 1928 Laurence married in Detroit to Viola Sweitzer [daughter of Arthur and Eva Sweitzer]. March 1928 A couple of weeks after Laurence's wedding, Anna and Howard boarded a train for California. June & Louise remained with Laurence and Viola for a while and then when out to California after Anna was settled. c.1932 June graduated from Alhambra High School in California. November 14, 1943 Howard was married to Dorothea Editha Chamberlin. September 4th 1945 Louise married David Hartt Terry; David died in 1980. Louise married 'Rick' Fredericksen March 3rd 1984. Jan 14, 1946 Eveline Manning Nash Clarkson died at Pasadena, Los Angeles Co., CA, she was aged 91. An obituary from an unknown newspaper reads, "Mrs. E. M. Clarkson services tomorrow-Funeral services for Mrs. Eveline M. Clarkson, 312 Vista Avenue, will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Reynolds & Eberle, 825 East Orange Grove Avenue. Her death occurred Jan. 14. A native of Michigan, Mrs. Clarkson had spent many years in California prior to coming to Pasadena 25 years ago. She is survived by three daughters and one son, Anna L. Dean and David E. Clarkson, of Alhambra; Norine Clarkson Merritt of South Pasadena and Flora H. Crosher, Pasadena; also 12 grand-children and 18 great-grandchildren." October 1st, 1949 June married Clarence Albert McCoy, they had no children. June worked as a phonographic Court Recorder in the Orange Co. Superior Court, from which she retired in 1976. December 8, 1954 Anna Louise Clarkson Dean died at Orange, Orange Co., California, she was 81 years old. Laurence became an Engineer for Michigan Bell Telephone Company. He and his wife Viola remained in Michigan and had 4 children. Laurence Clare Dean died September 1977 at Silver Lake, Green Oaks Twp., Michigan, he was 70 years old. Howard and his wife had one daughter and stayed in Southern California. Howard Clarkson Dean died June 14th, 1983 at Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, he was 81 years old. Bennett and his wife Lillian remained in Southern California where they raised 3 children. Bennett Joy Dean died February 25th, 1993 in Irvine, Orange County, CA, he was 88 years old. |
