This award is given by the Music industry to a British artist for the best contemporary album of the year. It is regarded as one of the most important awards in the British Music Industry. Previous winners have included more commercial performers, such as Pulp, Primal Scream and M People, but also unearthed hidden talents such as PJ Harvey, Portishead and most recently Antony and the Johnsons. Many talents have emerged based purely on featuring in the shortlist for this award, which is released 2 months before the winner is announced. Acts such as Radiohead, Coldplay, Oasis, U2, Stereo MCs, Paul Weller, The Prodigy, Supergrass, Leftfield, Underworld, Manic Street Preachers, Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Massive Attack, Faithless, Blur and The Streets have all profited from the Mercury's high regard in the Music industry.
