Please feel free to forward this newsletter to other alumni

by Bonnie Burke Hulse '65 HULSEBE@barstow.usmc.mil.

IN THIS ISSUE:

As you see the newsletter has a new look. Please feel free to send me your comments and suggestions. Bev's done an excellent job as usual.  I don't know what I'd do without her!!

The letter has a new, improved format. The intention, besides making it more aesthetic and easier on the eyes, is to have Willy the Wildcat looking at you from the left, a light blue background to the text, and clickable links to and from each of the sections of the newsletter. I mention what may be the obvious to some of you because in this less than perfect and very complicated world of internet, I know there are those whose email programs don't show the Willy graphic, and others that don't allow the internal links. If you're lucky the whole package will work as intended. If you're a little less lucky you'll still have a newsletter that is friendlier on the eyes than it was before. If you don't see Willy and you can't click the links let me know what email program you are using (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, LingoMail, etc.), and whether you are using a free, web-based mail server (Yahoo, Hotmail, Excite, etc.). I promise only to pass this info on to Bev Shulster, and she promises AT LEAST scratch her head and sympathize, while trying to come up with some brilliant solution.

The Class of '67
Last Saturday night was the '67 class reunion at the Lake Merritt Hotel (Clarion), 1800 Madison Street, Oakland, from 6 pm to Midnight.  Judy K. Sue writes they had about 100 people attend.  We're looking for photos of the evening.  Greg Miles hosted a small catered affair the next day at him home for those who could attend.  Besides good food, there was lots of fun and dancing. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening.  If you have pictures, send them in so we can all enjoy them.

Also, if any of you attended the Music Music Music for the Wildcats Alumni Association, send us a report on the event so we can all share in it.

1964 OHS Yearbook!
 I've gotten within 10 pages of completing the scanning to CD of the 1964 yearbook.   It includes the cover, inside covers, and all the pages.  It is from my yearbook, and contains all the writing ("Have a great summer", etc).  I tried eliminating it, but it was too time consuming.  All I did was Scan, Crop, and File.  It is not fancy, but it will be in its entirety.  If you are interested and want one,  it will be $10 to cover costs for the CD's and shipping. It can be viewed on CD or printed out.   If you print it out, I suggest using heavier paper to print double sided, as the pictures bleed through on thinner paper.  Contact me at hulsebe@barstow.usmd.mil .  I hope to also be able to have a CD that has the Senior Class Pictures from 1960-1965.  So far only 1961 and 1964 are completed.

The Four Queens is again running a Family and Friends Special for November, December and January.  $15 Sun-Thur, and $27 Fri-/Sat.  All you have to do is call 1-800-634-6045 (press one) and mention that you are a friend of Becky Snyder (Becky Rhodes Snyder '67) and you can get the rate. Based on Space Available, not good on holiday and special events.  Thanks, Becky, for sharing this with everyone.

        Sherry White, '62 is still trying to locate a copy of B. Jo Kinnick's book, "Time is the Stream."  Mrs. Kinnick was the creative writing teacher for Oakland High, and also put out the Oak Leaves every year. If any of you have a copy or know where Sherry can order one, please write to Sherry at grace2stand@yahoo.com .

         There's still time to get a 65 Reunion CD. For those of you that attended McChesney I included the 1962 McChesney Yearbook.  CD's are still available.  I've sent out at least 40 so far. If you want a Free CD of the 65 reunion last August, let me know.  Again, they are FREE.

   Biff posed the question, does anyone remember when Quaker Oats offered Deeds for 1 inch of the Yukon in a promotion for Sgt Preston of the Yukon?  You received ownership papers and a deed.  To see these items, go to www.ebay.com and type in search 730935482.  It shows really good photos of it.

      Larry "Bear" Doull is coordinating a trip to Australia for those of you who may be interested.   He calls it the trip of a lifetime!  You can turn winter into summer with this trip, and find yourself baking on an Australian beach!  The month long excursion features 2 nights in Melbourne, 2 nights in Adelaide (the city of churches), and the rest of the time In Perth and Fremantle, which is a city rarely seen by "Yanks" as it's on the WEST coast.   Lots of golf courses, eating establishments, beaches, clubs, and tons of photo ops.  Travelers will be staying at the Perth Ambassador.  The flight will be booked through QUANTAS, which has a PERFECT safety record.   The price has just dropped by $600, and now is the time to book.  Travel to and from the airport is covered, and all hotel accommodations are included.    Space is limited.   There is a special discount for couples traveling together and for Better Business Bureau members.   Deposits are due now to reserve your spot.  A minimum deposit of $1000 is required.   For exact cost and more details, contact Larry at bearsvcs@aol.com, or call him at 858 270-8250.    There is also a shorter two week trip available.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Special thanks to Carole Hewitt who scanned and sent some of the photos added to the 1952 and 1953 pages this week. Her constant help over the past year is really appreciated.
A big thank you also to Carole Vercellino, who photocopied the senior section of her '61 yearbook and sent the pages to
Bonnie and from there they came to me.
Again, may I ask anyone with a scanner and a yearbook to pitch in and help complete the memorial pages. Contact me at
After Tuesday's midterm elections it's interesting to look at one of the more prominent politicians to come out of OHS, elected to the governorship exactly 100 years ago.  George Pardee, whose father had also been a state politician, served as governor during the fateful San Francisco earthquake of 1906.   The Pardee family home in Oakland is a California Historical Landmark.  Lake Pardee and Pardee Dam were named for Governor George Pardee, OHS grad of 1875.  His obit in the New York Times highlights some of his many accomplishments.
Halloween is over.  I should be glad, but I'm not.  Christmas decorations are out already.  That means my husband has been shopping.  In a previous story I told you how he gets carried away with things.  Sigh………..it's already started.
   Hmmm, where do I begin?  In October the Christmas tree was already in the living room, (fake) waiting to be put together.
   Sadly, a year ago, our storage was broken into, and my ceramic village was taken.  I was crushed, because we really had a nice one.  We decided to try to build another one.  Everyday for the past week and a half, Mike's been shopping.  And he's not even near through. We've had to move the little village from the Buffet to the top of the entertainment center. It's growing faster than I can keep track of! I still had an old house that was my favorite and hadn't gone into storage.  We started with that one.  To that, he has bought 8 new houses, a skating pond, a tree slide, a mountain with skiers and vehicles, a lighthouse, and an animal hutch. He's also gotten an Ice mill, a wood mill, a restaurant, and a church.  Everytime he goes to the store, he buys more.  Trees, people, lamp poles. It's growing much faster than our other one did.  He's found a surplus of village pieces at Big Lots and Walmart, and goes there everyday to add something new.  He's put up an elaborate background of snow-covered hills made out of books and speakers covered with cotton.  I can see it won't be long before we open another ceramic homeless shelter for all the people he is buying!  He's considering putting shelves behind the Entertainment center to add on more "snow" and housing.  When, if ever, it is done, I'll take a photo. There is still two months until Christmas.  I might have to rent the apartment next store just to hold it all.
    Now, let's discuss what he has added to what he already had for decorating OUTSIDE! Let's see, he already HAD Reindeer, Santa's, Angels, snowmen and choir boys.  Of course they all lit up. Those that didn't, he had MORE lights to put around them. And flood lights. Then he had giant Candy Canes that encircled the yard. Did I mention the cases of spray snow he bought to make it look like a white Christmas?  He even had a standing manger scene, with all the animals.  Did I mention the 15 foot lighted star he put on a pole on our roof?  He ran lights all up and down the staircases, and around the balconies up stairs.  We even had a bottom of a santa (Legs and butt) that hung over the porch fence to look like Santa was climbing onto the porch.      That was mild.
       He's already started buying new stuff.  Remember, we live in a small apartment.
    He purchased a huge 8 foot air filled snowman that lights up, and an 8 foot Santa to match!  He's bought lighted reindoor, and lighted lanterns.  Four each.  And he's bought every plastic 3 foot candy cane in Barstow.  He will be putting them around the yard, and up and down the walkways.   He is not done.  He's already mentioned the big wooden signs at Big Lots that say "Santa's Workshop", and "North Pole". Not that he doesn't already have 10 of them in storage.
       I noticed the paper was open to a hardware store ad for flood lights.   Of course, I'm not even bringing up the outside lights.  He must have 50 strings in storage, plus he wants to buy another 10 or so boxes of the new type lights that are out, and a few sets of "blanket" lights that you lay over bushes or on trees.   The clerks love to see him coming. If they work on any kind of commission, he has to be their favorite customer!!
     Now, you would think with this much effort put into decorations, he would enter a contest.  Nope.  No one hardly ever see's our display.   We live in the very last apartment in the last apartment complex on the edge of Barstow. There is nothing beyond us but desert and the Sports Park.   We're not talking a main road, either.  We live on the backside, where only those who utilize the sports park in the dead of winter will see what has been done.
      It's only the beginning of November.  WE haven't even really STARTED to decorate.  I'm afraid to look every time he comes home from the store.  I never know what it will be.  And he hasn't decided what to do with the front and back porches and the front door.  Heaven only knows how he is going to use the 8 foot Santa and Snowman.
     I never know what it will be next, but at least he'll never be confused with the Grinch.
    Tuesday night I woke up and went out to get some water. The usually dark hallway was brightly lit.  The living room was ablaze with light.  Holy Crap!  What was going on?  I slowing moved down the hall and peeked in.  There were little houses everywhere, lit up, and glowing like daylight.  Mike had bought more ceramic buildings!  He had them on shelves and tables.  There were so many fake tree's even Smoky the bear would have gotten lost in the forest!  And sitting in the middle of all this was Mike, amidst plugs and wires, and little ceramic village pieces.  Now I know why his Mother hid his set of HO trains when he was 10.  I bet they ran all over the house!  When he first told me the story, I thought his Mother was mean.  Now I know what she must have went through.  He becomes obsessed!
  There were little fake trees of all sizes.  He even had set up a creek that ran through one of the houses.  Snowmen were in every tiny yard, and ceramic kids played hockey on the big pond.  There were so many lights, the living room looked like Las Vegas on a Saturday night!!  It was incredible!   I shook my head, drank my water and went back to bed.
       I'm certain he's spent the good part of today putting all this together in a more compact form. At least I hope so.
        Cripes, he hasn't even started on the yard.  He won't do that until after Thanksgiving.  I hope.  Already, what he has bought takes up almost 1/3 of the living room, and he hasn't gone to storage yet to get his regular stuff out.
    He's getting ready, though.  He sits on the porch with his little notebook, drawing, erasing, and drawing again, trying to design this years Christmas Spectacular. Sometimes while I'm inside watching TV, I can hear him laughing outside, all by himself, as he draws his little plans.   He says it's for the grandkids………..yeah.
  All I know is, after looking at NASA's website, I'm sure I could pinpoint our yard on some of the pictures from space.  The shuttle pilot probably uses it as a Landmark!
      Next week, we have to go out of town. Watch out world, Mike and his Visa Card will be loose in the big city!  Lord only knows what he'll bring home next.  I saw on the commercial that Lowe's has an entire AISLE for just Villiage parts.   uh OH!
