IN THIS ISSUE:

It's been almost two weeks since my last letter. They may continue to be a little erratic for a bit. While much of this letter is new, some of the last newsletter is repeated since you could not all read it.

Bev has built a new OHS Newsletter Site, where she is keeping the old newsletters, so if you can't read this, it is available at

www.oocities.org/ohsnewsletter

Of course if you can't read this, you still won't know.....so I will send out a straight text message to make sure everyone knows about it.

Sadly, my brother Tom Burke, '70, lost his oldest son suddenly last weekend. My nephew was only 29. As Tom said, A parent should never have to bury a child." No news on any services. We are all devastated by his loss. Thank you for all your kind thoughts and prayers. They have all been passed on to Tom.

Monday brought the passing of another OHSer, Larry "Bear" Doull, Class of 66. He passed away after an illness. He lived in San Diego, and owned a photography shop. He leaves behind three children, Cheryl, Rebecca and Justin. He is the former husband of Joyce Parson's Doull, '66. Our condolences to the family.

SURGERY UPDATE: Getting back to happier news, I have almost completed the testing for the surgery. I had the dreaded Psych evaluation and, surprise, I'M SANE! Hard to believe, but I completed that and the Pulmonary Function Test with flying colors. The Pulmonary test was no sweat. You blow into a tube off and on for 45 minutes. Since I'm so full of hot air anyway, according to family and friends, I passed with flying colors. All I have left is a blood gas test, and the sleep disorder clinic. I also need to have ONE more Echocardiogram done before the heart surgeon okays the surgery. This is just a precaution due to the heart failure I'm in. They say my heart is healthy and strong, just working to hard pumping blood. Before I have the surgery, hopefully the first week in January, I will post a photo of me at my highest weight, over 350. Then, I'll post them as I lose the weight. No, not naked pictures. Nice try.

Guess who will be Santa and his Elf? Last year Santa saw 300 kids and this year it should be a lot more. San Quentin has a program that gives new bikes to needy kids. Additionally old bikes are fixed up like new and contributed to this program also. Last year Santa was out until 1 AM delivering presents. They are delivered on a Fire Truck, so when the alarm comes in, everything goes off the truck, and they speed to the fire. This year, a Van filled with the toys will be following the truck. The Fire Department in Willits buys a lot of toys to contribute to this program. There is also an evening called Santa Night, where everyone is invited to the Firehouse to see Santa, and get a small toy, along with free hot dogs, pop corn, soda and candies. They can also take their picture with Santa. From now until December 6th, Santa's night, Santa and his Elf will be doing all they can to set this up. Still the best part is Christmas Eve and delivering presents. Who are Santa and his Elf? None other than our own Warren and Candy Miller, both of the class of '66. The world needs more Santas! Congratulations on past successes, and high hopes that this will be the best year yet for Santa, his elf, and the kids.

Got a message from Carol Bischofberger Blackman, '65, from Hawaii! I'm jealous. Hanging out in Paradise! Hope you guys have a good time!

Shirle Fong Foey, '65, writes their family has been busy. Her husband Alan and their son went hunting the end of September, and Dad brought back a 4/5 point buck, and Jason got a forked horn. Meanwhile, all the women went to Cabo for a week. The whole family, including significant others, will return to Cabo in June. Shirley's mom will soon be moving closer to her from California to Oregon, and she and Alan look forward to a huge family Thanksgiving. Our best to you and your family, Shirley.

Maureen Axelrod '65, and her husband enjoyed dinner and a movie with Patsy Faulkner '65 and her husband. Great to see old schoolmates still in such close touch. It still totally blows me away that so many of us are in touch at this twilight of our lives. Could it be any better? We're all blessed to have such close contact after so many years. I watch my kids, who are heading toward their fifteenth and twentieth reunions, and there is no where near the excitement or anticipation OR response that I've seen from our generation. I haven't figured out exactly why, but I feel badly they don't have the bond with old friends that we do. Any comments on this subject?

Yet, another case of seeing old friends. Susan Reiner Silverman '65, and her husband Mark recently attended the semi-annual formal Diable Cotillion at the Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton. Joining them was Debbie Katz Bardon '64 and her husband. Also attending were Robin Wong '65, and his wife. They took a photo of all of them together, so when I receive it, I'll post it for all to see.

Gary Giovannetti (Guido) '65 will take time off from building his new home to take his lovely wife Lynette for a cruise to the Mexican Riviera for a week. Enjoy, kids.

The Four Queens is again running a Family and Friends Special for November, December and January. $15 Sun-Thur, and $27 Fri-/Sat. All you have to do is call 1-800-634-6045 (press one) and mention that you are a friend of Becky Snyder (Becky Rhodes Snyder '67) and you can get the rate. Based on Space Available, not good on holiday and special events. Thanks, Becky, for sharing this with everyone.

There's still time to get a 65 Reunion CD. For those of you that attended McChesney I included the 1962 McChesney Yearbook. CD's are still available. . If you want a CD of the 65 reunion 2001, let me know.

I have completed the 1964 yearbook on CD. I am ¾ of the way done with 1965. If any of you have lost your yearbooks, or would just like a CD to view, Write and let me know. They are scanned at 100% and ready for printing out at a Kinko's or whatever. It even includes blank pages so that they will print correctly, COVER to COVER. The downside to this offer is that I did NOT clean off all the personal writings to me. It's AS IS. I can also put the '63 and '61 Senior photos on the CD for you, giving you lots to look at. Let me know if you are interested.

Anna Head
Founder of Miss Heads' Preparatory School for Girls, Berkeley, in 1887
(became Anna Head School in 1919)

6 May 1859 - 25 Dec 1932
73 Years Old

Historical Personalities
The Head-Royce School

Anna Head, daughter of Judge A. Edward and Eliza Head, graduated from Oakland High School in 1874 and the University of California at Berkeley in 1879, with a degree in education administration.  From 1880-1886 she traveled and studied in Boston and Europe.
Much of her time was spent in Greece, which forever solidified her love of the classics. When Anna Head returned from her post-graduate odyssey, she had strong ideas about education. Critical of the tedious and trivial routines that were prevalent in many American grammar schools of her day, she sought to borrow all that was best from the much admired English and German educational systems and adapt it to the needs of her students. Source knowledge of the classics, languages, and the scientific method became the crux of her curriculum.
When she returned to Oakland she founded Miss Heads' Preparatory School for Girls in Berkeley.

All of this can be read on the Head-Royce School web site, but what is not there is far more interesting.  Here then, is a bit of hundred-year old gossip, and a sadly tragic story of a poor little rich girl, taken from two New York Times articles:

ROMANCE OF AN HEIRESS.

California Girl to Marry an English
Lieutenant After Years of Waiting.
Special to The New York Times.
SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., July 16, 1903. --
Miss Anna Head, a California heiress, has started with her mother for London, where she will marry Lieut. A. Mounteney-Jephson, one of Stanley's assistants in the famous Emin Pasha relief expedition. [this is the Stanley expedition of "Livingston, I presume" fame] This is the climax to a love romance which began ten years ago, but which was checked for all these years by  Miss Head's father, who refused to make any settlement unless the girl married a title.  Mr. Head died recently, and now his daughter, who has waited all these years, will wed the man whom she loves.  Her fortune in her own right amounts to over $500,000.

Lieut. Jephson was enabled to join the Stanley expedition through the liberality of his aunt, Lady Jephson, who paid 1,000 pounds.  Stanley exacted from all his lieutenants a written promise that they would not publish any book until one year after his own book was published.  Jephson wrote a good book, and he was the only one of Stanley's officers who came out of the expedition with any credit.  Major Barteliot, the ablest officer of the expedition, proved to be a monster of cruelty and was killed by a native.

Lieut. Jephson's health was broken by African fever, however, and he came to California to recuperate.  Here he met Miss Head, and they fell in love.  As the girl's father refused to make any marriage settlement because Jephson had no title, the engagement was broken because Jephson couldn't marry without money.

The story continues tragically a few years later.

LIEUT. JEPHSON DEAD.

King's Messenger Took Part in the
Emin Pasha Relief Expedition.

LONDON, Oct 22, 1908. --
Lieut. Arthur Jeremy Mounteney Jephson, who had been the King's Messenger since 1901, and prior to that the Queen's Messenger since 1895, died to-day.  Lieut. Jephson commanded a detachment in the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition under Henry M. Stanley in 1887-90.  In 1904 he married Miss Anna Head, daughter of the late Addison E. Head of San Francisco.

Lieut. Jephson was enabled to join the Stanley expedition through the liberality of his aunt, Lady Jephson, who paid $5000 for that privilege.  Jephson came out of the expedition with credit, although some of the officers were charged with great cruelty.  His health was broken by African fever, however, and he went to California to recuperate.

There he met Miss Head, but her father was opposed to a marriage, and it was not until twelve years later that Miss Head, accompanied by her mother, proceeded to London, where the marriage took place.  Miss Head was said to have had a fortune in her own right of nearly $1,000,000.

Anna Head retired in 1909.  Now we know why.
