Thales was born on about 624-636 B.C. in Miletus, Greece. According to poupular tridition he lived mainly as one of the Seven Sages. The Seven Sages were man who lived between 620-550 B.C.know for there wisdom as rulers, lawgivers, councilors, and authors of maxims. Many tales were told of him. One of these is: he is an uunpractical dreamer and falls into a well while star-gazing. In another: he shows himself superior to ordinary practical man by the use of his sientific knowledge. It is plain to see that people had no idea of his real work and thought he was just a simple 'sage'. These stories tell us nothing of thales himself but they do tell us that he was a very sientific man. Thales predicted that on May 28, 585 B.C. there was going to be a solor eclispe and there was a solor eclipse. Thales introduced Geometry into all greece whitch spred all over the world. So the Geometry that people learn today was from thales. They belive that thales wrote only 2 things One on the soltice the other on the Equinox. They also belive that Thales was the first person to ever look for a phsical of the world instead os resting on mythology. Thales was also the first person to be declared A man of sience. The greeks started to belive that the earth was an island. These are two thing he belived: That the earth floated on water and that everything was water and therefore everything that came from water returned to water. One man thought he got this because all things are moist. Thales was also a great teacher (As Mrs. Ingle is) one of his star students was Pythagoras. These are some more students that he taught: Mamercus, Hippiasof Elis, Anaxagoras, Eudoxus of Cnidus, Philipppus of Mende, Eucild, and Edemus. Some of his writtings were open to some of these men. Thales also dicoverd the seasons and divided it into 365 days. So he would've know how many days between summer soltice and winter soltice. Thales died on the year about 546 B.C. he was 90 years old. |
