Our Lady of Angels 20/30s Young Adult Group
On one evening in the early 1990s, several young adults gathered at Our Lady of Angels Parish in Burlingame to discuss ways they could become more involved in the Church and community. This initial meeting led to the formation of the OLA 20/30s Young Adult Group. Over the last few years, the group has developed in size and strength, providing young people in the area with many opportunities to share and grow their faith among their peers.
The 20/30s group is a Catholic/Christian community dedicated to fellowship through philanthropic, social and spiritual activities. Singles and married couples who live in Burlingame are actively involved, as are those who live in other parts of the Bay Area.
The group meets regularly the first Tuesday night of each month to discuss and plan upcoming events and activities. These include:
Young Adult Mass - Every second and fourth Sunday night Mass at OLA is planned by the 20/30s group. We sing in the choir, serve as Eucharistic ministers and lectors, and sometimes participate in the homily.
Faithsharing - 20/30s group members have formed and facilitated Renew discussion groups over the last few seasons. In addition, faithsharing nights are held once a month to discuss topics related to our beliefs and
values, such as conscience and choices.
Outreach - Each Christmas and Easter, the group adopts a family and purchases food and other items to help them celebrate these holidays. Also, members have participated in Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in April projects.
Fundraising - Our major summer fundraisers have raised thousands of dollars for individuals facing serious illnesses. The most recent event was held in June 1999. "Richard's Ragin' Cajun Festival" featured live music, dancing, dinner, and a raffle and silent auction. The evening brought together
hundreds of people, raising over $25,000 to benefit Richard Louisell, a man suffering from AMN, and The Myelin Project, an organization dedicated to helping people in their fight against the disease.
Fun - We plan additional events just to relax and have fun. These include nights out dining and dancing; days sailing on the bay; and afternoons playing flag football and volleyball.
All of our activities give us the opportunity to build friendships, learn from each other and grow in our faith. We invite you to learn more about our group and join us in our activities. Please contact us!
