Ford Factory Race Cars
1965
The year of the Mustang
Last updated on 11 / 11 / 2001 at 10:52 a.m.
The 1965 model year was the mother lode for Ford. They caught the car world a sleep at the wheel so to speak and drove the New Mustang right over them! Ford would have that part of the car market all to themselves for two years as General Motors stumbled around, looking to see what they could cobble together! The Mopar boys had the Barracuda, but it was just another compact car with no go. They drug it out till '67, like GM and watched Ford clean up on the youth market.

This is what Ford used to clean up on the drag strip with. A 427 powered, 1965 A/FX Mustang built for the Ford race program. Holman & Moody built 10 of these killers. Seven of them were built with the Single Overhead Cam 427 or the SOHC as it became known. The other three were 427 Hi-Risers as the Cammers were in short supply and only the top racers had a chance at one. These were true Factory Experimental race cars with almost no real relation ship with the production versions. Fiberglass doors, Fenders, splash pans, deck lid. Holman & Moody used the window frames and plexi glass side windows from the Shelby GT 350 "R" models too. The shock towers really do get in the way of the wider 427's and for sure with the Cammers too, so they just cut them out and replaced them with a flat plate. The front coil springs bought the farm at this time and were replaced with a twin leaf quarter epileptic spring that ran forward from the lower control arms to a fixed mount on the front of the frame rail. These springs were force to twist in their travel. They worked fine.
For those of you who maybe wondered what happened to the Corvettes that were road racing in 1965.The above ad should explain what took over SCCA B/Production that year.
We are still building this one, come on back and check on it again!!
