“About this Poem”

This poem came as I watched a Mimosa tree that voluntarily
came up in the side yard of my home in Tennessee.
as it grew it began to take on a strange familiarity
With each new day it begin to look more
like the Mimosa which grew at my home in Virginia
so much so that I’ve often wondered,
is it really another Mimosa
or,
has the one in Virginia simply followed me?

“The Mimosa”
~~~~~~~~
In Winter when all is quit as the season gives way to snow.
After the mighty shades of summer,
have shed their leaves as cold wind blows
There in a lowly place it stands where the bank rises from the road.
With the foreboding form of it’s entangled trunk,
no beauty does it show.
~~~~~~~~
Its tiny branches first appeared the summer I arrived.
And slowly over the next two years,
it began to grow in size.
With nourishment from the sun and rain and a little help from me.
The bright purple clusters of its many blooms,
Formed a lovely Mimosa tree.
~~~~~~~~
One sprang up a few years back in a place I still recall.
We let it grow so pretty and green,
then transplanted it in early fall.
The leaves would close up at night to hold the moisture in.
Then at dawn they would reopen,
and by noon be beautiful again.
~~~~~~~~
From the terrace it grew and grew until its limbs became so long.
And from each limb grew cloisters of blooms,
Those blooms have long since gone.
Then purple blended with green leaves brighten our lives each passing day.
Until the Summer gave in to Fall,
and it’s beauty faded away.
~~~~~~~~
Today as I look back in time to a life that’s long since past.
Unlike the wintery Mimosa,
her loveliness will forever last.
As I look out my window to where the bank rises from the road.
I think of her each day of Summer,
From where my Virginia Mimosa grows.
