"You o.k. Benson?" Cragen asked, tapping her on the shoulder. She didn't answer, "Olivia?"

"What? Oh, yeah… I'm ok." She said. She rubbed her eyes.

"I'll see you tomorrow. Bright and early."

"Yeah. See you tomorrow." Olivia watched Cragen shut the door. She leaned her head on her arm and shut her eyes. She felt a hand on her back, a hand that rubbed her back comfortingly for a moment before sitting in the chair in front of her.

"What's wrong Olivia?" Elliot asked her.

"Nothing."

"Olivia, you can't blame yourself forever." Elliot coaxed, "You did good today."

She sighed, "Then why do I feel so bad?"

"Because this one got personal, Liv." Olivia said nothing. "You want a ride home?"

"No."

"Are you going to go home tonight?"

"No."

"Then how about a drink?"

Olivia smiled, "Elliot, don't you ever give up?"

"No." Elliot smiled, "Come on, I'll buy you a drink."

***

Olivia put down her glass, "Thank you Elliot,"

"No problem."

"You're such a good guy. Kathy is very lucky to have you."

"I don't know how true that is." Elliot looked down into his glass, "I mean, I'm never home."

"This job does demand a lot of time, doesn't it?"

Elliot nodded, "Speaking of which," he glanced at his watch, "I think it's time for me to head home."

"I think I will go home."

Elliot got up. "See you tomorrow," Olivia nodded.

He was almost to the door, "Elliot?"

He stopped and turned back, "Yes?"

She walked up to him, "Thank you," she paused, "again."

Elliot smiled warmly at her, "You're welcome," he smiled then paused, "again."

She let out a small laugh. She looked at him for a moment and then kissed him softly on the lips. She pulled away, "I'm sorry." She said worriedly and looked around, "I'm sorry."

Elliot kissed her lightly but lingeringly on the lips, he pulled away slowly. "There, now we're both sorry."

***

"You want one Liv?" Elliot motioned to his roast beef sandwich, "I noticed you looking at it. And I realized I didn't ask you if you wanted one."

"No, you did ask, when we were at the cart," Olivia corrected, "I was just wondering… if that's actually food."

"It is." Elliot insisted.

"It doesn't look like food." Olivia laughed. "If I could just-" she reached towards it but withdrew her hand.

Elliot smiled playfully, "You want some." He paused, "Here," He pulled a piece off and held it up to her.

She smiled and ate the food out of his hand. "You win. It is food… and it's good." She pouted.

He offered it to her, "You want a bite?"

Olivia waved it off, "No thanks." She looked at him, "Thank you though."

Elliot smiled, "Any time, Liv."

A cell phone ringing was heard. Elliot picked his up and hit the button, "Stabler." There was another ring. "It's you Liv," He stuck his cell phone in his pocket.

Olivia picked up her cell phone, "Benson." She paused to listen. "Ok, we'll be right there."

***

"What's up?" Elliot asked as he walked up to Munch.

Munch turned to look at Elliot and Olivia, he turned back to the door before answering, "A rape."

"We figured that."

"They've estimated her to be about 15 or 16, she had no identification and she isn't talking." Finn filled in.

"Is she awake?" Olivia asked.

"Yeah, she's been awake for 10 minutes." Munch conceded.

"What's her story?" Elliot corrected himself, "Like, did someone find her and bring her in, or… what?"

"A grocer found her this morning. She was asleep behind his building, she looked pretty beat up so he brought her here." Finn told Olivia and Elliot.

"And we know that she was raped?" Olivia asked.

"Doctor found semen on her." Munch nodded.

"One more question." Olivia started, "Why are we all just standing out here?"

"We thought you should go in and talk to her," Finn answered.

"Me? Why?"

"She's not talking, we're thinking, girl-to-girl." Munch said, "She might talk to you."

"Munch," Olivia smiled, "I'm flattered. You called me a girl. Here I thought I was just one of the guys."

"You are." Munch assured.

"You're definitely a girl, Liv." Elliot smiled at her.

Olivia smiled at Elliot again and then pushed open the door to the hospital room.

"What was that all about?" Munch grinned at Elliot and leaned against the wall. "And since when do you call her Liv?"

"I call her Liv sometimes." Elliot shrugged. "It's not a big deal."

"Uh-huh."

"We're friends." Elliot stated, then looked pointedly at Munch, "That's all."

"Ok." Munch looked at Finn who shrugged, "Whatever you say."

Elliot pushed open the door, "Is it just me or is Munch a little annoying."

"It's part of his charm," Olivia sat down in a chair next to the girl's bed. "Hi, I'm Olivia." She smiled.

"Hello Olivia." The girl answered monotonously.

"You want to tell me what happened?"

"I don't know what happened."

"I'd understand if you're embarrassed and maybe want Elliot to leave?"

"No. He can stay. I don't care." She turned her head away, "Are you cops?"

"Yes," Olivia showed her her badge, "We believe that you were raped."

The girl laughed. It was a low condescending laugh, "I wasn't raped."

"The doctor found traces of semen on you," Olivia began.

"I had sex last night." She leaned forward, "Completely consensual sex."

"With your boyfriend?"

"He's not my boyfriend." She shook her head, "I don't have a boyfriend."

Olivia looked at Elliot, she could tell this girl was not going to make anything easy. "That's still statutory rape. You're underage."

"Nice try. I'm 16, I can legally have consensual sex."

She looked away. Five minutes went by and still she said nothing. "Can you tell us your name?" Olivia asked.

"Why?"

"So we can contact your parents," Elliot intervened, "I'll bet they're worried about you."

"I envy people who can say their parents love them." She sniffled, "Hell, I'd settle for my mother liking me.

"I'm in enough trouble as it is not making curfew…. Might as well get a cop to verify my whereabouts." She paused again, "My name is Faith. My mother's name is Faye Night."

Olivia poked her head out the door, Faith could hear her say something but couldn't understand what it was. Olivia reappeared. She addressed Elliot, "Finn and Munch are going to notify the mother."

"Ok."

"Elliot," She paused, "I'm going to go get something to drink." She went to the door and stopped, "Do you want anything?"

"Uh… Pepsi," he reached into his pocket for money, "Here,"

"No, you bought me a drink or two last night, I've got it."

"Liv, take the money, that was a nice gesture, you're not supposed to pay me back!" Elliot protested.

Without another word she left the room. Elliot sighed and put the money back in his pocket.

"That was cute," Faith said.

Elliot jumped, he had been so enchanted by Olivia that he had almost forgotten Faith was in the room.

"She your girlfriend?"

"Uh…" he stuttered, "No. I'm married."

"Pity, you two'd be cute together."

"Really?" He smiled despite himself, "You think so?"

Faith nodded, "She likes you, too. I can tell."

"How can you tell?" Elliot asked, "How could you possibly know."

"You think just because I'm a tramp that I don't understand love?" She snapped.

Elliot, quickly realizing he had either said the wrong thing or the right thing had been misconstrued, amended himself, "I meant…" he sighed, "I didn't mean that you wouldn't understand love. I just meant that Liv can be a little hard to read sometimes."

"Oh." She said, "Though I suppose I don't exactly know love, first-hand anyway. My mother hates me."

"I don't think she hates you." Elliot soothed, "Isn't that a little harsh? What'd she do? What'd she do? Make your curfew earlier so you couldn't stay out as long?"

Faith closed her eyes and shook her head slowly.

"What makes you think that she hates you?"

"Well silly me, I interpret 'you're the biggest mistake of my life' and 'you goddamned whore', as hate." She laughed dryly, "Those certainly aren't compliments."

"No, I guess not." He thought about that for a moment, "And your Dad?"

"Dead."

"I'm sorry."

"I never met him. There was no obituary either, I think Faye killed him." Faith closed her eyes, "Wouldn't be surprised. Everything she touches turns to ash."

After a long silent moment Elliot walked back towards the door. He opened the door as Olivia tried to open it from the other side. "Oh, sorry Liv."

"Where you going?" She asked. "I got your drink."

He took it, "Thanks Liv, I'll be right back. I need some air." She nodded and turned to the door. She closed it softly behind her.

"Elliot and I had a nice chat."

"Oh yeah? What about?"

"He's cute, don't you think?"

"Yeah. I mean… he's married, you know."

"Yeah, I know, he said. But I saw the way you looked at him. A little crush perhaps?" Faith smiled.

"Perhaps." Olivia's cell phone rang, she turned away and picked it up, "Benson."

It was Finn, "The mother's coming your way,"

"Ok."

"She's a real charmer." The sarcasm in Finn's voice was overwhelmingly apparent.

"Ok thanks." Olivia hung up. She turned to Faith, "Your mother's here."

A look of dread swept over Faith's face. She bit her bottom lip.

The door opened. "Faith," a woman's voice growled. She stepped ominously into the room. Olivia could tell that Faith was terrified.

"Yes… mother?" She whimpered.

"What are you doing wasting these policemen's time?" She snarled.

Olivia stood up, "Mrs. Night, she's not wasting our time. We were called in by the hospital. We just had to check."

The doctor walked in. "Can I take my daughter home?"

"Her physical checks out." The doctor said, "Unless the SVU would like her to stay…"

Olivia was about the protest to Faith going home. Something wasn't quite right about this. Olivia wished she could just talk to Faith, but she was sure now that Faye intervened that that would be next to impossible. "No, she can go home."

"Get dressed," Faye sneered. She left the room.

Olivia looked at Faith, she was crying softly. "Can I do something for you?"

"No," Faith wiped at her tears.

Olivia looked on futilely, she reached into her jacket, she produced her card, "You know, if you need something, you can call me."

Faith smiled, "Thank you."

Olivia walked out into the hall. She looked around for Elliot, she didn't see him. She walked down the steps of the hospital, "Something about that girl didn't sit right with me Elliot."

He turned around, "Yeah, I know what you mean."

"I think we should follow-up."

"You heard her. She said she wasn't raped. If it's not a sex crime, it's out of our jurisdiction, Liv."

Olivia looked uneasy, "Yeah… I know."

***

Two days had gone by since Olivia had seen Faith, but she hadn't been able to get her off her mind. It had been slow. Maybe, Olivia thought, that everyone suddenly realized that crime was not the way to go and everyone gave up illegal activity. Olivia laughed to herself. As if that'd ever happen.

"Olivia?"

Olivia looked up startled, "Huh? What's wrong Elliot?"

"Nothing. You just looked pretty spaced out. You ok?"

"Yeah, I'm ok."

"You still thinking about her?"

Olivia decided to play dumb, "Who?"

"You know who."

Olivia knew exactly what he was talking about, though she scarcely wanted to admit it. Olivia had gotten too close before and she didn't want to this time, but she couldn't help it. She sympathized with her, more than that, she empathized with Faith. Olivia sighed and looked down half-guiltily. "Am I that transparent?"

He smiled at her. "I haven't stopped thinking about her either." He pulled his chair in front of Olivia, "it started out, it seemed like she was going to be difficult. She was going to jerk us around and give us a hard time. But then she sort of… softened up to us."

"Benson, you got a call."

"Thanks," She called back, she picked up the phone, "Benson."

Elliot looked on. A puzzled look came over Olivia's face, her expression quickly changed to concern.

"Ok." She said, "We'll be right there." She hung up the phone.

"What…?"

"That was Faith."

***

"Why did you lie?" Olivia asked Faith. Faith was sitting on the bed of her best friend and neighbor. Her best friend was rubbing her back comfortingly.

"Because… first I thought it was my fault, then I thought that you'd think it was my fault."

"I do not think it was your fault." Olivia soothed. "But you should have told me before. We lost that DNA when you were released from the hospital."

Faith hung her head, "I'm sorry,"

"It’s ok," Elliot assured her, "Why don't you tell us what you remember?"

She closed her eyes and gulped, "I went to a party. I was snuggling up to this guy from my school, Jake… Jack… Joe, something like that… and he asked me if I wanted to go up to a room. My promiscuity is pretty well known around school. I told him I didn't want to and that I was just going to go home…" She paused. She put her hand over her eyes, she rubbed her eyes and then looked up. "And I was walking home, I was only three blocks away from my house…"

Her eyes teared up and she blinked them out. Her cheeks were red and her eyes were puffy. She sniffled.

"And all of a sudden a car pulled up and it was him, he got out and so did about five other guys, I recognized two. And they really roughed me up. That's all I remember. But I didn't have sex that night and I don't remember being raped."

"I would've been with her," Faith's friend said, "But I left early because I had a Chemistry exam the next day."

"What's your name?"

"Dawn du Matin."

"You were at the party?"

"Yes." She admitted, "Only for a little while."

"Did you see the boy she was with?"

"Yes, his name is Jack Couteau."

Elliot and Olivia were walking down the stairs to let themselves out when the front door opened. The woman saw the detectives and jumped. "Who are you?"

Olivia and Elliot flashed their badges, "New York City Police."

"Oh my God! Dawn!" The woman looked as though she were going to faint dead away.

"Dawn's alright. Don't worry." Olivia soothed. "We came about Faith."

"Oh!" She nodded, "You guys finally got around to it, huh? It's about time. That poor girl."

"Whoa, whoa… what do you mean, we finally got around to it?" Elliot was clearly confused.

"A few months ago I called the police about Faye…" Suddenly she was upset again, "What happened to Faith?"

"She was raped."

"Oh God!" She sunk to a chair in the foyer.

"Are you of any relation to Faith?" Elliot inquired.

"Not by blood. But I don't mind telling you, I love that girl like my own daughter. She's sweet, smart and so neglected."

"Neglected? What do you mean?"

"By Faye." She shook her head, "I've been telling Faye for years that by lavishing attention on Pam and denying Faith any was a mistake. I told her it would have negative consequences. You really can't blame Faith for her promiscuity. She doesn't get any love at home."

"Does Mrs. Night abuse her psychically?" Olivia asked.

"Probably, I wouldn't put it past her. Faye has a violent temper sometimes and not a very pleasant temperament. But I see the mental abuse. She has no concept of her own competency. Poor kid."

***

"I didn't do nothing!" Jack yelled at Elliot.

"Do you know Faith Night?"

"Yeah." He replied suspiciously, in his thick New York accent. "Everybody does. She's the biggest tramp at school."

"Did you see her two nights ago?" Elliot asked. Olivia remained silent, sitting in the chair next to Elliot, who was standing.

"Yeah." He answered, then paused to judge Elliot and Olivia's reactions, "She was at that party that I went to."

"Oh yeah? And did you two hook up?"

"No. I never talked to her. I stayed with my boys the whole time, you know?"

"Is that right?" Olivia asked, looking up slowly, "She was raped, you know?"

"I didn't rape that bitch! If she said I raped her she's fucking lying!" Jack yelled, "If I wanted her all I'd have to do is ask. She doesn't turn down no one."

"And she was roughed up real good, you and your boys know anything about that?" Olivia demanded.

"No!"

"Yeah well, we think you do," Elliot said coolly, he took his chair and sat backwards in it. "Why don't you stop lying and tell us the truth. We've already talked to Faith and Dawn."

"But they're hoes!"

"Just tell us the truth, Jack."

Jack looked down at the table, "Ok. So I did hook up with her at the party. I asked her to go upstairs with me and she said no. As she was walking home, we might've gotten outta the car and… roughed her up a little."

"Might've or you did?"

"We did." Jack admitted, "But we didn’t rape nobody!"

Olivia scowled at Jack. She and Elliot left the room. Alex and Cragen were waiting for them.

"I'm not sure." Elliot sighed.

"You're not sure?" Olivia countered disgustedly.

"No, I'm not. I think we should go 'round to the school."

"Ok," Cragen said, "You two go to the school. I'll get Munch and Finn to survey the area where the grocer found her."

***

Olivia and Elliot walked into the school. They were looking for Faith, or someone who could lead them to Faith, namely: Dawn. They spotted Dawn, leaning against a locker with her arms wrapped tightly around a guy.

As they got closer they could here, "Oh… Kerry…"

"Dawn." Olivia called.

She looked up startled. She eased up when she saw the detectives. "Oh god. You scared me. I thought it was Yen!"

"Who?"

"The Vice Principal." She paused, "You're looking for Faith?"

"Yes." Olivia nodded.

"Where she is every day after school."

"Detention." Kerry and Dawn said simultaneously.

Olivia and Elliot ascended the stairs following the directions that Dawn gave to them. There it was, room 219. Elliot pushed the door open with a creak.

Olivia surveyed the room. At the front of the room sat a woman with black-haired pulled back behind her head in a very tight bun. She wore small black-framed glasses. Her attire was very formal, white blouse, every last button buttoned up and long black skirt. Olivia couldn't help being reminded of German disciplinarian.

At first glance Elliot didn't see Faith. He glanced around the room several times before he realized the girl in the back row leaning against the heater, engrossed in a hardcover copy of Pride and Prejudice, was Faith.

Elliot and Olivia started towards Faith when the woman at the front stood up. Her tone matched disciplinarian exterior. "Can I help you?"

Olivia felt the need to do up the top button on her blouse all of a sudden. "Uh…" Olivia stammered, she flashed her badge, "I'm detective Benson and this is my partner Elliot, we're with the Special Victim's Unit."

"Henrietta Yen, Vice Principal." She looked calm but her voice betrayed a hint of worry, "What's wrong?"

"We need to speak with Faith Night."

Ms. Henrietta Yen seemed to lose interest in the conversation pretty fast at the mention of Faith. "She's at the back of the room." She said sitting back down at her desk. She scowled at the detectives before they turned their backs to her.

Olivia pulled on Faith's foot which she had propped up on the desktop. "Hey Faith, let's chat."

She didn't look up. "I'm in detention."

"We got you excused." Elliot answered.

"If I leave now, I get a whole new one. I've already served over half of this one. I don't intend to get another one because I missed the last ten minutes."

"Then we'll chat here."

Faith put the book down on the desk. "'Bout what?"

"Any guy giving you a hard time."

"No." Faith sighed, "Hard time is unnecessary. The guys around here know I'm accessible and not picky."

"You don't seem to be taking this very seriously." Olivia scowled.

"Why don't you spend your time on someone who is worth it?" Faith looked as though she was going to cry.

"Faith! What's wrong?"

"My mom found that I called you. She doesn't want me accusing anyone of raping me." She looked down, "I deserve everything I get."

"Do you believe that?" Olivia asked in shock.

"Yeah. It's called Karma."

"Faith…" Olivia was at a loss for words. Olivia had seen a lot of reluctant victims in her time. Most of the time they were embarrassed, scared, or intimidated. Faith believed that she wasn't worth their time. She thought she deserved it. Olivia tried to puzzle it out but couldn't speak.

"No one deserves to be raped." Elliot filled in for her.

Faith started to cry softly, "Please. Drop it. I beg you."

"Faith, who are you afraid of?" Olivia demanded.

Faith shook her head and went back to her reading position with her book blocking her face from the detectives.

Round One was over, they lost.

***

Munch flashed his badge to the grocer, Amelio Fernandez. "We need you to show us where you found her. Take us through what you know one more time."

"I thought the case was dropped."

"Well we picked it up."

"Ok, I came in that morning to open my stall. I had been opened for a good twenty minutes before I heard a groan. I went to look all I saw at first was Harry across the street packin' up. But then I went to change the garbage bags and I saw the girl layin' in between the garbage cans. I thought she was dead!"

"Harry? Who's Harry?" Finn inquired.

"Harry is the guy who spends the night across the street at his cart."

"Thank you." Finn said, "We're going to need his full name. You wouldn't happen to know it, would you?"

"No. But it's just about time for him to show up."

No sooner said than a man pushing a cart came up the street. "Thanks." Munch said as he started to make his way across the street. He walked up to Harry, the vendor. "You open?"

"What'll you have?"

Munch reached for his wallet and pulled out a five dollar bill. "Give me a cheeseburger."

"Munch." Finn said in a low tone.

"I didn't have lunch." He paid Harry.

"Anything else?"

"Yeah," he flashed his badge, "Some information."

Harry looked worried, "What do you need to know?"

"A few nights ago, a girl was assaulted and raped. We want to know what you know." Munch said through bites of cheeseburger.

"Ok. A Car full of boys stopped when she was right over there and they started pushing her and touching her. I couldn't hear what they were saying, she didn't look too worried, she was pushing back and trying to walk away. One of them pushed her against the wall and she hit her head, hard, and she fell. After some loud exclamations they jumped back into their car and sped off."

Munch took another bite.

Finn rolled his eyes at Munch, "Any thing else?"

"Later on that night. There was another one."

"Another what?"

"Another guy." Harry amended, "The second one's you're guy. He's gotta be."

"You sure?"

"Yeah." Harry nodded confidently.

"So… you watched a girl get raped and didn't intervene or call the police?" Munch asked from behind his dark glasses.

"Nothing seemed wrong with it. He stopped, I heard his voice. I didn't think anything of it. But he was the last person to walk by until Amelio opened up that morning."

"Thank you." Fin said as he started to walk away. He realized that his partner was not following. He turned around, "Munch!" he cried impatiently.

"Diet Pepsi, please."

***

Cragen shook his head, "Do we have any choice but to drop this case?"

"Yes!" Olivia insisted. "She didn't say she wasn't raped. She was and it’s still our case."

"Ok, Olivia," Alex nodded, "What's your course of action now?"

Olivia looked to Elliot. He sighed, "We're going to talk to the mother,"

Alex snorted a short laugh, "What do you hope to accomplish by that?"

"The mother is obviously the reason that Faith won't talk."

"Maybe we can talk her into believing that her daughter is worth her time and ours." Olivia sighed.

"What do we got on her?" Elliot asked as Munch walked into the room with a printout.

"Four priors: accessory to Murder and Larceny and two counts of prostitution."

Elliot stood up, "Ok, we're on our way. Come on, Liv."

She stood and followed him out of the room.

***

Olivia teetered back and forth on her heels. Elliot wrung the doorbell for the fourth time.

Olivia walked up to the door impatiently and slammed her fist into it once, "Police! Open up!"

They could hear muffled voices on the other side of the door. The door opened slowly. The familiar, though unwelcomingly familiar, face of Faye Night appeared in the doorway. "Oh yes. You're the detectives I talked to the other night." She stepped aside, "Please come in."

"Thank you." Elliot and Olivia walked in and they were led to the living room/ dining room. Faith looked up. Her facial expression betrayed nothing. Olivia couldn't find relief, fear, worry, dread or anything.

"Faith," Faye called, "Get the detectives something to drink."

"No thank you." Olivia said.

"Don't be silly! I insist,"

"Ok." Elliot agreed.

"Faith, get us some coffee." Faye said with a tone that hinted that Faith didn't have a choice.

"I'm doing my calculus." Faith protested.

"Move!" Faye barked.

Olivia and Elliot were taken aback and Faith jumped from her chair and disappeared into the kitchen.

Faith returned with three cups of coffee balanced on a tray. On the tray was creamer and sugar along with three spoons. She set the tray down gently on the coffee table in front of the three adults. She poured a small amount of creamer into one of the cups and a spoonful of sugar. She stirred it silently and then handed it to her mother. Faith looked at Olivia and Elliot, "What would you like in your coffee?"

"I take it black." Elliot said as he took the coffee from Faith, "Thank you," he added.

"I can get it, thank you, sweetie." Olivia picked up the spoon and dipped it into the sugar bowl.

Faith looked at Faye before walking back to the table.

Faye smiled at Olivia and Elliot, "So, what can I help you with?"

"We're conducting an investigation." Olivia explained.

"What about?"

"Your daughter's rape."

Faye shook her head. She put her coffee cup down on the tray, she frowned, "Detectives. Faith was not raped. Nobody would have to," she threw a dirty look at Faith. "What did I tell you?"

"Mrs. Night, please." Olivia coaxed.

"Oh please, Detective, I know my daughter. She's been a slut since she was thirteen," Faye went to Faith, she grabbed her arm and yanked her up, Faith cringed.

"Mom!"

"Go to your room," She pulled her to the stairs.

"Mom! You're hurting me!" Faith winced.

Olivia and Elliot were dumbfounded.

Faye forced Faith to look at her, "Stop this rape business right now and we'll forget about it."

"I was raped mother! I was beaten and raped. Fuck you!" Faith yelled.

Faye was livid. Faith tried to run up the stairs before she could face Faye's wrath, but didn't make it. Faye shoved her hard down onto the stairs. Faith cried out.

Olivia and Elliot jumped up. Olivia grabbed Faye, and pulled her hands behind her back. She slapped the handcuffs on, "Faye Night you're under arrest."

"For what?" She screamed.

"Child abuse and obstruction of justice." Elliot led her out to the car reciting her rights as he shut the door behind him.

Faith had rolled over and clutched her sides. Tears streamed down her face she inhaled deeply and gasped. "Olivia…"

"Faith, you're going to be ok!" Olivia insisted with a rush of urgency, she pulled her cell phone from her pocket, "This is Benson. I need an ambulance!"

Round two was over, Faith lost.
