Interview tip

The #1 interview tip for having a successful job interiew is to research the company or organization that you're interviewing with. A predictable interview question that many applicants do not prepare for is "What do you know about us?" The number of job candidates who have been eliminated because of their inability to articulately answer that simple question could fill a stadium.

Make sure to visit the company's web site and take some notes about what it does, how long it's been around, what its accomplishments are, its mission, its size, and those kind of things. You'll make a really good impression if you sound like you did your homework on the company. (And you'll saddle yourself with a major competitive disadvantage if you fail to research the company.)

Interview tip #2: Another common, but vitally important question that a surprising number of job seekers have stumbled over (and have been eliminated from consideration) is "What can you tell us about yourself?" (or some variation, thereof). Sounding intelligent and putting your best foot forward involves giving some thought, a day or two before the interview, about what your strategy in answering that key question is going to be. Generally, your answer should focus on why you're qualified and intensely interested in the job you're being interviewed for. Most people are better off rehearsing or writing out the answer to that question before they're sitting across from the interviewer, especially if you tend to get at all nervous in that situation.

Interview Tip #3: "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" Chances are strong that you're going to hear that interview question and will need to answer it in a confident, well organized, and positive way. Failing to mentally outline your answer to those questions in advance will usually translate into being elimated from the running early in the proverbial race.

Interview Tip #4: Be there a few minutes early. Probably the top two ways to make a bad first impression is to be late (regardless of the reason) and to go into the interview knowing little or nothing about the company with which you're about to interview.

Interview Tip #5: Go into the interview with a positive mental attitude. If you start saying to yourself "I'm nervous", "There's a lot of competition", "I probably doen't have enough experience", then you'll defeat yourself before you even arrive at the job interview. Make up your mind to be motivated, enthusiastic, and optimistic.
