Stoney Creek Church & Fort Blackmore

The Melungeons came to Newman's Ridge and Blackwater in
1804 and some as early as 1795. They originally were the "friendly
Indians" who came with the whites as they moved west. They came from
the Cumberland County and New River stopping at various points west of
the Blue Ridge. Some of them stopped at Stoney Creek Virginia where
Stoney Creek empties into the Clinch River. These "friendly
Indians" along with the whites helped erect a fort there called Fort
Blackmore, but they have married among the whites until the race is
almost extinct.
