| Downriver World Record:
1987 World Record of 253 kilometers was set on the Vistula River in Poland. In 1997 Ian Adamson smashed the record paddling on the Colorado River in a Prijon Down-River racing kayak, paddling a distance of kilometers! In 1998, Ian Adamson increased the record to 349 kilometers, paddling a Futura Surfski on the Yukon River in northern Canada. In 2003, Ian attempted once again to increase the record, paddling a Futura on the Yukon River once again. This attempt yielded 235 kilometers due to a series of problems. One month later I, Joe O’Blenis, paddled a Necky Looksha II sea kayak down the Peace River in British Columbia and Alberta for a total of 275 kilometers in just under 22 hours on the water and also encountered a number of problems along the way. In 2004, there would be a World Record challenge on the Yukon River, organized by Futura Surfskis from California. Three paddlers showed up…would have been 4 but I ended up taking on a 6 month solo paddling expedition across Canada instead that year. Ian Adamson again rasied the bar ever higher, paddling an astounding 424 kilometers down the mighty Yukon River in a year of record high water on the river. Open Ocean World Record: 193 kilometers is the current record as far as I know...I'll be looking into this in more depth shortly! Flatwater World Record: Okay...this one has been getting interesting to say the least! A record was set in S. Africa in 1991 of 220.5 kilometers. Brandon Nelson paddled 235 kilometers on Whatcom Lake outside Bellingham Washington on May 3rd,2006 in setting a new world record! However,Carter Johnson…paddled 242 kilometers on April 29th 2006 (just days earlier)….but here is the thing: When Brandon made his attempt, he was unaware of Carter's new World Record best. What would have happened if he'd known what the new mark was? The old mark had been 220 kilometers....and Brandon SHATTERED that.....could he have done even more if he'd known the new distance record set just a week earlier? In my oppinion, both are amazing paddlers! Brandon is a great friend of mine and has been for quite sometime now. Carter I also know but not well. What I'd love to see next is the two of them going head to head in a major long distance race. Now that would be an epic batter! |
