The Wood County Historical Museum was the sight of this year's winter social for the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. E. This year the event was hosted by the ladies of the 21st Ohio Volunteer Civilian Corp The evening started with guests arriving during the social hour and were greeted by a simply decorated dining area. Each table consisted of a unique centerpiece, evening program, period candy and rosettes. As the social hour ended, the dinner was underway. Each quest enjoyed a delightful potluck dinner and delicious deserts.
The evening entertainment soon started with the drawing of door prizes. The door prizes for the evening were the centerpieces which were all hand made by Charlotte Shanks. The centerpieces were tropiary's which were each made different and each tropiary had a cartridge pack tied on the front.
Once all the names were drawn, we announced the winners of the Silent Auction. At the beginning of January the civilian corp started up a silent auction with several items to bid on. The winners of the auction were: Camp Quilt(made by Kristi Meade), Gift Certificate: Bob Halbiesen Historical Civil War Photo CD: Bob Willer Words of Abraham Lincoln, Collector's Field Guide Book: Scott Lantow Picture: Charlotte Shanks With the silent auction we were able to raise a total of $68.00 in profit for the unit!
Next came the winners of the secret ballots that had been passed out to all the men at the December meeting. The ladies wanted to help the men celebrate the memories that had been created during the past season. The winners of the secret ballot are: "Best Tent Assembler"---Bob Halbisen "Best Fire Starter"---James Shanks "Most memorable campfire participant"---Bob Willer "Biggest Powder Burner"---Jim Fisher "Smallest Powder Burner"---Bob Halbisen "Best Pirate AARGH"---Bob Willer "Right/Left Challenged"---Seth Willer "Best Looking Out of Uniform"---Steve Foraker "Loudest Snorer"---Quinn Meade "Frist to Rise"---Bob Halbisen "Last to Rise"---Quinn Meade
The evening continued with three parlor games: My Ladies Toilet(toilet is spoken in french, meaning wardrobe), Barnyard and 20 Questions. All three games were very entertaining! My Ladies Toilet starts off with one person as the Lady's Maid. Each participant has an item in which a lady would of worn or carried. The maid must guess items and the person with that item stands up and says the item as if they were presenting it. Ex.: "My Lady's Up and wants her hoopskirt". This continues until the maid calls: "My Lady's Up and wants her entire wardrobe! At this point everyone must switch seats and the last person standing is the next "maid". This game quickly became very comical! You just never knew who would be the next person to be pushed out of their seat! There are some very interesting pictures of this game in progress on the photo page! The game "Barnyard" provided the room with the most interesting sounds around! Charlotte Shanks provided the "Barnyard" story and each participant had a specific animal to imitate! As the story began, the animal sounds soon began! It really began to get interesting when Charlotte began to read the story faster! Whenever the word "Barnyard" was mentioned, everyone would make their particular animal sound! We needed a video camera!!! The next game, 20 Questions, was the most competitive of them all! We had chosen 3 different topics: Personalities, Battles and Personal Items. These men and women were ready and we tried to stump them anyway we could! The game ended in a tie!
As the evening came to a close, the guests had huge smiles on their faces! Our goal was accomplished! Everyone had such a great time and one guest stated that this was the best social that he had participated in.
Our season will soon begin and the memories will soon begin! |
