Prison at Danville, Va
The prison at Danville was comprised of several tobacco warehouse buildings located in close proximity. Each prison building was given an identifying number, i.e. Danville # 4. The prisoners spent the Winter of 1863-64 and early Spring at Danville. Some of the 26th OVI died while imprisoned here.
Most of the 26th OVI prisoners were sent from here in May and June, 1864 further south to southwest Georgia and a prison known locally as Camp Sumter, or better known as Andersonville. |
