Warning Signs of Suicide

Four out of five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warnings. Pay attention to these warning signs:

Verbal Warning Signs

  • Direct statements, such as "I wish I were dead," "I don't want to live anymore," or "I want to die."
  • Indirect statements, such as "They'll be sorry when I'm gone," or "I can't take it anymore."

    Behavioral Warning Signs

  • Giving away possessions
  • Frequent accidents
  • Depression
  • Lack of energy
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Changes in sleeping or eating patterns
  • Withdrawal from normal activities
  • Severe drop in school performance
  • Increase in risk-taking activities
  • Personality Changes
  • Previous suicide attempt
  • Obsession with death
  • Poems, essays, and drawings that refer to death
  • Dramatic change in personality or appearance
  • Irrational, bizarre behavior

    Situational Warning Signs

  • Experiencing a loss (death, divorce, ect.)
  • Having difficulties with family
  • Experiencing difficulties in school or at work.
  • Abusing drugs or alcohol
  • Getting into trouble with the law
  • Having no significant other person in their lives
  • Experiencing low self-esteem due to failure
