Owl To Owl

A Resource for New Brownie Leaders

This rather massive document (well, at least on paper. Online it doesn't seem as big!) originally began as a record of some of the fun and successful things we (leaders of the 8th Victoria Brownies) had done from 1998 to 2001, to help the new, incoming leaders in their seemingly-impossible task of leading a Brownie unit. Almost as soon as I started, I realized that this was going to be more than a few pages, and I later decided to make this my Stage 2 “Challenge”. As such, I have put a great deal of effort into making this as comprehensive as possible, and I hope this proves useful.

As I wrote this, I assumed my readers (that makes me sound like a novelist or something) had no previous Guiding knowledge or experience, so I provided as much detail and background information as possible, to help those brand-new leaders in their quest. I apologize if I sounded patronizing at certain times!

If you are a new leader, my foremost recommendation is to attend all the trainings you can. Guiding provides lots of different courses to help new leaders along, and you should definitely take advantage of them! Not only are they incredibly useful, they’re also a great way to meet other Guiders in the area (all of whom have other cool ideas) and they’re just plain FUN!

Obviously, there are many, many more ways of doing things than what I’ve included in this report, and I’m not claiming to be any kind of authority—I’ve only been a Brownie leader for 3 years! But my fellow Owls and I have all been members of Guiding since we were Brownies ourselves, providing us with lots of ideas and experiences, which in turn provided inspiration for many fun activities, which we are now sharing with you, the reader.
