Knights of Columbus

Council No. 10901

February 2002

From the desk of the Grand Knight...........

Congratulations to Brothers Tim Walsh, Noel Wilkin, Carl Lindgren, and John Minor for participating in the second and third degree exemplifications at Clarksdale. That is time well spent. There will be a 2nd/3rd degree here in Oxford on April 6th for the remaining 1st degree Knights. Note that there is also a 4th degree at Vicksburg this month. Contact Bob Hudson if you wish to attend. It is possible that all the members of our council could be 3rd and 4th degree members by April 6th!

Thanks to Joe Tull, Jacob Eftink, Geoffrey Yoste, and Mike Mitchell, our council basketball freethrow championship was completed on January 26th. The participants are eligible for the state basketball freethrow championship in Madison, MS. It will be held in the St. Joseph High School Gymnasium on Saturday, March 2.

The Lenten Fish Frys are scheduled to begin February 15th. The Executive Committee will work that one. Each of the next five Fridays we will provide the same fine service and food to our community.

On 2/22, the Family Committee will handle it. Mark (234 7110) will be counting on Walt, John, Edward, Joe, Miquel, Dennis, Steve, Paul, Bill, Chris, Lynn, Greg, William, and Normand.

On 3/1, Jacob’s (232 8703) Church Committee will handle it. That is Duane, Sandy, Ed, Larry, Mike, Joe, Garner, Tom, Ted, Ken, Gary, Benny, Jeya, Nathan, Jim, and Thomas.

On 3/8, if you are on the Community Committee (George, Larry, John, Stan, James, Scottie, Don, Ted, Joe, Mike, Tim, Jeff, Amzie, Jerry, and Carl), you should contact George (234 1275) for your assignment.

The staff for 3/15 will be the Council Committee chaired by Jeff (513 3297). You are Tony, John, Jim, Troy, Bob, Woody, Tom, Charles, David, Hubert, Ron, Jason, Lance, Tim, and Pascual.

Then Geoffrey (234 3452) and the Youth Committee will do the honors on 3/22. That is Peter, Joe, Maurice, John, Joe, Alex, Pat, Eddie, Jerry, John, John, Noel, John, Fred, and Jacob. There are a lot of Johns in this group. If you get confused, consult the call list on www.oocities.org/oxfordkoc, or call a committee chairman listed above.

Simply put, the Knights will do a lot of work on this project. It will benefit the building fund. There is something YOU can do. Setting tables, cutting, breading, frying, grilling, taking money, serving, cleaning, and moving tables again. Contribute whatever gift you can.

Our next scheduled Corporate Communion will be March 17th at the 9:00 Mass. Wear your name tags, bring your family to sit with the other Knights, and lets worship together.

From Sav-A-Life Ministries

With our nation just enduring the terrorist attacks, and the 29th anniversary of the Roe-vs-Wade decision, I wanted you to take note of an editorial that Jennifer Phillips, the Director of Sav-A-Life Pregnancy Test Center, wrote for the newspaper…

A month has passed since the attack on America. A month of disbelief, which turned into horror, horror that changed to mourning, and mourning which was transformed into a sobered country’s demand for justice. Just like the rest of America, I was shocked as I heard on my way to work that our beloved country had been invaded, and that thousands would probably die. My heart broke as I later listened to the stories of individuals who lost husbands, moms, wives and children.

Our country has asked, "How could individuals inflict such deadly evil and devastation on innocent life?" A valid question, but my heart and mind cannot help but take it a step further and ask, "Why are we all of the sudden concerned with the sanctity of life?" By now, the whole world knows that over 4,000 innocent lives were taken on that fateful day of September 11th. But how many of us know that over 4,000 innocent lives are taken every day through the devastation of abortion? And if we know, how many of us care? For the last several weeks we have rushed to our televisions to get the latest tidbit of breaking news, flown our flags, and cried out against injustice-for all of which I am thankful. But who is crying out against the injustice inflicted upon the unborn?

Each of the 4,000+ people who lost their lives in the attack did not choose their fate. They didn’t have a chance to plead with the terrorists, and they did not have a method of escape. In the same way, children whose lives are ended in the name of choice do not have a voice. They do not have the chance to plead their case or make an argument for why their lives are precious-and worthy of a chance at life. It is somewhat easy to explain to our children why the tragedy in New York happened. We can talk of evil men who did a very bad thing, and should be punished. But how do we explain to our children that our very laws mandate that innocent life can be taken, for any reason at all, and our nation turns its head?

If any of the victims of this tragedy could speak to us from beyond eternity, I have no doubt that he or she, among many things, would say that life is sacred. From the time of conception, we are fashioned in the image of God and have a purpose and priceless worth. As we attempt as a nation to be a united voice for those who were not given the chance to speak on September 11th, will we rise up with the same united voice to speak for those unborn children who cannot speak for themselves? Those who, if they could, would say, "I matter! I have a purpose! Please, give me a chance!"

Let us become a country that truly believes that each life is sacred — unborn and born.
