Knights of Columbus

Council No. 10901

March 2002

From the desk of the Grand Knight...........

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of the fish fry events.

If you haven’t volunteered to work at a Lenten Fish Fry yet, you still have a chance. The two remaining are scheduled for March 15th and 22nd. Don’t miss the fun!

Our next scheduled Corporate Communion will be March 17th at the 9:00 Mass. This is our expression of Unity and Fraternity as we attend Mass and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ and pray together with our families, in a body, as the Knights of Columbus. Wear your nametags, bring your family to sit with the other Knights, and let’s worship together.

Our council will host 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree exemplifications on April 6th at the Oxford-University United Methodist Church. Be sure to forward any completed form 100’s to Bob Hudson or me as soon as you can. If you are a 3rd or 4th degree Knight, come and participate as a witness at the degree work. We also need brothers to help prepare and serve lunch at 11:30.

Only 1% of abortions are performed because of rape or incest; 1% because of fetal abnormalities; 3% because of a mother’s health problems. Please pray that the abortion-minded women of our area will find this ministry to get complete information, and hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Insurance Fact

The K of C Insurance program is a non-profit organization and doesn’t pay dividends to shareholders, but does provide proceeds to allow the Knights of Columbus to…

Contribute, since 1981, over $16.5 million to thousands of seminarians and postulants through the Refund Support Vocations Program, generating $3.2 million in rebates from the Supreme Council to participating councils, assemblies and circles.

Also established the $8.25 million Knights of Columbus Vocations Scholarship Fund, with earnings funding the RSVP rebates and annual $2,500 scholarships based on need to seminarians in theology.

Won’t you consider being a part of this program?

From your Membership Director

The year 2002 is a little more than two months old and our council has lost two, very involved brother knights -- Dick Popernick and Sam DeJohn. Dick, as we know, passed away just before Christmas and Sam, only two weeks ago.

Sam was a very special guy, not only a great knight but a great man, loved by many. Sam became a knight in August of 1994 and from day one, he was involved with his council. He was a Fourth Degree knight who lived the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. He attended every monthly meeting and was at the Rosary, before mass on Sunday, every Sunday and was at every Fish Fry, during Lent. Sam DeJohn truly "became a knight of Columbus." He loved the knights and his brother knights loved him. He will be missed. Vivat Jesus, Sam.

As your Membership Director, for almost ten years, I have had an ongoing focus on the membership of our council. We have been very fortunate over the years and our council membership now has over one hundred members.

Our council will be celebrating it's Tenth Anniversary in June of this year. It's hard to believe that it has been ten years since the Knights of Columbus came to St. John's. We will celebrate that occassion this summer and we will hear more about that later.

Over those ten years our knights have been there whenever they were needed, for our church or our community, but we need membership to keep making things happen at St. John's. The knights in our council, as well as across the state and our nation, have regularly supported their churches and their communities with numerous fund raisers, needed projects and on and on and on. But it takes membership and being involved, to make all those things happen and our council is no exception.

Your individual support and involvement, as a member of our council, plays a critical role in the success or failure of what our council does or can do for our church and our community. Your help in recruiting new members and your personal involvement in is the key to the success of failure of the programs of the Knights of Columbus at St. John's.

Your Membership Committee needs your help, so do your part -- "Ask a man to become a Knight of Columbus".

Vivat Jesus, Bob Hudson

From your hunter-gatherer.....

I have already advised the powers to be that I will cease putting this monthly newsletter together come July and the change of command. If you would like to try your hand at it let Mike Mitchell know.

Brother Sam was one of the names on my call list for a long time. More often than not when I would identify myself, his reply would usually be "What in the hell do you want.?." My wife was in on this joking exchange of dialogue. At Sam’s funeral Mass we fully expected the casket to fly open - for Sam to sit up and say "What in the hell are you all doing here?" If he would have done that I could only have replied, "Because we love you Coach."

The following came from cyberspace recently. While written for a Mother it could have well been written for Sam:

In the Valleys I Grow

Sometimes life seems hard to bear,

Full of sorrow, trouble and woe

It's then I have to remember

That it's in the valleys I grow.

If I always stayed on the mountain top

And never experienced pain,

I would never appreciate God's love

And would be living in vain.

I have so much to learn

And my growth is very slow,

Sometimes I need the mountain tops,

But it's in the valleys I grow.

I do not always understand

Why things happen as they do,

But I am very sure of one thing.

My Lord will see me through.

My little valleys are nothing

When I picture Christ on the cross

He went through the valley of death;

His victory was Satan's loss.

Forgive me Lord, for complaining

When I'm feeling so very low.

Just give me a gentle reminder

That it's in the valleys I grow.

Continue to strengthen me, Lord

And use my life each day

To share your love with others

And help them find their way.

Thank you for valleys, Lord

For this one thing I know

The mountain tops are glorious

But it's in the valleys I grow!

This poem was written by Jane Eggleston who currently lives in Virginia. Her son Jeff states, "She is a wonderful person, loves Jesus and has been the best mother anyone could ever ask for." What a fitting tribute to any mother...(.or to Sam)
