John has done a very nice job of compressing
high res shots,
so that this page and the big pics are relatively
fast to load.
(They range from 221 to 501kb,
but the res is up to 2160 pixels wide,
so it's worth the download if you
are doing the job.)
Also see:
Factory
(.pdf) on installation of estate rear seat
large (1.3Mb), but perhaps well worth it,
with 2 pages of instructions and 6 pages of diagrams...
( I have has some tech difficulties with uploading this...
will be trying again & again `til it's up there...)
Volvo 850 1996
Rear seat installation
I wanted to fit a third row of seats in the Volvo 850 I have, However I didn't want to pay the price Volvo were asking, So I found a wreckers that would supply all the bits I wanted. You shouldn't be afraid of tackling this job as its quite straight forward. Tool required are a torx driver and an electric drill that you can fit the torx driver into, the electric drill is not absolutely necessary but it will stop your arm aching. A set of spanners or sockets, some glue, and some sticky tape. First get the parts Figure 1 A Seatbelt harness Right B Seatbelt center C Seatbelt harness Left D Seatbelt reel covers (should already be fitted on your car) E Luggage tiedowns (should already be fitted on your car) F Spacers (should already be fitted on your car) G Seat/wheel well cover pivot clips (should already be fitted on your car) H I haven't got a clue, please tell me… The rear backrest attached to its cover Figure 2 The bottom seat attached to its cover with the space saver tyre. Figure 3 You may be lucky to get the same interior trim to match your car in which case the installation is much quicker, but ifyou get a different colour or wish to use your interior trim this is what's required. In figure 2 the seats are attached to the cargo area covers, toremove the backrest first raise both the head rests two notches (A and B), then lever the seat away from thebackrest at the four points indicated byC and D, each clip should pop away from the wire on the seat back (the clips are pictured in figure 4). The backrest should be lifted a little from the cover (E) and can the be slide up over the four Hooks at the top of the seat (F) (The Hooks are pictured in Figure 4. Figure 4 You should then see how the headrests and clips etc. are attached (see Figure 5) Figure 5 Its time to take off your cars cargo covers and place them by the sides of the donor cars seats. Standing at the back of your wagon. the front cargo cover lifts up to the vertical and is simply pulled up. The rear cover needs to be unbolted. Raise the rear cover to the vertical - There are two bolts each side near the hinge ends, remove both the left and right side cargo covers and the four bolts should be in plain view. Remove, label them and put away safely. Place the rear backrest next to you donor parts, it should be obvious where all the bits go as Volvo has kindly predrilled the holes, and provided threaded holes where required. To remove the headrests prise up the headrest clips to clear the third notch, this is lipped…. so it may damage the moldings if you just pull them up… Then just unscrew each hook, and clip and put it straight onto your cargo cover, undo the six screws that hold the headrests on and put these onto your cover. Pull off the vinyl at each side of the donor cargo cover and glue it to yours, sticky tape will hold it in place. When all the headrest hooks clips etc. are fitted, replace the headrests by raising the headrest clips and sliding them in, keep them on the second notch so you can fit the refit the backrest, clean the backrest and fit by sliding the top of the backrest over the hooks and lowering it so the wire on the back of the backrest lines up with the clips and thump them on. Go back to your wagon and take out the rear carpet, tools tire and other accumulated debris ( I found 20 plus pencils!!, very odd) The centre seatbelt bar can then be fitted, the top left attachment slides into a hole that's predrilled, the upper right attachment is bolted to the prethreaded hole, the lower attachment is the same. Note You may need to cut a bit from the plastic liner (if you have one) to make it fit around the seat belt anchors. Place all your spacesaver spare and tools back in, the carpet has be pre cut for the seat belt anchors just cut out the shape and fit…. You can now refit the the backrest into the car, get the four bolts you labeled and safely put away earlier refitting is just the reverse of removal. Now onto the seat bottom… Figure 6 Unclip the four clips (A and B), lift a little at point C and push back off the four hooks (D) just like before. Now place your cargo cover next to the donors and transfer all the clips once again, replacing the seat is the reverse of removing it. You should now have two seats attached to your cargo covers, but you still need to do the seatbelts… The seatbelts are attached under the grill by the rear window, lever the interior edge up with a flat tool (A) there are two push type connectors to prise up ( a blunt knife in the middle will do it), when the cover is up the rear is attached by hooks, so pull the grill towards you (B). Undo the two torx screws on the metal plate, and slide it off, pull the trim towards you to enable you to fit the seat belt, the carpet at (D) will have to be pulled to access the bolt hole, the seatbelt has a guide pin to make sure its aligned ok, using a socket do up the bolt, the grill you removed has a slot cut in one side to enable the belt to be threaded onto it, this cover can now be replaced by sliding the back on and pressing the connectors back in. The top anchor point is directly above this is a cover and can be removed with the blunt knife, you should be able to see a guide pin hole and a threaded hole, bolt the top attachment point to this. The lower point is bolted under the floor by the backrests hinge, do the other side and your finished. To use it, first raise the backrest and clip to the back seat by the hook attachment by the right headrest, then flip over the front cargo cover. And its done… Written by John Cook February 2003 |
