November 13, 2001: Happy Aaron Ward Day
Who was there: Magoo, Willi, Becky, Farr A
Becky is in love with Aaron Ward. This explains the reason we went to a game on a Thursday night and after spending the night at Willi’s house, driving back to Central at freakin 6 in the morning! J But it’s always well worth it. On Happy Aaron Ward Day, it was Ward’s turn for a return trip to the Joe. Are we sensing a pattern here? As we were driving down Jefferson, the road leading to the Joe, we heard “Hero.” And not only did we all sing along to it with gusto, we also had synchronized hand movements! We’re the next Backstreet, uh, Boys. God help us. The warmup was almost as good as the game. We had the coolest signs in the world, (you can see most of them on Amy’s page) including a sheet, yes, that’s right, a sheet, for Aaron Ward. We also had the now infamous Kris Draper bobblehead sign. That one was a group brainstorm. Of course, we had the traditional Johnny Wharton sign. What made this warmup so awesome though, was the fact that the Wings players actually would stand there and READ them and laugh. (We were a few rows up from the bench) I believe we got the attention of Ward, Draper, McCarty, Duchesne, Hull, Paul Boyer, Barry Smith, and Wharton. There were probably more, but you can’t take it all in at once. Interesting side note: I bought a Darren McCarty jersey at this game, it was my Christmas present, and while wearing this jersey I was holding the bobblehead sign that kind of mocked him, but it was a funny, good kind of mocking. Someone had to stick up for Drapes after the abuse he took in those commercials! The Wings won the game 4-3, we heard the Irish jig, SERGEI SCORED – the first time Amy has ever seen him score live!! For a while we thought Stevie had scored too, which would have been the first time I’ve seen him get a goal live, but it was later given to Homer. We’ve determined the players all gang up on him at the end of the year and beat him up for taking away so many of their goals. We also met a very interesting usher who kept talking to us during the game. There were a few stars at the game too, who weren’t on the ice…well, for one, Jenni and I almost ran into Anna Kournikova. Amy will probably kick my butt for putting her name in here, but it’s a fact, she was there. And not to worry Amy! She’s keeping her ass out of Detroit now, just like you said she better! Much better then her though; Ted Lindsay was sitting in the lower bowl right in front of us. After the game two of ice took a picture with him, he’s a cool dude. All in all, very cool trip. Probably the funniest I’ve ever had at a game. |
