President’s Report,

Greetings,

The council continues to be quite active between meetings. The resolution Regarding the Federal NDP’s business initiative was taken to and endorsed by the Provincial council meeting held in Windsor. The Federal council delegates then delivered the resolution to Federal council held in St.John, NewBrunswick. This created a healthy and spirited debate with the leader present. In the end a compromise resolution was endorsed. Our resolution will form part of the policy to be debated at the next convention.

We were busy planning for the Harris government’s " Jobs and Prosperity Conference" which was held yesterday at the Holiday Inn. Peter Boyle and Natalie Mehra did an excellent job in organizing our response to the " Fraud and Austerity" photo-op of the Harris government. Our labour council continues to fight back against this horrible government and their offensive policies.

The labour council in conjunction with CUPE council sponsored a bus the Mike Harris Farewell Party held in Ottawa on Saturday October 17th. The crowd of over 5000 continued the tradition of exposing the mean-spirited agenda of the Harris government to the public.

Peter Boyle participated in the training program for the Board of Referees and is now available to sit on the panel representing workers with Employment Insurance appeals.

The Education committee has finalized the weekend school to be held at the Opinicon, Chaffey’s Locks on October 23rd to 25th.

Labour’s Voice in the Community taped two more shows today. The first one Highlighted education programs available to workers across Canada. The guest was Michael MacIsaac, the Education Director of the Canadian Labour Congress. The second show featured Nrinder Ninder Kaur Nann, the CLC’s staff person responsible for youth, and included various programs currently being pursued to involve young people within the labour movement. We are fortunate to have both our guests here tonight to address the delegates of our council.

In closing, please remember to attend the NDP nomination meeting 7pm, on October 29th, the Memorial Hall, City Hall as we select our candidate for the next Provincial election.

As always,
In solidarity,

Charlie Stock
