Abel Tasman was born in the year 1603 in a little village called Lutjegast in the northern part of the Netherlands. He was employed by the V.O.C. and sailed in the waters round India and today's Indonesia.  He became master of the yacht "Mocha" in 1634.
The V.O.C. had a plan to look for the Southland and Abel Tasman was given the command of the expedition.
On the 14th of August 1642 two ships, the yacht "Heemskerck" and the fluyt "Zeehaen" left Batavia in search of the Southland.
Abel Tasman was on board the "Heemskerck". The master of the "Zeehaen" was Gerrit Jansz.
The island of Tasmania was discovered on the 24th of November 1642 and New Zealand on the 13th of December in the same year. The expedition arrived back in Batavia on the 24th of November 1643.
