Review - Darren Coggan “Hometown”

album on ABC through EMI

Listening to Darren Coggan for the first time, you’d be forgiven for thinking he’d be from Walla Walla Washington! But this red-headed 23 year-old hails from Murrumbidgee-side Wagga Wagga NSW, and presents to us 13 songs on his debut album on ABC through EMI.

Under the banner of “Hometown”, many familiar faces and names grace this Aus-country/C&W collection that is as at home in the Deep South as it is here. Darren’s voice belies his youth in stand-out tunes which include Brown Eyed Girl, Silence & Me (Joe Byrne), Say Goodbye Junee and Loosen My Necktie (very Van Morrison).

While it is felt that his talent is being overshadowed by other recent stable-mate signings, Darren Coggan has the ability to make it as big as he hopes. He’s been at it for a while, and there’s many a while to come!
