Ricky Rudd in the #5 Tide Chevrolet looks to the inside of Dale Jarrett in the Citgo Ford Thunderbird early in the Pontiac Excitement 400.  Rudd would have a strong day, leading the most laps and finishing second.  Jarrett, despite starting a respectable 13th, would finish a disappointing 21st.
This would make for a good weekend for "King" Richard Petty.  Petty, winner of thirteen races in his career at Richmond, started 23rd but worked his way through the field to finish a respectable 11th. 
The day belonged to defending Winston Cup Champion Dale Earnhardt.  Earnhardt lead the last seventy-five laps and held off a late charge by Ricky Rudd to win his first race of 1991.  Earnhardt defeated Rudd by one and a half car lengths.
