In 1962 a small garbage fire spread throughout the underground anthracite coal mines below the rugged mountain town of Centralia, Pennsylvania. The land started to subside, cracks form on the surface, and poisonous gases started to emanate from below. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection deemed the area to be unsagfe but the local, true to their Dutchie mentality, refused to vacate their cherished homes. So 42 years later, people are still living in this God forsaken town. Not much remains except for a few scattered homes, a church, two cemetaries, and the local municpal building which houses an ambulance and a fire truck. (Centralia Fire Department... the world's worst fire department! They still cannot put out an underground fire that has lasted over 42 years.) The streets are deserted except for ashen remains of dead maple trees and the wild overgrowth of weeds. Hell, this town doesn't even have it's own funnel cake stand. |
