The Manatawny Creek watershed covers approximately fifty square
miles. It is located in eastern Berks County and western Montgomery County. The
watershed encompasses parts of seventeen municipalities. Earl Township, Berks
County is the only municipality entirely within the Manatawny Creek
watershed. The majority of the Oley Valley is located within the
watershed.
There are 258 historic buildings located within Berks County (Figure 6).
The majority of these historic buildings were originally farm houses or
homesteads. There are also several banks, churches, forges, hotels, mills,
taverns, and school houses. The dates of the historic buildings range from 1729
to 1898. Their architecture range from German Vernacular to
Georgian. There are also eleven historic villages within the watershed
along with the historic buildings in Berks County (Figure 7). The historic villages are Amityville (Amity
Township), Colebrookdale (Douglass Township), Dryville (Rockland Township),
Gablesville (Colebrookdale Township), Greshville (Douglass Township),
Lobachsville (Pike Township), Morysville (Colebrookdale Township), New Jerusalem
(Rockland Township), Pikeville (Pike Township), Shanesville (Earl Township), and
Woodchoppertown (Earl Township).
Attaining the information on the historic buildings in Montgomery Township proved to be a difficult task. The Montgomery County Planning Commission would not allow the records to be removed from their offices. Photocopying the records was also not permitted. Because of the difficulty in attaining the records from Montgomery County and since the thesis focuses on the Oley Valley, which is located in Berks County, the thesis does not contain the data for Montgomery County.
