The National Association of Black Accountants was founded in December, 1969, by nine black accountants who met in New York City to discuss the challenges and limited opportunities they faced in the accounting profession. In that year, there were over 100,000 Certified Public Accountants (CPA's) in the United States. Only 136 of those CPA's were African American. The nine gentlemen, who were known as, Ronald Benjamin, Earl Biggot, Bertram Gibson, Frank Ross, Richard McNamee, Michael Winston, Kenneth Drummond, George Wallace, and Donald Bristow, became determined to "make a difference" and let their voices be heard. The group wanted to establish an organization that would address the concerns of growing number of minorities entering the accounting profession and to make a commitment to professional and accademic excellence. In 1970, NABA chartered its first professional chapter in New York City. Since then it has become a nationwide membership organization. |
