CUB SCOUT PROMOTION / NEW MEMBERS
It is really important to get about 15-25 new boys joining the pack each
year since each year a bunch of kids will leave the pack due to becoming a boy
scout, moving or dropping out. Kids can join at any time during the year but
the biggest signup activity and promotion happens at the beginning of the
new school year.
Preparation
JUNE
-
See if you can get a flyer in the "All in One Day" packets, keep an eye
on the Sequioa newsletter. Contact the SPA president about this or any
contact person mentioned in the Sequoia newsletter. Prepare a flyer for
the envelopes and help out stuffing the envelopes. Here is the flyer
from last year:

-
Have a Den assigned to help with recruiting and the events, preferably
one of the outgoing dens since they know what it is all about and also
they are not busy signing up kids for their Den since younger kids are
the majority of the people interested.

All in One Day
On this day all the signups for the next school year are happening. Last
years (2001 & 2002) we were in the room to talk to kids and parents,
and took names of people that were interested in the Cub Scouts. We had
a poster with pictures of activities and stickers
Bring to this event
Back to School Nights
The last couple of years the Cub Scouts did not have the opportunity to speak but
we were allowed to stand at the entrance and handed out information about the Cub Scouts
and had the poster with pictures as well. Nice to have the date of the School night for New
Scouts and have the flyer to hand out.
-
Have some pictures at the entrance
-
Hand out flyers with information about the School Night for New Scouts or if those are not
done yet the flyers from the All in One Day.
School night for Scouting
This evening is for boys and parents interested in learning more about Cub
Scouting at Sequioa. Goal of the evening is to give information about Cub Scouting to
the parents and have them decide whether they want to join. If so they can sign up at that
evening, pay their dues, and will be placed in a Den.
Promote the evening in the Sequioa Newsletter and through
flyers with the back pack express.
At the evening we need 2 parents from each Den to help out and most of the
Leadership should be there. The evening starts with a short welcome by the Cub Master and
a skit by a Den. Then the kids are kept busy by one half of the parents and maybe some
boy scouts, mainly outside. The parents talk to the other half of the Den parents
to find out what the Dens do, how they are organized and which one they want to join.
Parents/Boys that want to join fill out the form and pay their dues and are assigned
to a Den.
Staff at the night

During the year
It might be good to do another promotion somewhere during the year.
One year the scouts were doing the pinewood derby at the harvest festival
Maybe we can do that again and have an article in the Sequioa newsletter.
We can invite people that have interest to a pack meeting or can have the
boys go to a Den Meeting. What needs to be done for a boy that signs up
during the year, does he still need to pay the fill dues or is it prorated?
