WHAT'S UP WITH ABERCROMBIE & FITCH -- A READER WRITES? Bill: I am extremely encouraged by the heart behind the information shared about Abercrombie and Fitch, and I agree wholeheartidly with your cause. (FYI - according to the newest Teen Research Unlimited study, A&F is now the third most popular brand among teens, under Nike and Sony - that makes it the most popular clothing brand!) Thank you for doing what you are doing, and starting the petition. My question is this: has anything happened recently? How is the survey progressing? What have A&F's newest catalogues been like? I got a lot of valuable information from you web site about A&F, but I did find it a little confusing - it seemed like it was all thrown together and put on the web for others to sort through. I think if you find a better way to organize the information, making it easier to access and go to the heart of what you're saying, you'll be able to have a much greater affect on our society as a whole. You're very appreciated! My prayers are with you! Serving the King, growing the Kingdom, N.D. MY RESPONSE: Abercrombie & Fitch's Christmas Quarterly catalog will be out any day now. Last Christmas A&F chose not to produce a pornographic Christmas quarterly stating that with 9/11 it would have been inappropriate. A&F's Spring Quarterly 2002 was incredibly cleaned up. ADA couldn't endorse it though because "... I want to go on record in saying we still aren't endorsing A&F nor their catalog. The catalog continues to contain several steamy photos (though there are no nude portrayals). But the catalog is vastly altered for the good! ..." http://www.americandecency.org/a&fspring2002.htm But then there was A&F's summer catalog. Quoting myself: "The Abercrombie and Fitch Summer Quarterly is aptly labeled XXX. The first 119 pages are devoted to full-page, color photographs of nude teenagers cavorting at the beach, in the water, in the backyard. The erotically posed photographs are what you would expect to see in a porn magazine, not in a clothing catalog whose market audience are teenagers. In an Entertainment Tonight interview, A&F spokesman Hampton Carney described the catalog as 'beautiful fashion photography' and a 'commentary on college life'. ‘Fashion photography’ with no clothes and a commentary on college life? The last time I visited a college campus I did not see the co-eds naked on the campus green. ..." http://www.americandecency.org/a&fsummer02.htm A&F'S FALL QUARTERLY: " ...Once again A&F pushes the legitimization of recreational, promiscuous sex. The Quarterly does offer 'a guide" to campus conduct' - but a far cry from proper conduct. The message sent in photo after photo and article after article that sex outside of marriage and sex with multiple partners is just part of college life. ..." I fully expect A&F's Christmas Quarterly to be concerning, troubling, problematic, pornographic! And, yes, our website could be better organized. We'll see what we can do. Several things are very clear. (1) Abercrombie & Fitch's catalog is sexually titillating. (2) A&F's catalog is over the edge. (3) If A&F's catalog is found to be a successful marketing tool with little negatives to it (financially) other corporate entities will follow suit. (4) Dos and don'ts alone don't work. Simply telling our youth not to shop at A&F isn't enough in many cases. It's heart understanding that must be built. Building into our children a sense of what is God honoring and what isn't is so essential on this front and many others. This isn't easy and must be a pursuit of the parent for their children devotionally - day after day.
