The long-term healing is often when the parent falls apart. It is sometimes easier to stay composed when there is so much to do as there is during the emergency phase. When that passes, there is more time to feel angry, sad, guilty, overwhelmed, terrified, etc. This is definitely the time for you to find resources for yourself. By this time, you have taken care of the child's needs and he or she may have a counselor of his or her own. Now, you need to get involved in a support group or participate in counseling to help you cope. Remember, your child needs you for the long haul, too. He or she will not fare well if you don't take care of yourself.
