This is the story of what happened in my family. I am 45 years old and just five years ago my brother(one of seven) finally shared with me his story of his sexual abuse throughout his early teens. In researching and in retrospect, I see now that he as well as another one of my brothers were victims of sexual abuse. The older boy, we will call David- probably was abused by a neighbor of ours. Something in me now says that David's friend or friends' father may have abused him. There is no way that a young boy of 9 or 10 would know anything about anal sex if it hadn't happened to him by an older person. He was about the age of 9, 10 or 11. David, eventually raped his younger brother. As I review the full scope of the situation- back in the late 60's early 70's, there were mental health issues with David. David was convicted of exposing himself as a teen. No one ever put any of this unusal interest in sexual activity to an abuse issue. Michael eventually was sexually assualted by not only his brother David, but also by the oldest brothers in the family. Michael is now dealing with serious issues of his own. He is in need of therapy- which he has tried but never stays with. Michael is abusing alcohal, was in trouble with drugs in the past. And exhibits what I see as typical "abused" behavior. Sexual behavior in public that is very inappropriate for anyone. This has destroyed my family, and I, the only sister- cannot even deal with my family now. No one wants to speak or hear the truth. When Michael revealed what had happened and tried to talk to our mother, in when breathe she would say don't go around telling people there was incest in our family, then in another breathe she would say something ignorant like, "men have always been taking it in the butt". There were early signs along the way- we as parents really need to know what to look for. Iam certain that my parents didn't. I also know that there were some mental health issues that were identified early on for my brother David- why are families so ashamed about an illness? If he had had help then maybe all of this other incest would not have happened.
