Subject : Generation Kill
While procrastinating this morning to avoid working on an important project, I came across your review of my book. Thanks. Good review. Then to add to my strenuous procrastination efforts, I skimmed through your blog. Noticed the item on white phosphorous. I saw it used in Iraq, and noted this in my book (can't recall page but it was beginning of chapter on morning when we wake up in Al Hayy and watch A-10s light stuff up.) It appeared at the time that the bombs were being dropped inside the city we were near. Marine LT with me at time was the one who basically said, 'that's weird. we're not supposed to be doing that.'
My thoughts on WP are similar to yours. If I'm on the ground, I want every tool available to kill the guys trying to kill me. Is WP much different than cluster munitions, or worse than being gut shot and a slow death of bleeding out for several hours? (Yet, we do agree on conventions against using chemical weapons.) I don't know the answers, but it appeared to me and Marines I was with we were using WP in urban/civilian areas in '03. And if we signed agreements to not do this, that's bad. If the military is covering up or lying, that's bad as well.
Among my big concerns WRT Iraq is we are losing authority abroad through bungled intel. assessments of WMD, abu ghraib, stuff like WP, and the overall sheer incompetence we display in handling IEDs and other matters.
On the other hand, unpopular as we are, we might accrue new points by sticking with this. If we pursue twin track of sticking to Iraq AND being a bit more humble and inclusive with our allies, maybe eat a little crow for our hubris in bungling early Iraq occupation (with perhaps a public internationally televised execution of Paul Bremmer), we might pull out of this okay, so long as the dollar doesn't collapse due to our debt.
Meanwhile, we should be pursuing every fucking alt fuel technology known to man. Bring in the oil companies, car manufacturers (if there are any domestic ones remaining) and stop treating this as an issue of liberal/vegan/tree-hugger/wind power freaks versus red state/God gave Americans the right to drive gas guzzlers Neanderthals. Politicians on both sides have framed the issue this way since the late 70s. It's led to paralysis. The fact is: energy is a national security issue. We should seek not just independence but to become the source of energy technology that the rest of the world turns to.
