The following was told to me by Julia Ann Whitaker (b. July 25, 1913) on July 22, 1999 (Peggy's Grandmother):

Her father was never called by his middle name of Ramey. He was always called R. When he became a County Judge in 1934 or 1935, when Julia was 21 or 22, he was refered to as Judge Whitaker. He was a Judge in Menifee Co., Ky. for one term.
* * * * * * * * * *

R. never drove. Julia states that her brothers drove but her father never did. When they lived in Frenchburg he would get up in the morning, eat breakfast; usually biscuits, ham, and gravy, would take his cane and walk about two to three miles into town to work.
* * * * * * * * * *

Julia states that her father would dig a hole in the ground and place a layer of hay all along the bottom and sides. He would then put either potatoes or apples in the hole. Then he would place a layer of hay on top and then cover with dirt. When this was done he would place fodder (corn stallks) all around. 833. Anna Margarette Hausman, born in Germany.

Notes for Harmon /Hermann Bach/Back:
Hermann (later Harmon) was christened May 13, 1708 in Fruendenberg.
A group of 53 men, women & children left Freundenberg on March 13, 1738 bound for the American Colonies. Hermann, Anna and their infant daughter, Anna Ella were members of the group later known as the Nassus-Siegen Group. The group booked passage out of Rotterdam on the English vessel, Oliver, as paying passengers, along with about 250 Swiss and German contract immigrants. They sailed from Rotterdam in June 1738 and after several false starts and two long delays in English ports, the Oliver set sail bound from Plymouth, England for Virginia.
The weather was favorable when they left England but they soon encountered severe weather. For 10 weeks they had nothing but trouble. The Oliver was tossed on the angry waves of 13 successive storms. They lost the mast and the captain died of a bloody flux. The mate and about 60 passengers, most of them children, also died and were buried at sea. They reported to a passing ship that they were in great distress for want of provisions.
On January 5, 1739 they sighted land of the Cape of Virginia and anchored in Lynnhaven Bay. Some of the crew and passengers went ashore searching for food; they had been without food for several days. In the meantime, a severe wind came up and destroyed the boat taken ashore and the searchers were stranded. That night one of the ship's two anchors slipped and the Oliver was driven aground. The ship filled with water to the upper decks and many of the passengers were drowned. Others drowned trying to reach shore and many of those who did reach the nearby island died from exposure and severe cold.
Hermann Bach and his wife Anna Margarethe were among the estimated ninety survivors of the tragic voyage and shipwreck of the Oliver. They made their way to the Little Fork of the Rappahannok River in what was Orange Co., Virginia. When authorities recorded Hermann's entry into Virginia, they used the more anglicized name of Harmon Back; he went by that name for the rest of his life.
Harmon had four sons born in Virginia but there is no record of his daughter, Anna Ella, having survived the voyage.
