The Khyber Railway Preservation Society of Pakistan

In the last decade of the 20th century the rulers of Pakistan got carried
away with the dream of building motorways. In the process of making
it a reality they diverted all the development funds towards the construction
of the Lahore-Rawalpindi motorway, thereby depriving the Pakistan
Railways from executing their development plans.
Hailing from a family of steel smelters they ruthlessly started the down-
grading of an extensive rail network. In the first phase the steam locomotives
of SP/S class of Malakwal were cut up and dispatched to the Moghalpura
scrap yard. We paid a visit to the then works manager Mobin to find out
as to why the antiquated locos were a heap of scrap. Being a thorough
gentleman he treated us to a ‘nimbu-pani’ drink. Then he said that
the Govt. needs money and it is their desire that all worthless steel of
Pakistan Railways be scrapped and sold by the tonne. Surprisingly
steam locos are a worthless asset of the PR.
This state of affairs caused so much anxiety that The Pakistan Rail Society,
( founded by Zakir & Tahir in 1967 ) was renamed as The Pakistan
Railway Heritage Society to help preserve the glory of the NWR
and the Khyber Rail System. This was in the year 2001.

Now the society is very much active in their task of consolidating the infra-
-structure of this chapter of the Khyber Railway System. A good news for
the railfans is that the Govt. of Pakistan has promised to extend whatever
support the society needs. All railfans ! Please join hands with the KRPS &
help revive the past glory of the Khyber Railway System.
