THE BIBLE, THE KAMA SUTRA, AND ME
< ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Sex is a process, a way, or more of a ritual that aims for a person to re- unite with its divine origins (God) and have a taste of a state of being called heaven.  It was put to writing by the Hindus in order to emphasize that there is a proper way of achieving it, plus it will serve as a guidance since if they believe that the activity will lead to ‘heaven,’  it must be the ultimate pleasure there existing.  Therefore, we could say that pleasure is not entirely for self- satisfaction, or pleasing the physical body, but also includes the pleasing of the soul.  Both soul and body must be satisfied with it.

After the discussions, I cannot help but to compare the Bible and the Veda, as based on the Kama Sutra, which is a component.  The bible is more of a storybook; it tells of man’s salvation history, of how God loved His people.  It contains songs (Psalms) which the modern Christians use and actions that is converted into rituals after further studying and analyzing of their value.  Meanwhile, the Veda comprises of songs, hymns, rituals, treatises, and reflections directly stated.  It makes the Veda look more of a guidebook to achieve whatever they want to accomplish.  As to the bible, it also has the same purpose: to put its followers on the right track.

Maybe the reason why the process of love- making is not visible in the bible is that they treat intercourse as sacred, as part of the matrimonial bond of couples.  Then, for Christians, sex is a duty.  It is clearly stated and even the last instructions of the Lord based on the Book of Matthew 28: 19- 20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptize them... teach them...”  On the other hand, the Kama Sutra classifies sex as a source of pleasure.  If read, the sutra does not even state the responsibility after having sex.

Yet, we could still see that the Hindus knew of this responsibility since duty is part of their values, which are Artha (wealth), Kama (pleasure), Moksha (salvation), and Dharma (duty).  Now, we could assume that the responsibility should be in Dharma.  This concept connects sex to all the values.  Maybe we could say that the infant is both wealth and duty.  Therefore, the Kama Sutra establishes the cycle of life, and even assures it since the process of acquisition of this kind of wealth (baby) is by pleasure, which even subconsciously, is liked by the doer.

As regards to pleasure, the Bible says, “Do not love the world or the things in the world.” (1 John 2: 15- 17)  The Christians call for love for neighbors, for one another.  It does not tolerate pleasure since it wants more of a communal living.  As to the Kama Sutra, there is certain portion of it that defines public woman (prostitute) and even gay relationships (eunuch).  The sutra does not really encourage its followers to be in such engagement; but more of a support, or allowance.

Then, I realized that Hindus follow strict instructions from this book.  It is actually envying since the Christians strongly believe in freewill.  People may do or omit the practices they are supposed to do.  Unlike the Hindus, it is all visible in their observance of all the days of ritual in their calendar.

Still, although the Kama Sutra seems to arouse the senses, as people who even hear the title begins certain ‘giggling’ reactions, it teaches that sex is not entirely for pleasure or joy.  Maybe this is the one thing that is unlikeable in the Kama Sutra since it seems to support multiple relationships.  Sex is something to be appreciated, like an art, and could not be accomplished in any other way without getting a different result or not achieving the desired outcome.  It is a practice that should be properly handed down, learnt, or acquired.  It is not for fun, like what the modern day is using it.

Seeing text messages in TV chat services, tabloids, movies, and other means of reaching the media containg sex, it is disappointing that they see sex as something that people should be attracted at.  This develops the idea of pornography and erases the sense of art that it should possess.  People, specially teenagers, who engage in sexual activity without proper knowledge of it, does it for the sole purpose of enjoyment which is equivalent to lust, or for merely showing off that you are devirginized.  What they should know is that sex is something that should be founded with love.  As in the real essence of it and not lustful desires or first sight attraction which is only based on physical appearances.  This shows how empty civilized minds could get.

Bottom line: pleasure, in whatever form the doer may like it, should be attained properly.  It should be something not only for oneself but also for salvation.  A person’s right end where another person’s right begins.  If we try to find pleasure via other means or hobbies, then, we could also have this heavenly state by knowing that this benefits at least one being in your surrounding.
