Scenes from the best vacation of my life!

In beautiful South Dakota, I saw my first buffalo up close.

Then it was on to the Crazy Horse Monument...

  and Mt. Rushmore.

On September 19, 1998, I arrived in Duluth, Minnesota for my first visit since I moved in 1965. My first glimpse was a familiar site...

And the memories of my youth came flooding back.

This was the very first house we lived in on the boulevard.

This was another view of the first neighborhood we lived in when we moved to Duluth.

When we lived on the boulevard, we were only a short distance from Enger Tower in Enger Park. I can remember my dad taking me there.

As a child, I used to love to climb the tower and imagine that it was my castle!

The view of Lake Superior from Enger Tower was breathtaking!

Duluth was experiencing unseasonably hot weather while we were there. I only noticed a few trees with leaves beginning to turn.

When I was about four years old, we moved to this house on Melrose Avenue. (Only when we lived there, it was a one-story home). There was a woods down at the end of our street where we used to play as kids.

I went to kindergarten at Holy Rosary Catholic School. I think mine may have been one of the first kindergarten classes they had there.

When I was in the third grade, we moved to a bigger home in a new neighborhood--Tioga Street in Lakeside.

This was probably my favorite house I've ever lived in. I have fond memories of happy Christmases and birthdays there.

I received my first communion at this church, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.

When we lived on Tioga Street, I went to St. Michael's Grade School

and attended St. Michael's Catholic Church
on Pitt Street.

This used to be my playground at St. Michael's. The woods where I used to play is still there!

This was the view to my back yard from our driveway. I just loved all the trees we had. We even had raspberry bushes in our back yard on the other side of our garage. All the neighborhood kids used to like to play in our sandbox back there!

Tioga Street was one of those storybook tree-lined streets. At the end of the street, within walking distance, was the Lester Park Branch Library, where I nurtured my love of books and reading.

Not far from the library was Lester Park. I used to go there to hike and find a place all my own where I could listen to the water and the wind and dream of all the things that lie ahead of me in my future!

In 1965, we moved to Peoria, Illinois. This was the house we lived in there on Castle Court. We took a little side trip to visit the old neighborhood in Peoria, too.

I hope you enjoyed seeing a tiny slice of my life. My trip back to Duluth was more than I ever dreamed! One more thing...my favorite pizza in the whole world comes from Sammy's Pizza in Duluth. For 30 years, I've dreamed about sinking my teeth into a sausage pizza from Sammy's. While we were there, we ate at Sammy's (twice!!!) and you know what? It was as good as I remembered it!!!
