Welcome to the Parents Autism Network of Nebraska (PANN)

The purpose of this site is to provide resources and a forum for discussion and communication for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders which include:

-Autism
-Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS),
-Asperger's Syndrome (AS)
-Rett's Syndrome
-Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD)

As parents of a child with autism, we have received the most helpful information not from doctors and educators (regardless of their good intentions and honest desire to help) but from other parents of children with autism.

One of the most helpful realizations was finding out that there were other parents with similar concerns and experiences.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

The number of children being diagnosed with autism in this country is staggering. In many areas the incidence is 1 in 500 children. In some states, it is as high as 1 in 150.

Whether the increase is due to actual rising numbers of cases, or more consistent and accurate diagnoses, the fact is that we have a growing population of children with some very specific needs that are not only going unmet, but which are also largely misunderstood.

As the numbers rise, and less and less is done, the future for the children and their families is frightening.

Some states are making an effort to deal with the situation, but many more are doing very little. Here in Nebraska awareness and communication are poor, and information is very hard to come by.

Nationally, some of the biggest stumbling blocks are ignorance, silence, and misinformation.

It is our hope that this site becomes a place where parents of children with autism can come to keep up to date on the latest research, get support, and share ideas, information, & insight.
